Tom Paris: "The fault is not mine, sir. Cadet Albert must answer."
Admiral Brand:"Cadet Albert answered with his *life*! As you should have done if you had any sense of honour!"
Bro admiral brand has no humor she barley smiles just slightly smirks at picard.
Spoken like a true klingon admiral
"You're disgraced us sir! You've shamed us sir! You shall answer!"
"A captain who loses the starship's dedication plaque... has no friends at Starfleet Command."
That's my style sir!
If only there were someone around who could sense deception.
If only....
"RAAAAAWWWWRRRR!!!" "Captain, I'm sensing hostility..."
@@kev3d made me laugh
I think having Troi sense their emotions and report on whether or not they're lying would be classed as some form of interrogation. It's like using a lie detector on someone; there's certain rules about when and how you can use it.
The same kind of principle extends to full Betazoids too; Using their mind reading abilities specifically to extract information for the purposes of trial would be classed as a form of interrogation, and as such would not be allowed in a court room.
You could, however, use these techniques in an actual interrogation/interview setting as that's where you would be gathering information and whatnot.
I guess that particular walking plot device would have trivialized the whole ordeal, hence her exclusion by the writers. Honestly I wish she was excluded more often.
Man, this guy is terrible at planning. I doubt he'd ever be able to pull off a galaxy-wide plot that Starfleet didn't see coming.
This aged badly given that he assembled Novafleet right behind everyone's nose.
@@basilofgoodwishes4138 Look at when I posted this.
@@basilofgoodwishes4138That's the joke.
I mean it fell apart after an old classmate called him a jerk and he threw a temper tantrum...
What is this about?
Having a Vulcan sitting on the investigative panel I'm sure was no accident (pardon the pun) - that steely focused determination, the cold logic in assessing everything with sharp clarity. He KNOWS the Cadets are bullshitting, but alas can't prove it!
Oh man. Counselor Troi would have been perfect for this scene lol
Picard: Counselor?
Troi: … I sense nothing but “shut up Wesley.”
Picard: Whoops.
If Locarno just had the humility to own up to his mistake and take responsibility... I have a feeling he would have been able to stay at the academy.
Not to mention, Locarno's expulsion would lead to his death at the hands of Beckett Mariner 11 years later.
*at his own hands out of pure stubbornness while Mariner tried desperately to get him to safety.
There was no reason for him to try to defuse that bomb other than his own pride. There was a warp capable ship actively trying to beam him aboard and put light years between them and the bomb, but he was so overconfident and so stubborn he raised shields to block the transporter and died for it
the pay wall for a bomb... fuckin hilarious
Well that and a Ferengi Paywall.
And then suddenly Tom Paris shows up in season 5 of Lower Decks and wonder why he looks familiar.
As much as this is one of the best episodes, I do have a minor issue in that I wish Josh's father WASN'T a member of Starfleet. It feels like there was never any Federation civilians, only starfleet and the occasional ambassador
Have to agree, see a lot of validation that nepotism goes on.
He shouldn’t have been allowed to investigate
I thought he was?
I agree.
We saw too many of Starfleet members and ambassadors only, but Federation civilians with or without profession of another kind? Or old Federation members like Andorians by occasion at all?
Very rare. 🤔
Cadet Team Navagator is freed under the : Im Too Beautiful To Be Guilty Prime Directive.
Gets 'em off every time.
"Seeing as how you are hot, all charges are dropped. Just don't let it happen again, or get old or fat."
So, this is what Tom Paris was in jail for...
Now imagine why Boothby is the gardener. 😅
Yep but I'm glad admiral brand wasn't in voyager she had no idea Janeway did a prison break for him and immediately gave him a rank of lieutenant after first episode. Take that admiral brand hahahaaa
Yeah, the writers didn’t want to pay royalties so they changed some names around
@@Mogget01 To be correct, the production company. The writers are employed.
@@Dowlphin yeah, I coulda phrased that considerably better, writers don’t get to decide that stuff, thank you for the correction
I know it would definitely be a rights violation, but... There is a Vulcan RIGHT THERE. He could easily mind meld and get the answer. Seems like a logical solution.
Unseen part of the Trial:
"THIS GUY SUCKS AND HE GOT ALBERT KILLED!"
"The Court finds 1st year cadet Beckett Mariner Freeman guilty of contempt. She will be punished with holodeck-cleaning duty for the next three months."
"Joke's on you lady! I love cleaning [REDACTED] out of the holodeck!"
I hope they have good jizz rags in the future."
