I don't like the Greatest Showman. People think it's soooooooooo good but it's not my thing. I don't like it.
Update: I have semi-changed my opinion. I dislike the plot and characters still completely, but I like some songs. I like “A Million Dreams” and I kind of dig “Other Side”. That’s about it, and that’s all the ways in which my opinion has changed.
PS: it’s possible my opinion could change again. I didn’t like Be More Chill at first, but know I love it, so it could happen, but I doubt it.

I have a love/hate relationship with The Greatest Showman. It's kind of a guilty pleasure, but it also isn't very good. Pretty much all but one or two songs can stand on their own outside the musical, which isn't a bad thing necessarily, but it's like a jukebox musical where they couldn't get the rights to existing songs so they wrote their own pop songs to go with it and are just there because...its a musical so there needs to be a musical number here? The song I really can't stand is Never Enough, it's so annoying. And I can suspend my disbelief because it's a musical but it can only go so far. No amount of suspension of disbelief will make me believe that Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams are the same age. And yet, despite my complaints I saw it twice in theatres and listen to the soundtrack at work sometimes.

I LOVE Hadestown. Got to see it when it was playing in my hometown back in November. I'm a little obsessed and now my new dream role is Persephone. The concept album from 2011 is on CZcams (last I checked) and it's also amazing and has songs that I adore that were cut from the live cast recording (Like the Wedding Song and Nothing Changes) but it doesn't have Chant on it, which is my favourite song (I am a sucker for those musical moments when all the characters are on stage in one big number, One Day More from Les Miz comes to mind.). I hope the show gains enough popularity for them to release a special edition from the Live Show with all the songs that were cut, or create a new studio cast recording (so long as Amber Grey and Patrick Page are still part of it).

I had season tickets, and I figured I might as well go see it when it toured through here on its North American tour, and it completely changed my mind. If we're going into movie musicals, I'd have to say that The Greatest Showman is kinda horrible. Like, the story is kinda decent but I was more interested in the subplot with the Zac Efron and Zendaya characters than anything Hugh Jackman was doing and don't get me started on the music! I liked _parts_ of some songs from the movie but good God does they love to shove the idea of it being modern music in your face. It's like it's trying to pull a Hamilton but it's casually forgetting that Hamilton was a stage play and the clash between the past setting and the modern music wasn't so jarring because the set didn't completely reflect a past atmosphere (plus, Hamilton's music is actually good). Here, the filmmakers are trying to capture an old aesthetic while fitting in modern pop music with it and it doesn't work because the film _looks_ like it's set in the 1890s!
I think the worst example of this was when Jenny Lind (the only character who I can remember the name of) sings a diagetic song that everyone else in the movie is listening to...and it's a _pop ballad!_ Like, it's stated that she's an opera singer earlier but then she sings what is clearly not an opera song! Nevermind that this is some of the weakest music I've heard from Pasek and Paul (they went from Dear Evan Hansen to _this_ people and that's coming from someone who's not the biggest fan of Dear Evan Hansen), what the actual hell is this?! And, I'm going to be honest with you now, I don't think I liked one full song in this movie. Like, I liked the beginning of 'This Is The Greatest Show', anything that wasn't the chorus of 'The Other Side' and some of 'Tightrope' but then I either forgot the rest of the soundtrack or I really hated it (Rewrite the Stars is such a boring song and This is Me sounds like it's trying to be You Will Be Found...and failing despite it being written by the same people. What the actual fuck?)
Do you know what's such a shame though? The camera work and the choreography in the movie is such a beauty to watch and it's absolutely amazing! Rewrite the Stars is a bad song but the movie presents it beautifully and it's amazingly shot and choreographed, it's a pleasure to watch. So is pretty much every other song in this movie with the exception of the start of A Million Dreams which just makes it so much worse that the music is such generic pop

I think that the point of the Phantom's costume in the movie is that it juxtaposes the other character's costumes in the scene, because in a film is harder to make events stand out than in a stage show, because they don't have to benefits of the lighting and such, so by putting him in a costume that is so different to everyone else's in the scene, it makes it stand out. Each to their own though ❤

I've literally never seen a bad production of it. It's so beautiful and moving every single time. I got the chance to be in Titanic a couple years ago. And it was one of the greatest experiences in theater that I've ever had. I can understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's a very emotional show. And you have to really care about history and get in with the emotions of what it has been like to really understand it. But it is one of the greatest treasures musical theater has ever given. And I am so beyond thankful to have found it.

