Can I just say how perfect I think this scene is? Like from the beginning pointing out how the police escalate protesters and then unfairly make the protesters themselves look guilty, to actually talking about BLM by name, to Mac realizing he should've stood up for the cause sooner, to Riley appreciating that he cares, to him understanding his white privilege and wanting a better world for his friends, to Riley getting to feel seen. It's just so perfectly executed in my opinion and I love it so much. And now I love this show even more for standing up for a real cause that matters and bringing up representation for it. Well done to everyone who went into creating this scene! 👏🏻 I would love to see more shows take a real stand like this. 😌

I wish more mainstream media did so. But I'm really glad this show is taking notice that police brutality and BLM are real issues and causes that matter still and caring about it isn't just a trend that happened last year but an ongoing fight for justice we need to pursue.

I watch and really like the show but... to be honest I think it would have been better if he had said the he doesn’t see Riley’s skin color, but sees the amazing human being she is. I think we should fight racism by defending the fact that nobody is better than anyone because of the amount of melanin in their skin. Yes, black people are victims of a historical process that institutionalized prejudice. Therefore , I think that we should fight this injustice recognizing the fact that there is only ONE race. The human race.

i'm still catching up amazon prime only has seasons 1-3 so i binged those in like 3 weeks...lol a season a week now im on season 4...which i love but i kinda miss Jack, so i keep going back to earlier seasons but i also have classes and work...so im not letting myself finish season 4 and start season 5 until im all caught up...i actually went back and watched a few episodes of the original show from the 80s, and i honestly prefer the current version/reboot

If you don't see the skin color, you don't see everything else that comes with being a person of color. Just seeing the person means also seeing the experiences that the person goes through, that creates the narrative of their life, the obstacles they overcome and ultimately the character and integrity that we have. Often, people who say "they don't see color" are trying to erase the uncomfortable reality of how some of their friends got to where they. If you are my friend, I want you to see my color and know what it took for me to work along side you, que up in line to vote, live in the same neighborhood.... basically the obstacles I had to overcome, still.have to overcome in order for some people to comfortably dismiss that struggle with.."I don't see color." Please...see my color and my character.

I kinda have mixed emotions about this promo. I wondered how long it would take-if ever-for the show to mention BLM. I am a senior citizen. I unfortunately grew up in a nearly all white community. I never felt there should be a difference in skin color. I moved after graduation to a big city to go to college. It happened to be in the South. I had many black friends and one day while having lunch with various friends one said to me-she was black-“you don’t see any difference, do you?” I had to clarify what she was even talking about. She laughed and said “My skin color”. Another time before I got married I took a few days for a vacation to the mountains with another friend of mine who happened to be black. A lady at work said to me once we returned, “what did you talk about-what did you have in common?” Like two single women would have nothing in common just because their skin was a different color. I was also asked unfortunately from a relative “What did people think?” I said, “I have no idea, I didn’t ask.” But what bothers me about Mac’s comment is, he obviously knows she’s black (more about that with my next comment) but wouldn’t it be better as if he didn’t notice a difference or at least that it doesn’t make any difference-that he just sees her as a person, howbeit a very beautiful one. Lol Now I do have a question, why does a biracial person like Riley is said to be Black when she is just as much White? After all, her mother is black but her father is white. The only person I ever heard speak of this was Shemar Moore who happens to be biracial and he spoke about how he was as much white as he is black. I don’t want to be disrespectful but I have never understood this situation. So Mac stating she is black kind of rubs me the wrong way and I wonder if this will be a touchy situation between him and Riley.
I don't think it will be a touchy situation; she is black just like she is white. Unfortunately, on top of that, we still live in a time where people are judged by how they look, so if you are darker skin you are presumed to be black and treated as a black person. My nephew is mixed and has to constantly explain and show his friends that his mother is black anytime he says he says he's black; just because he is pale, while my niece deals with the opposite because her complexion is darker. My sister has also talked about how her kids are seen and treated differently just because of the color of their skin at the diversity trainings she does.
I think he calls her black because she may identify as black. If you think about it, her father wasn't always in her life, so maybe she didn't have much connection to her white family. Also, in terms of 'institutional racism' (what Mac mentioned in the video), she will almost always be seen as black because of her skin color. Most institutions will not see her as white and black (biracial) because she is not white passing. I hope that makes sense!

