    AT 2019 here, I started in February and you'll appreciate the warm layers. I also carried an umbrella and absolutely loved it, it will keep you slightly drier, but it's more valuable for keeping your sanity in the pouring rain, I would find a way to attach it to your pack to free up your hands. You'll figure out what works/doesn't work quickly on trail, so I wouldn't worry about anything you're unsure about bringing.

    Hello Dale, great video, thank you! I am planning on heading out this year as well over the summer. A quuck note on your battery bank as I am currently researching mine; you might not be able to take advantage of the 65w fast charge as the Anker only takes in 18 watts. It might be worth testing to save a few ounces. I have been testing a couple small 40w 2 port Spigen chargers vs. one larger 4 port Anker, the only device I have that can fast charge is my phone. On that note, I will probably be taking 2 nitecore 10k powerbanks vs one larger, both for faster charging and I like the redundancy.
    Best of luck on your journey! Happy trails!

    Amazing! I thru-hiked in 2022 and I think you've got it down :) I'm excited to follow along. Unsolicited advice... definitely bring the sea-to-summit sleep sack :) It was something I went back and forth on for so long and am SO happy I started the trail with it. Not only did it keep my sleeping bag feeling clean, but it's just so cozy for those nights that get a little 'too' cold. Best of luck out there!!

    Looks good, my suggestion is to also bring some moleskin. I cut the moleskin to fit around the blister(sometimes 2 layers),then cover with Leukotape.This helps keep the pressure off the blister. I'd also bring more Leukotape. ✌🏼

    • @DaleOnTheTrail
      @DaleOnTheTrail  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Great tip with the moleskin, as far as more leukotape, I have some ready in my resupply boxes but this should last for a few weeks. All tips are more than welcome lol no matter how prepared, there will be ways to better adapt.

    Another great video. That pack is like a magic bag of holding, you just kept pulling more and more things out of their. And protection, my guess is a Katana 😂

    • @DaleOnTheTrail
      @DaleOnTheTrail  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Haha, it seems like that, there is a strategy to packing your backpack and if you are intentional about it, you really can cram a lot into it. But it’s a double edged sword because more stuff=more weight. And definitely a katana hahaha

    Dale - nice video. You may not have a ton of options regarding new shoes, especially HOKAs when you start your hike. When I did my 2023 AT hike, I had my family send me a new pair about every 450miles. I purchased all of them ahead of time (strongly suggest you go up one full size) and our local shoe store gave me a nice deal. I will say, I did have to purchase a pair on the trail at Delaware Water Gap. The rocks in PA are brutal and basically shredded the new pair I had started PA with. I also replaced the standard inserts with those green ones and had a new inserts every 1000miles or so. Basically with every other pair of shoes. As for sleeping bag liners - I picked up a silk one from a hiker box at Neel's Gap. Very light weight but wow did it make a difference under my 20degree quilt. I would consider one of those vice that Sea to Summit but that's just me. As for sleeping bag sack - I used a heavy weight contractor's bag, took my sleeping bag and just stuffed it into the bag and it compressed into every void in the bottom of my pack. I had a large bag for my clothes (far larger than needed) but it allowed my clothes to press flat as well. I wore a 55L Hyperlite and as you known from the amount of rain last year, I got soaked almost everyday going through Vermont, NH and Maine and my stuff was always dry. I see a comment you are at 24lbs. Is that including food and water?

    • @DaleOnTheTrail
      @DaleOnTheTrail  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thank you very much for the Advice and I had given the thought of pre-buying several pairs of shoes and may still consider it. These are my second pair of Hokas and for the thru hike I switched to a wide. Before buying multiples I just wanted to be certain these will work out. Just a little nervous. The superfeet insoles are the last thing on my list to pick up, they really do make a difference. The 24lbs is with food etc but with only one smart water bottle. I probably wasn’t clear on that.

    • @chaosncheckt9356
      @chaosncheckt9356 Před 6 měsíci

      @@DaleOnTheTrail Wow, 24lbs is a perfect weight. Rarely and I mean rarely did I fill both my Smart Water bottles. Normally I would if I knew there was a particular long stretch with no water or I plan to stealth camp away from a water source. For me, I kept my standard width and started the AT with my standard size and for me that was a huge mistake. By the NOC almost all of my toe nails were black and feet hurt like heck. Wife sent me a larger pair and what a difference. I was right around the 100 mile mark and my feet had grew a full size. Best of luck

      Yes the weather is something we keep a close eye on and if the weather is scheduled to be really bad, I’ll decide to either get off trail or hunker down in a shelter. There are three walled, log shelters with a roof, spaced out along the trail every 5-15 miles or so. I’ll be careful… if that’s an option

    Sigh...Are you concerned that bigfoot is going to eat you? Have you watched Deliverance too many times?
    I don't have anything against guns...I have many... but I'm certainly not bringing one on my thru hike. Sometimes you have to have faith that the world isn't an evil place that's plotting against you.
    You say that it's a personal choice. My personal choice is that I not have jumpy dudes on the trail pointing guns at me if I rustle the bushes when I go pee.

    • @kmichaelp4508

    • @AcrylicGoblin
      @AcrylicGoblin Před 6 měsíci +3

      @@kmichaelp4508 How many PCT or AT hikers have been killed in situations where a gun would have saved them? Seriously, look into it. For the PCT, which I'm hiking, the answer is zero in the entire history of the trail. Guns and ammo are heavy, that weight could be used to bring things that are actually useful.
      Ironic that you would call me phobic, as I'm able to enjoy my trip without clinging to a firearm.