After this, he changed his name to tom paris so people wouldn’t know who he was and what he had done
Nah, they're totally different people (I mean, both appear in Lower Decks, so figure).
They probably didn't want to pay royalties to the writer so he got transformed into an identical person but I think it's the same guy.
The actor who played both has come out and said that while that was an early concept for Paris, the two characters are polar opposites. Locarno is a suave charmer who puts on a guise of politeness and selflessness while at his core being a morally bankrupt narcissist who will trade his friends' lives for personal glory. Paris is a brilliant kindhearted man who deeply cares about others, but puts on a bad guy facade because the mistakes he made lead him down a bad path and he doesn't see himself as worthy of redemption. Only when forced does either let the mask slip.
The original plan was for it to be Nick Locarno in Star Trek Voyager, but for whatever reason, the writers instead decided to create a whole new character for him. Which was a good idea because I hated this whackjob, he had NO redeeming qualities!!!
Imo I found Captain Satelk a lot more intimidating than Admiral Brand. He seemed almost a bit psychopathic. Admiral Brand was just pissed off.
He was also in The Onion Movie too, I recognized his voice!

This is a very rank-heavy inquiry board for a flight safety investigation.
Sensors alone? With that window!?!
Damn, Tom buries him. What a heel turned.
What a tangled mess of beans.
Using Blue Angels' "Day in the Life" as a reference, the squadron was flying paint on the other planes.
It's strictly visual and no way anyone but the lead is looking at their instruments and listening to vocal commands.
The end of Nick of Nova Squadron was played out in Lower Deck thanks to a Ferengi paywall.
😆
Only wish they could've expanded this a bit further by having Admiral Satie return.
Admiral Brand: It is difficult to proceed any further without a deeper investigation. I have therefore recalled Admiral Satie back to duty as special counsel.
Picard: Oh no!
Admiral Satie: Yes, Picard, I'm back. And I know the conspiracy behind this all already; that you are involved and somehow you've been engaging with the Romulans about this! I'll take you down this time Picard!
I wonder why there is not a Betazoid present at any trial or hearing in the federation. Troi is often not on the enterprise when she would be most valuable as well…
I think mind reading goes against the fundamental principles of the federation. It would be more of a style of an oppressive government. Plus, saying "he's thinking about that" is not exactly evidence.
"The Fifth Amendment provides protection to individuals from being compelled to incriminate themselves. According to this Constitutional right, individuals have the privilege against self-incrimination."
while that is referring to the modern day US Constitution, it is a very safe assumption that they have similar articles and I highly doubt the Federation courts would rule against "thinking about something" being functionally equivalent to forcing someone to answer a question or forcing them to testify, thus using telepathy to interrogate or question someone would be a violation of a fundamental Sapient Right and thus anything picked up by telepathy would be inadmissible as evidence and blurting out "he's lying" or "I sensed him think about when he was murdering them" would result in an immediate mistrial just as much as if a bunch of evidence that was acquired without a warrant were to be presented
also "I sensed [x]" would literally be hearsay and thus also inadmissible
so to answer your question directly: because they actually respect Sapient Rights and understand the basic idea of "those who surrender liberty for security will have neither" as shown extensively in a different episode involving courts that did, incidentally, include a betazoid, and given the entire premise of that that episode is seems almost as if it were done as a direct answer to your question
Read in a source (and I don't remember which one) that Tom Paris's character was based on the character in the video but they changed the name cause they didn't want to pay royalties to the writer of the episode.
Sure, but also, this character is kind of irredeemable. He's a liar and a bully who puts his own career ahead of the truth. He does the right thing at the end, when he has nothing left to gain by letting the others go down, but that's the bare minimum decency. On the other hand, Paris's crime was inspired by higher principles, by wanting to help people who needed it. He rebelled against the institution of Starfleet, but not its spirit.
It’s also because Locarno was viewed as irredeemable.
A lot of that is simply because the same actor played both roles, and both got into a lot of legal hot water. I expect there was some cross-pollination when the Paris character was built, but not an outright copy. A critical difference, two, really, was Paris completed the Academy. And Paris's father is a senior Admiral, its improbable lower ranked officers would have risked his ire by drop-kicking his son. Even if Admiral Paris verbally supported the decision.
There's also the similar story Paris tells about why he's infamous, he made a mistake resulting in death, and falsified records, only to confess. But Paris, unlike Lacarno, was on active duty, piloting a shuttle and crashed it, killing three other officers who were oassengers on the shuttle. Lacarno was not actually part of the collision himself, and no one in Nova falsified data, just took advantage of incomplete data to lie. And Lacarno did not confess, he took the blame after Crusher confessed.