Also,I don't know if you have already, but you should check out Jekyll and Hyde, the musical (the original one) with Anthony Warlow playing Jekyll/Hyde. There's a playlist on youtube of the cast recording, but it was never done on stage. This is one of the only ones that actually keeps to the story the book, and I recommend it if you have never heard of it. You would probably like it Amy, buy I'm not too sure. It's kinda repetitive(like the same tunes with different lines) but it's quite captivating at points. There was a production of Titanic in Dallas, Texas that became so iconic that the direction and set were replicated ten years later. It wasn't anything fancy like the Broadway version with its giant hydraulic ship, it was just platforms. But the cast was incredible and they really made everything shine. In my opinion, this cast was even better than the recording, which says something because Michael Cerveris and Brian d'Arcy James are something to beat. It was a simple concert version, but you felt it, and you realized that it's not a musical about an international tragedy as much as it's about the people that were on it and their lives. Every character in that show was actually on the ship.

    9. Mamma Mia
    10. Wonderland. I mistook this for Finding Neverland which is actually beautifully written music wise. This however sounds like someone really wanted an extremely pop sounding musical but forgot that it needs to actually sound good.

    • @wizzy615

      For me its:
      1. West Side Story. Tony is an improvement to Romeo, but Maria and a lot of the other music annoys the piss out of me. Also I'm not a love at first sight fan. I think characters can feel sudden attraction, but they need something to back it up. Without it, I don't relate to their love or feel much for the characters. Anita was the only character I felt for
      2. Sound of music. Act 1 is lovely, but act 2 is boring
      3. Fiddler on the roof. Again, act 1 is great, but act 2 doesn't do much for me
      4. Peter pan. I love the lullabys, but the other music is nothing to write home about and there isn't much story to get invested in
      5. Hairspray. Decent story, the aesthetics are garish and not pleasant to look at, and the music is mostly forgettable
      6. Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dream coat. I've seen the film and I've seen it live. The child chorus works in the film, but live they only clutter the stage. Also unpleasant aesthetics, super cringe, and has tone issues. Why are Jacob's wives doing the can can when they hear Joseph is dead?

I've been in both Godspell (Judas Iscariot) and Titanic (ensemble). Both shows are more fun to be in than they seem, especially when you get into the history of Titanic to learn about the characters. It needs to be a good production though...(the production of Titanic I was in is online. It's one of the more viewed productions.)
As for Godspell, it's kind of a show that, like the characters in the show, the actors do really create a little family. It is super weird, but I just view it as a bunch of friends telling stories to learn how to be good people.

    I.
    ABSOLUTELY.
    HATED.
    IT.
I got lost in the plot of it, when the characters went into the fountain, ran for the man (I found out it was John the Baptist when I friend told me.) No one could find the plot.
All of our class went on our phones, are jolly ranchers, and ignored the movie. When the tv suddenly turned off, everyone cheered since they thought it was over. Everyone thought (including me at the time) the move was about drunk hippies wandering over the city

    Musicals I hate (don't @ me)
    - The fantasticks (literally everything about this show I hate how did it run for so long)
    - Last Five Years (love the music but it's just so frickin awkward on stage)
    - cats (shall I even say anymore?)
    - Annie (oh my lord this show is absolutely terrible although I think miss hannigan would be fun to play)
    - any Disney princess show (they always translate awful on stage for some reason)

You said "Phantom of the Opera" and I was like *GASSSP* and then "THE MOVIE" and I was able to breath normally again. :D

I have a show review that you should do! You may have heard of it, there's a show called "the comedy about a bank robbery" and it's absolutely great! It isn't a musical but it has some great singing parts - it's more of a play with songs. It's on in London at the criterion theatre. I really recommend it!

So on board until A Little Night, that is my stuff (I prefer the 2009 to the original Broadway)! Love you Amy!
