Crazy timing with this video. I had an acquaintance asked me to shoot almost 2 hours of footage for him and when I quoted him a price he balked at it. Then, a day and half later he text me and asked if you could start shooting.
I think reality set in and he realized I was giving him a VERY fair price.
    Thanks for the video. 👍🏾

One of the questions I always ask after getting info on the scope of the job is, "what is your budget target?" This rarely gets a dirty or puzzled look from big clients because they understand that one of their goals is to have me save them time and money. I'm known for being hard nosed, but I always try to come in ahead of time and under budget. It gets you repeat business. I also invoice a per diem in which if I have to spend 3 days travel in and out, I charge 1/2 per diem to cover my travel time.

Great video but you forgot one thing... reshoots. I was hired for company headshots and an executive portrait of the company's CEO. Everything was great except the CEO did not like how he looked with his beard and wanted me to come back and reshoot his portrait after he shaved but didn't want to pay for it, saying he wasn't satisfied with his portrait and that somehow was my fault. I wound up reshooting for free to keep the client happy but wished I had included something about reshoots in my estimate.

Pure Gold, Daniel. This enlightenment to many (I have my own structure for "average" jobs, but large jobs that can take additional staff, catering, transportation, etc., no clue!! (Until now!!). Thanks so, so much. Sharing this with my colleagues.

was asked by a friend who worked for Double Tree (Hilton) hotels. she asked for a quote on 7 business headshots for staff that needed updating. they were going to be used primarily internally for emails, messaging etc.
i quoted half day rate of $300 for as many people she wanted to send my way. that was shooting, editing, digital delivery.
never heard anything back. she has since moved on to another company and when i bumped into her, i asked what was wrong with my bid. "we normally would just work stuff like that in trade."
uh, i live literally less than 3 miles from the hotel. why would i want to trade my labor (and id like to think knowledge, experience, know-how) to stay in a hotel i could walk to?
i guess im just dumb for trying to get into a business like photography because if i had to depend on it providing even as little as 10% of my living expenses, id end up the street. well not quite but it feels like it

Thank you Daniel. I just subbed and will check your other videos. You made excellent points that will be helpful in bidding for projects. I know prices vary from region to region but I was hoping to see or hear specific numbers. I remember attending a seminar with a commercial photographer from San Fran back in late 90's. At the time he said his daily rate was $2,500 and it covered his costs. His said his profits came from selling of the rights for various uses. This was Hassy film days.
I would like to hear more about pricing for usage and rights in digital era. Things have changed a lot over the past 25-30 years but what is the current climate and the norms?

Thanks Daniel. Super informative. Everyone will share the specs on a lens or a camera, very few share the "business" of the craft. You want to get good value for your work at the same time you don't want to look or sound like a "knob"...Is that still a derogatory term? Looking for to phase two. Prepping for the shoot, and the shoot itself. Again thank you.

My first major client didn’t pay the deposit (they’re international and I knew they were good for it). They neglected to mention that they pay 90 days net, even though I had 14 days, being very small.
I’m sure they’ll never use me again because I pestered them for payment a few times before they laid out their payment terms.
It was nail biting for that time, because I had expenses that left me out of pocket for three months!

This was superb! Question: An estimate is not an invoice or a contract between you and the client. When and how do these interact after they have agreed to the estimate? Thank you.🙏🏼

Hi Daniel, I was curious how would you approach getting into a market or if you have suggestions that grew your brand especially that is still helping you today. Do you have a sample of the additional form when it goes beyond 10%.

What about pricing in the post-production/retouching?

  • @joseph1172

This is way over my range of work. I just wanted help in pricing some engagement shootv at a location or since family photos in studio or at location. This are small jobs that pplb only want a few photos. I like the video but this way to big for what I'm getting.... my jobs are little and not huge production
