As a Jazz musician I'd strongly suggest just checking out the full album this song is from To Pimp A Butterfly is a work of art front to back
I will
@@MusicShed I'm definitely excited. I know there are tons of jazz influenced beats that you will love!
Yes! He has many famous jazz musicians on it
@@MusicShed Terrace Martin and Kamasi Washington are all over the TPAB production 👍🏾
@@CecilCanady And Thundercat !
The fact that u knew it was Pharrell just based off the chords !!!!! So impressive
Pharell also likes to start off alot of the songs he produces with a 4 count, so the DA DA DA DA at the beginning is another clue.
It was written on my screen. I’m not that good!
@@AM-dd6dx Exactly!! That's how I'm able to tell and you can also tell he's uses the Roland TR808. His bass is always recognizable! One of the greatest
It’s not the cords that give it away. It’s the four count beat atstart of this song
@@MusicShedwhy did you say "that's gotta be Pharrell" 💀
Thundercat is actually quietly featured on this track.
ya that little dead homies track at the beginning? he did the bass and harmonies for that. god I wish it was a full track
He’s behind a lot of the production on tpab
No quietly at all.
"I can't believe I never hear this before I mean shame on me" literally me when I listened to TPAB years after it came out
To P.I.M.P a Butterfly is one of the GREATEST álbuns I ever heard and one of greatest injustice on the Grammys
the beautiful thing about being late to hearing a legend in the making is that you get to have the first experience a lot of us would like to relive, Kendrick’s discography is an incredible thing to get to discover for the first time
Amen
A great Kendrick song to react to is How Much A Dollar Cost. Take my word, outside of the incredible music production you will undoubtedly appreciate, the story telling will garner immense emotions.
This song helped me a lot
if anyone deserves multiple "5-bys" it's Kendrick.
this album is a 10/10 front to back no misses just pure music
The album he just released, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, might be my all time favorite rap album. It blew me away. The messages he conveys throughout the album are immaculate and sonically it feels amazing.
Keep watching this week!
I definitely recommend the song, "U" off of the same album. The horns are great and Kendrick gets very introspective.
The whole album "To Pimp A Butterfly" is a masterpiece! I'd definitely recommend checking it out in its entirety!
Hip-Hop!! Honestly, that’s a fantastic point about Kendrick rapping like a horn player, but I also get drummer as well from his rhythm. The second verse of Alright in particular is where I feel like his flow is reminiscent of fills with those really cool polyrhythms. Those little layered harmonies are so good, almost horrific and ominous too. His lyrics are just genius on top of that. Kendrick Lamar is truly one of the genre-defining artists of our time. His stuff is always poignant, potent, and punctual. Pharrell’s production is just insane too, he does his THING on that hook. One of my favorite songs of all time off one of my favorite albums of all time: “To Pimp a Butterfly”. 🦋🔥
I must admit I've watched dozens of Reactions from a walks of life. From a Homeless person to a Ceo. But my favorite reactions are the Musicians. Because I'm actually learning about Music just watching musicians dissect Kendricks Music .
A lot of saxophone that you hear is also done by great producer, songwriter, saxophonist (and keys player!), Terrace Martin! He branches between the jazz and hip-hop realm like Robert Glasper does. Huge names featured all across this album...
Found your page here in 2024 fresh off the Kendrick Drake beef. So awesome to see Kendrick’s music appreciated. He’s definitely ahead of his time. This is an old video but I’m looking forward to watching your KDot playlist.
As a musician... His live performance on SNL is fantastic. You would dig it. His performance on Jimmy Fallon too!
Fun fact. Robert Glasper played on like 9 songs on the TPAB album. Great review!!!
Alright-Is a song i listen to just to get my head in the right place when there is doubt watching this though watching him hitting the keys is just as inspiring this is a great song Kendrick and Pharrel are both ahead of their time
NEED TO DO WESLEY’S THEORY by Kendrick!!!!
On the rhythm side, the downbeats in this track are nuts. Floats like a butterfly
This song became the anthem for The Black Lives Matter movement where citizens, of all colors and creeds, chanted it in the streets.
If you do any more Kendrick tracks, you absolutely must have "auntie diaries" or "sing about me, dying of thirst"
He's an artist beyond just hip hop. his ear from music is insane. Also Pharrell made the beat
Great reaction! Would love to see you react to TPAB front-to-back, I think you would get a lot out of it and it's a very cohesive concept album. I think you're on point with the horn player comparison, I find his listening skills really inspirational - for instance, when he goes on that run starting with "I can see the evil, I can tell it, I know it's illegal," the way his accents line up with the snare line blows my mind. Reminds me of a Brian Blade or Chris Dave track, something where you have a very active drummer in sync with a soloist. That particular quality holds up across all his work, but the instrumentals on TPAB and Untitled Unmastered really highlight it. The guy's a once-in-a-lifetime talent imo.
I've been a fan of K-Dot since Overly Dedicated. Each album is 🔥. Definitely should do alot of reactions for him!
