Bahamas #2: Q&A Session

  • *Disclaimer: This is just a Q&A video from common questions posted to our past videos. We are doing this as we cruise on our first leg to the Bahamas.
To clarify my comments about Baron's vs 310's: I was only comparing IO-470 powered versions of both aircraft. There are several versions of each. To reiterate, they are very comparable aircraft and it's really just personal preference.
My headset is actually the LightSpeed Zulu 2's (I mistakenly said 3 in the video).

I grew up with a dad who had a couple of 310s, then moved up to a 340 and then a 421. I flew in them all the time. It’s part of the reason I got my pilots’s license and have flown all my life. Really enjoy your channel! Loved the biography and Q&A of this episode. My Dad was a CFI for Cessna back in the sixties and got me a factory promo photo of Sky King with his new 310B, so obviously I've been a lifelong fan of 310's. Going along with your tale of renting a Skyhawk and it taking forever to travel; again as a kid back in the sixties I got to fly with my Dad in a Skyhawk . Another pilot friend who owned a 310B took off a little later, caught up and passed us like we were standing still! Keep up the great work!

And now I know, the rest of the story. Seriously, thank you for the background info. As a USAF SMSgt (Ret), I feel a kinship with you beyond flying. On the comparison between the 310 and Baron, my research seems to indicate a better resale value for the 310; and, without having been in either, it seems like the 310 cabin space is greater. At any rate, thank you for taking the time to post your videos. They have been helpful to me as a pilot, making me much more comfortable flying VFR utilizing ATC. I now always use ATC flight following when fling cross country since viewing your videos. Since most of my flying is between KBMI and Milwaukee, maybe we’ve spoken. Happy landings, and again, thank you for improving the VFR/ATC relationship.

I really enjoyed this talk, thanks for sharing. I watch all your videos, Me and several of my family members are studying to possibly get training to be a pilot. My brother owns a 172. Two of my brothers are A&P so I've been closely involved with aviation thru them for years. You, Stevo, Greg, Baron are some of my favorite channels in the GA world. Very informative video, Kevin and Jaime. Thanks for sharing your history in aviation with us. Since y’all aren’t commercial pilots, you both are very down-to-earth folks. I think that’s what makes you both so likable to us. But, when you are flying, Kevin, you are conversational, but are still serious about flying the aircraft, and Jaime handles the radio like she was the pilot in command. It brings out the friendliness in each of you. You both talked about you each got into aviation and and air traffic control, but one thing you left out, or I didn’t catch. Since you both came from different parts of the country, and have worked in different locations in ATC, how did you end up in Chicago ATC? Do you both work at O’Hare? Also, Kevin, as a fellow veteran, I want to thank you for your service to our country, as well as, your father and grandfather, for their service. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of different aircraft, as well. Very informative. I, personally, feel like I know you and Jaime a little more now, and appreciate you both. Thanks for another great video. As always, keep’em coming, and Happy Flying and always Safe Landings.

Thanks for your service as well Richard and glad you enjoyed the video! We both ended up in Chicago because it was the busiest ATC facilities and we wanted to work at the top. Little did we know it is really hard to get out when you are here because it is short staffed. One day we will have a summer spot in Alaska and a winter spot in Georgia. Can't wait!

Kevin/Jaime, I enjoy coming along for the ride w/ you in your videos; you are nice people to hang out with. The first airplane I ever rode in was a Ford Tri-Motor, aka "The Tin Goose". It was operated out of Port Clinton, Ohio by Island Airways and flew out to the Lake Erie Islands. As I recall the cabin was narrow and cramped, but fortunately it is a short flight!

Wow, I can’t believe the similar background I have with you. My dad, Army fixed wing pilot when I was young, lived in Athens, also Atlanta where dad kept our C172 at Peachtree Dekalb (north side of Atlanta ). Numerous uncles who were also military and GA pilots. C310 hands down favorite. The back stories you and Jamie share are some of the best I’ve ever heard. You probably won’t believe this but my wife also lived in Alaska. No, you didn’t talk too much, could have listened all day ! Thank you Kevin !

Jaime and Kevin, thanks so much for sharing your story. Jamie, I am legally blind, 20/1700 in best eye, and my wife is a pilot. I do the radio work as well. However, I have logged about 65 hours of left seat and right seat time to learn how to land the plane in an emergency without being able to see the runway, airport, or most of the gauges from the right seat. My instructors were very helpful in developing ways that I could control the plane safely with the visual cues that we found that worked for me. I have learned to fly an ILS and NDB approach and am able to land the plane safely if an observer can assist me over the radio in knowing when to flare. In a non field emergency landing, I have learned to get the plane as slow as possible and head for a big open field.

Just found your channel. Really enjoy it. I had a 310-J (N3051L) for 10 years that I bought in Alaska and flew back to VA. Flew it for 600+ hours and really miss it but I had to sell it, I was afraid avgas would go to $2/gal. It was a long time ago. Met my wife at the airport and our first date was in the 310. Watching the takeoffs and operation brings back a lot of good memories. As far as the shoulder harness' go, my wife has a PA-28 that we installed the BAS shoulder harness and didn't like the four point harness. They really chafe our neck and are hard to put together. We installed the conventional shoulder harness (3 point) in our Velocity XL-RG and like those a lot better. Thanks for the sharing your stories. Maybe will meet at Oshkosh or Sun-N-Fun someday.

Neck chafing sounds terrible. If I was going to build a plane today it would be the Twin Velocity...they look and sound amazing. Even though they don't seem as fast as your's! We plan to go to both next year so hopefully we can meet up! Thanks again!!

Some of my favorite memories were spent in the right seat of a 310 an old friend and client owned here in Jacksonville, Florida back in the '80's. He was working on his IFR ticket and every evening would shoot approaches to JAX and I would ride along. I have been a VFR flier and Warrior owner at one time, so I also live some vicarious memories through you guys. Great videos! Keep it up! For the record, when my friend was working on his approaches, his CFI occupied the right seat and I usually rolled around on the bench back seat. My up front time and hands on was just when we were zooming around for fun - and yes, after flying a Warrior the speed was very very addictive. I would have a 310 in a country heartbeat if I had the income to support it.
