i dont relate this song to a relationship, rather i relate it to self improvement and the constant battle between your past self, current self and future self. and how hard it is for your current self to leave your past self and create your future self. the part "because you desire what you want but you don't know how to get them now" emphasizes how you want to become a better person but you don't know how to start and the lyrics "this happened at the start , every time we try we fall apart" expresses the constant challenge of taking action to change from your past self and create your future self as well as the multiple attempts of doing so which often end up in failure. the lyrics "You can't seem to hold my heart" expresses a battle between your past and current self and the inevitable want and need to change your current self to not repeat the mistakes of your past self and fall into a pile of regret. the lyrics "close to you" further emphasize how you feel temptation to run back to your past self for a sense of security and comfort yet if you go back to your past self you may just go back to your old ways and do the very things you hated and regretted. the lyrics "and i know that you make it clear that you want me out of here , though it's loneliness you fear" expresses how you want to leave your past self for the bettering of your current self but if you do that you may just fear the loss of your past defense and coping mechanisms of which made you feel less lonely as well as made you feel comforted. I have over come my past self but this song often reminds me of the struggle i experienced trying to get out of severe depression without any therapy or other forms of help because it made me feel vulnerable and weak.