This was fantastic. You do just a great, heartfelt, musically knowledgeable job. Thank you.
Thank you 🙏
Your sons sounds awesome.
They are
I respect the fact that your starting to notice the intersection between real jazz and real hip hop
So the producer Flying Lotus helped with the production of TPAB, and while he wasn't the only producer, his style and essence is strewn all over. You MUST watch/listen to "Never Catch Me" by Flying Lotus/Kendrick Lamar. The track also has Thundercat on bass. Kill three birds with one stone, but if not, you absolutely must check out flying lotus at some point.

When doing future Kendrick videos, please consider doing something with the Heart part 5. I am still learning more from every listen.
i’m like yourself in the fact that the first time I hear a song I hear the instruments and the melody of the voice but this is one guy that you can’t afford to overlook the words and what he is saying tho 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
Highly recommend going through this entire album, as well as his newest release. While you're at it, treat yourself and spend time with Kendrick's entire discography. You won't be disappointed.
I love that you react to music like it’s a ride! So good
YES YES YES!!! Kendrick is an icon. You need to react to more of his wonderful music
so happy i found this channel so I can re live my first time litsening to all these works of art, keep up the good work!
This album has to be listened to from beginning to end because it tells a story. So starting the middle loses a bit of context. It’s also very jazzy in parts too. But great review 😭🤩
This album is a masterpiece, it's really nice seeing your perspective on jazz features in Hip Hop production, you should absolutely explore it way way more, this album especially.
there is a gorgeous arrangement of this song in the black panther 2 trailer, absolute must listen
Full album (To Pimp a Butterfly) please!!! It will truly blow your mind from beginning to end.
Really cool to see this, David. Many times Zack and I shared our love for Kendrick together back in the day. Really cool to see your perspective!!
James! I love it dude!!! Great to hear from you
Loved this reaction! First time I ever heard this song it hit different and love seeing someone experience that same feeling for the first time! Gotta listen to the full To Pimp a Butterfly Album as it's heavily Jazz influence with the likes of Thundercat and other amazing Jazz influenced creators and bassists coming together
The song where he’s screaming in a hotel room is called god is gangsta to follow this it is also a master piece. My childhood friend is actually in the intro of this song filmed crying.
Kendrick has been someone That’s helped me thru so many dark times, and now with his new album dropping a few days before my moms death I am so grateful for him. He is truly a profit for the new age. The most potent song off the new album in my opinion is Mother I Sober ft Beth gibbons from portishead (one of the most amazing divine bands ever)
And if I could recommend you at least listen to Sing about me , I’m dying of thirst off his album good kid maad city. So incredible.
Just some minor criticism I loved the video but if you ever have sound issues like that it would be nice to cut maitanence out but I love the stuff bro.
I'm a person who is very analytical and passionate about music and enjoy an array of genres and finally make music for a living and this is definitely THE channel to go to, if you're really passionate and into conversation about music. I love your channel, the way you speak, your open mind and your expertise, this is much much more than a reaction channel. Much love from Germany!
And I just got a new Hofner bass!
u got great energy coming at this record bro
THIS REACTION IS SO DOPEE
Oh hey there! The last time I saw a video of yours was back when you were watching will Ramos screaming! Which actually brings up an interesting point. You were talking about the skill it takes to rap like this and to not run out of breath. Believe It or Not There is an overlap going on between will Ramos and Kendrick Lamar in their vocal technique. Diaphragmatic compression is being used by both of them to narrow down the space in their throat that is actually being used to create the noise. By doing this they don't actually have to have a huge air capacity in their lungs to get out a lot of lines. They just drastically lower the amount of air necessary to make the noise to begin with. A lot of rappers cheat this by just rapping in vocal fry(drake). Most rappers know about diaphragm compression, But especially the old school rappers. Busta Rhymes being an obvious example of someone who used it to get out alot of lines without having to take a breath.
Technique is critical to artistry
Hey David love the reactions and appreciate your appreciation for the musicality of all these great artists! Found you from the System of a Down 5BY and they are phenomenal! I would like to recommend a 6BY for the band Staind. If you haven't ever heard them or heard very little they have so many beautifully put together tracks. The songs that I would recommend are:
Its Been A While
Outside
Zoe Jane
So Far Away
Right Here
Something to Remind You
Really hope that you see this and give these guys a shot because these 6 songs are all so amazing!
So many good Kendrick tracks to recommend. Just more please. The new album just dropped 3-4 days ago
This whole album is heavily jazz influenced. You were correct about the Pharrell production. That's also him saying the "we gon be alright" part. You gotta check out the entire album if you liked this.
Please do more reactions from this album! Def his most jazzy
u said it a true masterpiece
This came out with perfect timing. I just got to spend my lunch break at work hanging out in the Music Shed
Happy Lunch break!
