Electric planet jr cultivator: First trial run

  • These old planet Jr brand 2 wheeled cultivators are great, except for one thing: The gas engine.
I acquired this one without an engine with the intention of powering it with a DC motor, speed controller and one of my lithium power brick batteries.
This is a first video after spending just a couple hours getting the motor and drivetrain roughed in. Belt pulley ratios are not correct (top speed would be a bit too low) but it's a nice proof of concept that demonstrates just how quiet this low speed PMDC motor is.
The motor comes from a battery-powered floor scrubber and uses an unusual brush arrangement and armature winding pattern causing the motor to spin very slowly. This is a good and simple fit for the Planet Jr. drivetrain which was designed to be driven by a small single-cylinder gas engine equipped with a 6:1 planetary gear reduction on the output.
    More to come.

Wonderful! You probably have the skills to take a battery and electric motor and a wheel and put it together and make a powered wheel, hoe, correct?

Yes I guess so. There was a company making powered wheel hoes a few years ago, Carts and Tools, but they don't seem to be in operation anymore.
If you're considering such a project there are some good geared hub motors that are designed to be fitted with an 8" tire directly on the hub motor. Check the link below for one good example.
