18yr Old Buys Dad His Dream Car: 1966 Thunderbird

  • My father is my number one inspiration. He has taught me everything I know to this day. From him and I working on cars to landscaping, I don't recall a single time I felt "pressured" to learn from him. His radiating knowledge has shaped me into the young man I am today. Words cannot describe how grateful I am and I only know of one way I will be able to "slightly" repay him for everything he has done.
Roughly 20 years ago, my father had his 1966 Ford Thunderbird Hardtop painted Wimbledon White with a 390cu V8 motor and Black interior that was his precious gem. A few years later he was forced to sell it because of economical hardships the family was going through. To this day, he constantly talks about his love for that car and how he regrets selling it (and always telling people that are debating to sell their cars that they will regret it down the road). When I was about 5 years old, I promised my dad that one day I would buy his car back for him. I perfectly remember the smirk he gave me thinking I'm only a little boy. But, little does he know that to this day I still plan on buying his car and surprising him. I cannot wait for the day I am able to surprise him and catch his reaction on camera, because I know it will be absolutely priceless and breath taking.
My father means the world to me; he has always been there to help me or anyone else in need. Through the years of working on cars with him, I have learned so much that I am able to apply those skills and I am not afraid to stop and ask someone who is having car trouble if they need a jumpstart or maybe a hand replacing a belt on the side of the road. Without my father, I wouldn't be able to help those people and I wouldn't be driven like I am to pursue my education and become a Mechanical Engineer.

My '66 T-Bird had diamond blue exterior with a dark greenish blue interior. That was one of the many classics I wish I'd kept. I have had Chargers, Furys, Cadillacs, Satellites, Darts, and I now drive a '68 Ford Mustang with same interior / exterior color combo as my '66 T-Bird. Lucky man, you have a great son and family. Enjoy that car and each other. A good life is a life well spent together. Bless you all.

Growing up in Queens my neighbor brought a T Bird every two years...The '66 was my favorite. When I got stationed down in N.C. a guy I was visiting had one sitting on his Mothers lawn. Green, got it for $200.00 towed it back to Ft. Bragg and spent my paychecks working on it. People Hit the lotto and by $100,000.00 cars. I hit the lotto I'm buying a 1966 T-Bird restored.

This car is a '66 Thunderbird Town Landau, as I'm sure you know. 1966 was the last year for a TB convertible, to be replaced in '67 with the Continental wannabe suicide door sedan that sold badly. Throughout the 70s the TB became a bloated Continental Mark twin sister. Never could figure that out

The T-Birds were always just something extra cool for on styling and his was loaded with everything electrical long before that was standard. Good on ya for getting your old man his ride back!!

This is too cool. I’ve been enamored by Thunderbirds ever since I got to sit in a 1960 one some 7 years ago. Now four years post high school I’ve finally been able to buy one,and while it may not be a ‘57, I did manage to pick up a triple red 2003 model with low mileage that I’ve practically pampered since getting it in February. Taking her out on a good sized road trip in a few days.

A beautiful car and a wonderful gesture. To give back to your father a little of what he gave to you. My Dream car “The Grey Ghost” was the 1966 Pontiac GTO. We went down town Sacramento. My Mom and Dad loved Sam Hof Brau 17th & J st. So we went down to have a late Dinner. It just happened to be up the street from Mike Salta Pontiac. 1966 was the first year that the GTO was it’s own designated line (not just a performance package) added to the Tempest or LeMans. We actually set down with the Sales Manager and made out a “Build Sheet” No power window, air conditioning or power steer it was a race car. Anyway, what a nice thing to do for your Dad.

Yea my dad (step dad who didn't even have to give 2 shits about me and my sister) first gave up is his 1970 torino when I was around 8 because he had lost his over the road trucking job and became a local driver and my mom fell ill and had to stop working so we were dirt floor poor and it was the 1 thing he had that he knew would get us food, lights and heat at the time. Then a few years later after we had recouped financially he bought a 1971 boss 351 to restore on his days off or when he got home from work, my sisters and I helped him pull the entire interior out he taught us about alot of mechanical things, we helped him pull the motor, he showed us everything first hand and we cherished that time with dad, again my mom fell ill and medical bills piled, dad stopped working on it, money got too tight and he sold it. My dad is not an emotional person but the look on his face each time was enough sadness to fill a daughters heart with tears for a million lifetimes :/

Lots of people have it much worse than we could have had it. My dream is to someday get my old man the car he wants, and either restore it together or get one already restored. And no problem :-) any time I get to talk about my dad I'm happy :-D

Nice to see that it is not a "perfect" car and has some war wounds ... the best you could afford, as a dad I would love a classic like that more than a brand new car.

+Barry R. Brown yes I spent everything i had to get the car for him. And having the few things that are not perfect is great because it guarantees that we can work on it together and make the car perfect to us. He was very happy when I gave it to him.

When a parent sacrifices all their wants and dreams so they can raise a child/family they deserve to be shown how much those sacrifices mean to the child/family and I truly hope I can pay back in some way all the amazing things my parents did for me my whole life!.. So kudos to you for showing that love and appreciation to your father. May you both make many memories in that car and I pray he's with you for many years to come!. 🙏🙏

But many marry a domineering spouse where their wishes over ride the others, my daughter in law has complete control over our son, he barley ever comes to see us much less ever waste a nickle on dad or mom, he's about her people and himself, and yes we raised him right, but he married wrong. Be careful who you marry because it affects everyone.

My mother sacrificed her career for me and my brother. Neither of us ever were in trouble, everyone always told my mum we were the perfect kids and she was so proud. As an adult I could see how loving she was with babies in tbe family. She just lit up. I really didnt want any kids and neither did my brother. I was told I couldnt have any due to a medical condition anyway which didnt bother me. That changed when I found out I was pregnant. My mother was sooo happy. I was I'll throughout the pregnancy. Really didnt handle it well and had to go on early maternity leave due to being Ill all tbe time. I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. I have never seen my mother look so happy. She had a new life. She offered to look after him while I was at work. She joined lots of baby groups. Took my son to various family members. She died when my son was 5 years old but she told me before she died that he was the best thing she could have had from me before passing. You see, even an unplanned surprise can make a parent VERY happy. She said nothing matters except my son. He was perfect.

My dad was 72 when he died and still working. He never asked for anything. Everything went on me and my brother. I am a single parent now. Everything I earn goes on my son. He wants for nothing. I hope I pass this into him and he does the same for his kids one day.