He’s a vibe
you need to do "Money trees" from kendrick is just another vibe! i love your content!
it's crazy how much musical value there is that doesn't even exist in the album, it's just in the music video
The best reaction ever ❤
Just so you know most of this album was done by one band (with some extra production like this one from Pharrell). And the band are all great jazz musicians. Robert Glasper Jr, Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, Thundercat, and Chris Dave. That sax you hear is kamasi I believe
We Cry Together off his new album is the best track I've heard in years. Truly amazing. Please react to "We Cry Together" 🙏
You're going to need therapy after this song. If your relationship resembles this song, GET OUT!!
Would love to see your thoughts on Never Catch Me (Feat. Kendrick Lamar) - Flying Lotus
that’s a great reaction.
your kids got some good ears
Y’all musicians are crazy skilled dawg lol
I really liked how you knew it was pharell off the chords had me surprised
I like how he Delivered his bars as if his voice was a drum. And took on that Cadence. As if his actual voice was the instrument. Usually if hear this it more like in a Be Bop style where they aren't actually using words. But here Kendrick is t Be Bopping he's actually using words and ryming words instead of sounds.
on that album you should listen 🎶 too.."How much a dollar cost." beautiful 🎵 🎶
This guy is awesome
If you haven't already you should check out Kendrick's superbowl performance. Great video as usual! Glad you enjoyed it and love your passion for music
Thanks Howie 👍🏾
He has been known to do that ALot He does that also on the Alright song where he raps rapidly as if his voice was a drum. The cadence was a drummers cadence not a Rappers..
This video really made me wanna learn piano.
Love the videos man. If your sons havent suggested it yet, Cordae's 'Coach Carter" is worth a listen
12:31
Can't say I ever saw that last small shot of the video the last few times I watched it. Seems like a call back to his line in "Money Trees" that states,
'Everybody gon respect the shooter, but the one in front of the gun lives forever."
When do you do the full TPAB album!!?? It will be legendary
you are fantastic
I bet your son LOVES THIS!😁🤗
I think you’d love the entire to pimp a butterfly album
SHOUTOUT ZACK X NOAH 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This video is aging well
well, thank you
would love to hear your musical take on Kendrick's new album (a Double LP) :)
I'm surprised that you haven't listened to more songs off of To Pimp A Butterfly. Especially since the entire album is so Jazz based
When he says I’m Lucy it’s a double entendres Lucy is actually Luci short for Lucifer talking about how the devil is on his back talking about ritches and B*tchz and but God is telling him how to look out for your people who are in hard times from across the pond in Uk love your reaction 😊
You HAVE to do King kunta. I feel as though you’d love it
Lol really?! No one noticed the misspelled thumbnail. “Ken-Dick”. It’s wonderful.
Spot on! It is Pharrell wow lol
Maaannn please get through this whole to pimp a butterfly album. Quite literally one of the greatest albums ever made.
DO “U” BY KENDRICK LAMAR PLEASE!!!
please do a live reaction to for free interlude
We never did get that full TPAB analysis damn
We didn’t!
@MusicShed It's been a minute since we got a Kendrick reaction. You think it's still out of the question? The entire album has jazz elements, I think you'd enjoy it alot
Totally not out of the ? at all
@@MusicShedI wanna see your reaction to Wesley's Theory, For Free?, etc
I’ll play this with live with him July 18th, 2023 in Milwaukee! I’ll be rapping with all of my rap/R&B friends on July 18th. Then on July 19th, 2023 I’ll be releasing my first rock album! Hopefully will be able to make enough money to pay for the rest of my college education and a house in Milwaukee.
#delusional
Breath control is very very difficult especially when you're doing rapid fire rap. Most people if they had to do their album like I said they wouldn't be able to make it through it because it requires so much for the delivery. You can only get that birth control through practice there is nothing else. It's just like being a singer you don't gain that better control over your lungs unless you are using them to the degree that you need to. For me as a rapper it's much easier to compared to when I would play the flute because it is a very lung demanding instrument. And you have to practice this because if you don't you are going to performance at that degree you will pass out if you don't practice. I want to listen to me and my mom used to do is sing while you're on a treadmill or sing and snap out the Rhythm while you're walking. There are ways to find practice in Daily things that you do. It just doesn't substitute for the artistic practice that you have to do just to maintain your skill.
Am jst starting watching ur videos... Do don't have a channel where u teach music or make it??
hip hop is jazz dawg
You should really check out the new Motionless in White song with Bryan Garris of Knocked Loose. Would be very interested to hear your thoughts!
You don’t have to react to it but you should DEFINITELY listen to ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’ by Kendrick as a jazz musician you’ll love it. It’s one of the best albums EVER made.
From start to finish.. That’s important.
do untitled 3 kendrick lamar live
"Ok so where was I?..." 🐵🍑
SUBSCRIBING TO THIS 🔥
I know I'm late, but if you want to get into some of the musicality of rap I highly recommend checking out JID. When it comes to flows and cadences, he's arguably the most versatile artist to come out in a LONG time