This rumor would never existed if they had used a different actor.
@@manjackson2772 "Sure, but also, this character is kind of irredeemable." True, but Janeway straight up murdered Tuvix. So it's quite the merry band up there.
The Vulcan is showing a lot of emotion.
Oh boy. There weren’t enough beans in this hearing! So many lies!
Man he looks exactly like Tom Paris.
The idea that at this date in the future satellites wouldn’t be recording everything is laughable.
They were, that's why they were over 2,000 km closer to a planet than they said they'd be, they were using it to mask themselves because they knew the flight maneuver they were attempting was banned and dangerous
So if she was flying solely on sensor readings at the time, shouldn't the sensors have shown her the formation ships' positions just as well? - But OK, maybe a different scan scale. Effectively blind formation trust then.
And what's with the glowing triangle? 🤪
Some very good acting in this episode.
I can't see no Vulcan, all I see is Mr Lippman 😂
Wait, this is who Tom Paris was based on? Janeway wanted this guy on voyager??
Kind of! The actor said that Nick was a “bad guy pretending to be good” whole Tom was a “good guy pretending to be bad”. Or something to that extent. Either way, that’s why Tom was based on this guy and not exactly him. The writers felt that Nick was not redeemable
@@christophmalone6388That and they didn’t want to pay royalties to the writer of the episode.

Janeway: Mr. Paris, I've been reading up on recent academy activity and came across the incident with Nick Locarno.
Paris: Mmm-kay, I think I heard about it. Tried an illegal flight manuever and got a kid killed?
Janeway: Mr. Paris, cut the crap. Look at the screen - Nick Locarno is you.
Paris: No Ma'am. I am the son of Admiral Paris.
Janeway: Tom, fess up here. I had your DNA sent to the doctor and it came back positive. Nevertheless, we still need you at your post so I will merely demote you to ensign, then reinstate you 6 months down the road back to Lieutenant.
Harry: Sorry Ma'am, but I've been eavesdropping. You mean to tell me this lying sack of shit gets away this this and I still can't get a promotion?
Sounds like him too.
The only reason why this episode did not have 2 mins length was that Lwaxana Troi was not around...
And then Locarno gets a Genesis Device from the Ferengi.
You know, the original plan for Star Trek Voyager was to have Nick Locarno in that show. Instead, they created the character of Tom Paris for the actor, a MUCH better choice if you ask me!!!
Let's face it, the minute the Enterprise got involved Nova Squad was going to be found out.
Damn Wes, what did you get yourself into?
Cadet Paris
Originally it was gonna be Nick Locarno instead of Tom Paris that the actor was playing on Voyager.
I guess things will be different in the future, but TNG always has female officers referred to as “sir” rather than “mam “. That seems strange.
i do love me some Voyager :)
I didn't much care for this period in The Next Generation. Sure, many people, from the very beginning, didn't care for the way Wesley was always able to 'save the ship', but, just as many people liked the character Wesley. And his mom's character is smashing. Who doesn't like Dr. Crusher. But, I'm not certain that anybody wanted to see Wesley go down in shame. I'm not sure why they pursued this type of storyline and I don't think it added to the ending value of The Next Generation.
He didn't go down in shame. He did the right thing in the end and took his lumps. Then his renewed sense of honor took him out of Starfleet.
Backdoor pilot for a Starfleet Academy show they have been talking about doing for 40 years?
Shouldn't the Vulcan captain been able to sense that they were all lying?
Vulcans have the ABILITY to be telepathic, not all are, and he does look at them like he senses they are lying even if not clearly. Besides going by your instincts isn't really the vulcan way.
Gotta love how controlled the people are in the future. They don't need a gavel bang to get things back under control, just the single ring of a bell and everyone quiets down.
Okay, this is doubtless a stupid question, but have mercy, I'm a newbie....
Why are they calling a female officer Sir instead of Ma'am?
Some shows do that for whatever reason. Battlestar Galactica did it too.
Forgive me here but why is she calling the old lady sir? Or is the old lady just speaking for the man next to her and she's replying to him. Which brings up another question, why has she not been thrown in the brig for speaking for a man.
Sir is an honorable title, the admiral is above everyone in that room so the only appropriate responses are “Admiral” or “Sir”
@@wyettastone The person you replied even say "why has she not been thrown in the brig for speaking for a man." They are not asking questions, just plain misogyny.
