You can literally find at least one mortar in most malay people house in Malaysia (not sure about the chinese and Indian)😂
Usually the malay mums always stick to the traditional way using mortar and later even the daughter got used to it 😂😅 and I think this will be passed on more in the next generations cuz if I have kids one day, me also will definitely teach them to use mortar ;)
P/s: it is not only for sambal.. we also use it for other dishes too instead blend it
Sometimes we also use it to break the ice block if it is to big
chinese and indian house also got mortar, i can still find my moms mortar in the kitchen
yess , my mum said it's bcs when we use traditional way, the food will be more delicious than using the modern technology. altho i dont eat sambal but my mum always ask me to make sambal
I'm also as a malay guy uses mortar to make nasi goreng rather than using the ready made paste. Using raw ingredients are much richer in flavor than using instant paste.

Malaysian actually eat more than that for sahur😂 we eats a full meal like what we eat for lunch but some people do prefer eating light foods too and some will only eat dates and drinks mineral water

i usually eat a lot during sahur, but eat less during iftar because when iftar, i craving drinks more than food, thus easily get full by drinking only😉

My aunt used to make sambal while holding a clear glass dish in front of her face. It's to protect the eyes in case some bits fly out. Anybody who wants to make sambal the traditional way, I really recommend this or goggles. You don't want to go blind XD
My tip when making sambal using a mortar
*wear sunglasses* because it can protect your eyes .

Usually during sahur, i really doesn't have the appetite to eat something heavy. As for me, i will eat nestum and dates. Sometimes I'll drink milo instead of nestum and dates (bcs sometimes i am too lazy to sahur but i must consume smtg cause i have gastric) hehe btw, good job blimey 😍
Me too.. if i'm at home alone or in university.. i prefer to drink milk during sahur.. because i'm not an effort person to cook at 4 o clock in the morning 😂

Making sambal IS hard. But in Malaysia we use stone mortar so it's easier to crush the ingredients. And we also cooked the crushed ingredients until a condition called 'pecah minyak'. At that condition, it indicates the sambal has been cooked to perfection.

I'm malaysian, not Malay but very enjoy malay food especially rendang and anything cooked with sambal. i tried to make sambal from scratch before to make sambal fish because self-made always smelled nicer, but failed. Xd need to practice more. anyway, blender is a must XD