Now, when I was talking about the black mother and white father I was referring to Riley the character who has a black parent and a white parent. And I wondered why so many times in this situation they are said to be black when they are just as much white. Your explanation made a lot of sense. I have never NOT noticed when one of my friends was black-it just never mattered to me. I did see the unfair treatment they received and have had many encounters with people whom I felt were being unfair or disrespectful due to this. I have also parted ways with white friends who seemed to have great difficulties because I had black friends. I have never seen The Hate You Give. I would feel terrible to think my friends of color would ever think I do not see THEM. Since I was a child I just always felt that GOD created black, red, yellow, and white to be equal. I am just as outraged as to how Asians are being treated right as I am for blacks. I never understood why Indians were treated poorly also. I’m just ignorant, I guess.

I know these shows have good intentions but it’s all become so political. Entertainment is supposed to be an escape. Plus literally all the shows are playing the same narrative in the context of how their show works. It might as well all be the same show.
these issues are important to discuss especially when its important to the people who write and act in the show. Lucas actually went to the BLM protests and Monica said she would deal with these issues in a more head on manner.. its not realistic if you pretend such issues dont happen and it doesn't take away from the entertainment factor..its still an action packed show. infact it meant a lot to POC that the matter was acknowledged as it should be since the cast is so diverse.

The cast didn’t write the script even if they are passionate about certain things. Lucas & the rest didn’t heavily influence it either. They didn’t have the power before. Remember when Lucas was suicidal in the 1st year of Macgyver due to the ex-producer verbal abuse & body shaming. The show didn’t do anything for him or to address those issues. No episodes on that. A lot of these shows is focusing on big current media driven things & pandering for viewers. Most people actually don’t care.

I think it's important to see color. Of course you treat everybody with respect and kindness regardless of their skin color, ethnicity, religion, etc, but it's also important that you recognize somebody for their history and their cultural practices. Saying that you don't see color is the same as saying everyone is similar.

Treating someone as a race because of their skin pigment is dumb af. Uniting under a skin color is equally dumb. It's being used as a political tool to separate and define us. To keep identifying under skin color is to remain under some kind of stigma or race bating agenda. Black people seem to be the only group that wants to continue the charade and Democrats are more than willing to take advantage of it. I watch and really like the show but... to be honest I think it would have been better if he had said the he doesn’t see Riley’s skin color, but sees the amazing human being she is. I think we should fight racism by defending the fact that nobody is better than anyone because of the amount of melanin in their skin. Yes, black people are victims of a historical process that institutionalized prejudice. Therefore , I think that we should fight this injustice recognizing the fact that there is only ONE race. The human race.

@@thaissouza6589 mais ou menos,não sou muito boa no inglês,mas do que eu entendi eles estavam no meio de uma manifestação do Black lives matter,ela estava falando sobre a cor dela e do Bozer (eles são negros),aí o Macgyver estava defendendo a manifestação e falando da luta dos negros durante os anos,aí o Mac falou sobre a etnia da Riley e sobre ela ser negra,aí a Riley perguntou algo como:Você enxerga que eu sou negra?(porque muita gente pensa que ela é latina por ser clara mas ela é negra),aí o Macgyver disse algo como:sim,eu enxergo você.

i'm still catching up amazon prime only has seasons 1-3 so i binged those in like 3 weeks...lol a season a week now im on season 4...which i love but i kinda miss Jack, so i keep going back to earlier seasons but i also have classes and work...so im not letting myself finish season 4 and start season 5 until im all caught up...i actually went back and watched a few episodes of the original show from the 80s, and i honestly prefer the current version/reboot

If you don't see the skin color, you don't see everything else that comes with being a person of color. Just seeing the person means also seeing the experiences that the person goes through, that creates the narrative of their life, the obstacles they overcome and ultimately the character and integrity that we have. Often, people who say "they don't see color" are trying to erase the uncomfortable reality of how some of their friends got to where they. If you are my friend, I want you to see my color and know what it took for me to work along side you, que up in line to vote, live in the same neighborhood.... basically the obstacles I had to overcome, still.have to overcome in order for some people to comfortably dismiss that struggle with.."I don't see color." Please...see my color and my character.

Yeah i agree too. I think he meant it as a friend. He sees her as a dear close friend he doesn't want to lose. But this is only a guess out of context because the beginning of this episode he asked her if she succeed to make her feelings go away for him. And that is the key
Nope. I think if they hadn't cut scene his next words would've been along the lines that he knows she's more than the color of her skin and would never treat her differently because of it. It's the person she is that's more important.

