      Yes. It matters. Erasure is a thing. Bi erasure exists for absolute certain, but so does gay/lesbian erasure. Some people are strictly homosexual, the same way that some are strictly heterosexual. One is extremely marginalized, and one is the societal norm. Let's make sure everyone is seen, no?

    • @LesbianSchool
      @LesbianSchool  Před 4 dny +8

      @@Favoritefruitisblackberries I can explain. Sometimes it takes women a while to really know their sexual orientation and have clarity.
      Most women don’t come out as lesbian or bi until their mid to late 20s (or even much later). Because young girls are socialized to be heterosexual starting from birth, many women don’t tap into their same-sex attraction until later. Chappell Roan grew up attending church 3x a week which also makes it more difficult to accept your true sexuality. It’s very suppressed.
      She only dated men up until a few years ago. She was dating a man for 4 years and for two of those years she was writing music for her album. She has stated in interviews that she was “fantasizing” about women while with her boyfriend.
      So yes, My Kink is Karma is about a man. She is now very clear about her sexual orientation.
      This is a very common experience that lesbians or bi women go through.
      Most lesbian don’t have the luxury of coming out as teens and skipping the dating men part.
      I hope this helps.

      @@LesbianSchool idk here's my opinion. I kind of believe you are born with your sexual orientation because what you're attracted to just doesn't go away. You can't change that. Your sexuality to me is based on what you're attracted to. For example I'm bi & even though I'm engaged to a man, I will still always be bi because I am still attracted to women. Just because she chose not to date men anymore doesn't mean she's automatically gay now because she's attracted to both genders still. It just means she's still bi with a preferred preference. But to each their own..

    • @li.moreau
      @li.moreau Před 15 dny +15

      @@Victoria-dj7it Hey, lesbian here who used to date men. I need you to understand that Chappell Roan in the video and in other interviews has repeatedly stated "I am a lesbian and I am not attracted to men." You're valid, but there is a difference between YOU and other people. Do you understand that? YOU are not Chappell Roan. Chappell Roan has said repeatedly that she is not attracted to men. In her Pitchfork interview, she explicitly states "I am not attracted to men." Not just that she won't date men again, but "I AM NOT ATTRACTED TO MEN." It could not be clearer.
      Society pressures a lot of gay people into dating the opposite gender. It's quite frustrating that no one would question it if a gay man says that he was only pressured into dating women but doesn't like women. No one questions that Elton John is gay, even though he used to be married to a woman. Do better. YOUUUUUUUUUUU are not Chappell Roan. Chappell Roan is a person who has repeatedly said that she is a lesbian and is not attracted to men. YOU are not that person.

      @@LesbianSchool There was no point in time where she was bisexual. She used to identify as bisexual because she hadn't figured herself out yet. :) It's doing a disservice to her and other gay people who were pressured by our heteronormative society to date the opposite gender to say they "used to be" bi.

    I remember when no one cared who people slept with and to me that is way more inclusive and understanding instead of having your entire personality built around it. Why can’t she just be an amazing person and talented song writer which she is. I guess its different for us bisexual people. We never really get remembered by the community so we don’t tend to worry about those things lol 😊

    • @LesbianSchool
      @LesbianSchool  Před měsícem +25

      I don’t see her entire personality being built around her sexual orientation. It is just one part of her whole personality. But that one part of her identity is VERY important to celebrate. We live in a world where there is still massive homophobia and only in the past 10 years or so have women been able to come out as lesbian in the entertainment industry without huge backlash.
      Representation of sexual and racial minorities is incredibly important. When you say “ I remember a time when It didn’t matter who someone slept with…..”. Can you tell me when that was?? People have ALWAYS cared who others are attracted to - but in the past it’s been in a way where people are afraid to come out and stay closeted due to fear.
      For lesbians, it’s nice to finally get some songs in mainstream music that are about OUR lesbian relationships. It’s music for everyone but it’s extra special to us.
      Also, your bi identity is valid too. I do understand there is Bi erasure in our society and wish it was different.

      Preach! Lesbian representation is always a joy to see, just as it is a joy to see bisexual representation-regardless if they have a same or opposite sex partner!
      Despite both lesbians and bisexual women experiencing same-sex relationships, we each unfortunately experience stigma/hate in different ways.
      (Common examples being: lesbians can be turned straight, bisexuals need to pick a side, lesbians have hate men/have trauma, bisexuals are cheaters, same sex attraction is p*rverted…)
      You know that same-sex attraction has existed long before all the labels we have nowadays.
      However, just like queerness existed before terms like lesbian and bisexual came to be, homophobia also existed. There just wasn’t a name for that yet either.
      Homophobia wasn’t a “problem,” because that was the norm. Same-sex attraction was considered deviant/sinful/wrong by the general public. Those who experienced same-sex attraction had to hide that part of their sexuality in order to stay safe. They may even believe that they are deviant, because they don’t know anyone else like them.
      Sexuality is fluid and uniquely experienced by everyone (including those who identify as straight). No one will have an identical experience to someone else or ever perfectly fit a rigid definition of a label.
      However, the way people choose to personally identify with these terms help us find those with *similar* experience. We can find community, solace, and support from one another-especially in the face of adversity and prejudice. It helps us know we are not alone

      @@junipersprites2167 these are great points. As someone who came out as lesbian 25 years ago and has seen the progression of gay rights over time, I can’t stress enough how important representation is. My coming out process would have been soooo much easier if I’d known someone in mainstream media I could relate to.

      "No one cared who people slept with"
      I'm sorry but literally when?? For decades gay relationships were hidden. Gay/bi/pan people hid the "abberant" part of themselves publically for fear of career or even life-threatening scandal. Same-sex marriage was illegal. Same-sex couples couldn't adopt. Miss me with that "what's the big deal?" nonsense. As cruel as it may sound, at least bi folk had the _chance_ to be happy in the world we used to live in. It's not perfect but at least now exclusively gay folk do too, and they deserve to be just as proud of the progress that's been made, and to be open and vocal about it. I'm so extremely bored of the whole "what's the big deal? who cares" shtick when a person (usually a woman) announces that they're explicitly gay. Not everyone who's queer is bi.