I kinda have mixed emotions about this promo. I wondered how long it would take-if ever-for the show to mention BLM. I am a senior citizen. I unfortunately grew up in a nearly all white community. I never felt there should be a difference in skin color. I moved after graduation to a big city to go to college. It happened to be in the South. I had many black friends and one day while having lunch with various friends one said to me-she was black-“you don’t see any difference, do you?” I had to clarify what she was even talking about. She laughed and said “My skin color”. Another time before I got married I took a few days for a vacation to the mountains with another friend of mine who happened to be black. A lady at work said to me once we returned, “what did you talk about-what did you have in common?” Like two single women would have nothing in common just because their skin was a different color. I was also asked unfortunately from a relative “What did people think?” I said, “I have no idea, I didn’t ask.”
But what bothers me about Mac’s comment is, he obviously knows she’s black (more about that with my next comment) but wouldn’t it be better as if he didn’t notice a difference or at least that it doesn’t make any difference-that he just sees her as a person, howbeit a very beautiful one. Lol
Now I do have a question, why does a biracial person like Riley is said to be Black when she is just as much White? After all, her mother is black but her father is white. The only person I ever heard speak of this was Shemar Moore who happens to be biracial and he spoke about how he was as much white as he is black. I don’t want to be disrespectful but I have never understood this situation. So Mac stating she is black kind of rubs me the wrong way and I wonder if this will be a touchy situation between him and Riley.
I don't think it will be a touchy situation; she is black just like she is white. Unfortunately, on top of that, we still live in a time where people are judged by how they look, so if you are darker skin you are presumed to be black and treated as a black person. My nephew is mixed and has to constantly explain and show his friends that his mother is black anytime he says he says he's black; just because he is pale, while my niece deals with the opposite because her complexion is darker. My sister has also talked about how her kids are seen and treated differently just because of the color of their skin at the diversity trainings she does.
I think he calls her black because she may identify as black. If you think about it, her father wasn't always in her life, so maybe she didn't have much connection to her white family. Also, in terms of 'institutional racism' (what Mac mentioned in the video), she will almost always be seen as black because of her skin color. Most institutions will not see her as white and black (biracial) because she is not white passing. I hope that makes sense!

Now, when I was talking about the black mother and white father I was referring to Riley the character who has a black parent and a white parent. And I wondered why so many times in this situation they are said to be black when they are just as much white. Your explanation made a lot of sense. I have never NOT noticed when one of my friends was black-it just never mattered to me. I did see the unfair treatment they received and have had many encounters with people whom I felt were being unfair or disrespectful due to this. I have also parted ways with white friends who seemed to have great difficulties because I had black friends. I have never seen The Hate You Give. I would feel terrible to think my friends of color would ever think I do not see THEM. Since I was a child I just always felt that GOD created black, red, yellow, and white to be equal. I am just as outraged as to how Asians are being treated right as I am for blacks. I never understood why Indians were treated poorly also. I’m just ignorant, I guess.

I know these shows have good intentions but it’s all become so political. Entertainment is supposed to be an escape. Plus literally all the shows are playing the same narrative in the context of how their show works. It might as well all be the same show.
these issues are important to discuss especially when its important to the people who write and act in the show. Lucas actually went to the BLM protests and Monica said she would deal with these issues in a more head on manner..
its not realistic if you pretend such issues dont happen and it doesn't take away from the entertainment factor..its still an action packed show.
infact it meant a lot to POC that the matter was acknowledged as it should be since the cast is so diverse.

The cast didn’t write the script even if they are passionate about certain things. Lucas & the rest didn’t heavily influence it either. They didn’t have the power before. Remember when Lucas was suicidal in the 1st year of Macgyver due to the ex-producer verbal abuse & body shaming. The show didn’t do anything for him or to address those issues. No episodes on that. A lot of these shows is focusing on big current media driven things & pandering for viewers. Most people actually don’t care.

I think it's important to see color. Of course you treat everybody with respect and kindness regardless of their skin color, ethnicity, religion, etc, but it's also important that you recognize somebody for their history and their cultural practices. Saying that you don't see color is the same as saying everyone is similar.
Seeing her skin color means he sees everything that comes with it, her experiences ane everything that shapes her identity. I don't think it is bad thing to say that someone.
