    1. Nasal Pillow - My favourite mask! Seals at the nostrils with little pillows that push up gently into the base of the nostrils
Pros- Small, lightweight, minimalistic. Easy to put on and take off. Seals well at lower / mid pressures, less red pressure marks on the face, great for beards and facial hair.
Cons - Can hurt the nostrils in the beginning. Not great at high pressures and can be hard to exhale.
    Can't breathe through your mouth.
    2. Nasal Cradle - Very similar to the Pillow mask but doesn't have the pillows that push up into the nostril.
Pros- All the same as the Pillow mask and no nasal irritation
Cons - Might not get the same great seal as the pillow. Can be a bit hit and miss at times. Can't breathe through your mouth
    3. Nasal Mask - The great all rounder. Covers the nose and has secure headgear.
Pros- Very secure with the straps, better seal at higher pressures, still small and minimal.
Cons - More red marks, more components, more adjustments ( clips and straps etc ). Bridge of the nose issues, can't breathe through mouth.
    4. Full Face Mask - Covers the nose and mouth
Pros - Can breathe through nose or mouth
Cons - Big and bulky, more prone to mask leaks, more red marks on face.
    5. Hybrid Full Face
Pro - Can breathe through nose and mouth, smaller than standard full face, no bridge of the nose issues. Less red marks
Cons - Can be hard to find the right fit, prone to mask leaks..

Review on the full face mask were very negative...and over the top IMHO for someone who had skin cancer on my nose....and extreme sensitivity on having any cpap mask directly contacting the nose or bridge area on my face. Being a freckled face fair skinned woman, having skin cancer surgery on my nose...was frightening for me in my 50's.

When I first started with a CPAP, I used a full face mask. It was cumbersome, but while going to sleep, I pretended I was a fighter pilot wearing a oxygen mask. That helped me get used to it. After many years of CPAP use. I now use nasal pillows. They seem to be the best for me as my pressure isn't too high.

Thank you for posting this video. I have been using a cpap machine faithfully for 17-18 yrs. The therapy works with the proper support & guidance of a certified pulmonologist and the info contained in this video is quite accurate. I know "many" people that were on nightly cpap therapy in the past but eventually went off it. In most cases, it was because they simply gave up too easily and refused to acknowledge and accept that a few adjustments to the machine's settings and/or a different type of cpap mask may have been needed in order to achieve maximum personal comfort & the longterm health benefits of nightly cpap therapy.
Thanks again for posting your many helpful videos. Greatly appreciated! Stay safe out there + I am looking forward to hearing more from you 🙃🙂

Several years ago I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. During a trial period with a CPAP machine I tried several different masks. I had ruled our Nasal Pillows because I thought that my constant issued with hay fever would make them impractical. After finding I couldn't tolerate the various full face masks I did try the nasal pillows . . . . and have never looked back! My machine is actually a Bi-Pap. As I understand it, it adjusts to a stronger air pressure when it detects that I haven't breathed out. This gets progressively stronger the longer I fail to breath out . . . . . so when I have pulled the mask off and forgotten to turn the machine off, I come back into the room to hear that air being pushed through the mask. When I did the initial in-hospital sleep study and then went to see the specialist for the follow-up visit, my test results were so bad that they set me up with a machine to take home to try it out, rather than arrange to re-do the sleep study, using the machine to determine that they had the correct settings. (So much for friends and family telling me that I was always tired because of the time that I went to bed . . . . I maintained that 6 hours sleep is 6 hours sleep, whether it be from 10pm to 4am, or from 4am to 10am.)

I started with the nose pillows mask and it drove me crazy trying to get a good fit so it didn’t leak. It sometimes took me 30-40 minutes of constantly adjusting it before it wouldn’t leak. Some nights I would get so frustrated I would give up and sleep without it.
I just switched to a nose cradle mask and I love it. It seals the first time almost every time and even then it only takes a slight adjustment to get it to seal correctly. BTW, I do have a mustache!

I *LOVE* my hybrid mask! It’s very comfortable and provides a good seal for me. I just had a slight issue with having my head gear too tight to begin with and it would pull my chin back to where my lips would open at night & I’d drool on myself. But after I talked with my sleep coach, I loosened it & it’s been good so far. I get a good seal, but mine also just has one large opening for the nostrils instead of being divided under my septum. I don’t think I could’ve dealt with the first nasal pillows because the plain oxygen tube they’d put on & up my nose in hospitals when I needed surgeries would irritate me with how they shot air right up my nose. I’d usually pull them out and rotate the nasal prongs to blow just below my nose. I also have a tendency to mouth breathe, so my hybrid mask has been awesome. So far, after adjusting the head gear, it’s held my mouth closed. I’ll further get some help with a chin strap that’s being delivered.
But regardless, it’s nice to actually sleep again and feel alive when I wake up instead of feeling like going straight back to bed after breakfast!

Thanks for such great explanations. I've tried many different ResMed masks, the last one the P10. Was finally able to get the extra small nasal pillow, it works great except for the sore nostril. Since quarantine, I've stopped using it but need to get back on it. Now I know why my nostril was sore & the solution to that. I'll start using it again. Thanks for saving me a lot of bother. Hi Ingrid, thanks for your comment. If you can't get use to the P10 and are still having sore nostrils after a while then check out the Philips Nuance nasal pillow mask. It has a gel nasal pillow and a 'shallow' profile which is softer on the nostrils. Hope all is well in Utah. All the best. Nick

I started watching your videos after I was switched from a CPAP machine to a BIPAP machine. There wasn't much of an introduction other than "here you go, mate. Enjoy!". The higher pressure seemed to want to blow my mask off my face. (AirFit F20) I switched to an AirTouch F20 and so far, so good. I also have a goatee and sometimes a bit more stubble and the seal was not very good. I also appreciated your tutorial on how to get to the Clinical Settings. I turned down the pressure as it was too much right away and I thought getting treatment was more important than not. Thanks to you I'm slowly ramping up the pressure to the prescribed amount and getting a good night's sleep. I'll have to get into the SleepHQ stuff and learn more about my treatment.

I've been trialing the pillows - in a over the top of the head fitting where the plumbing comes in on the top of the head and has 'alien head features' down each side. It seems to be working fine, but for me the secret is to have the strap tension as low as I can without it leaking.

    • @paulcompton7861
      @paulcompton7861 Pƙed rokem

@@louisbrucetatarsky9817 None I'm afraid. You just have to fiddle with it, and then fiddle again, then fiddle again!
My bed has a 'gate style' headboard and I fed the hose in through that with a twist around a bar.
One good tip is that if you are a bit stuffy, put some Vics Vapor Rub on a folded paper hand towel and set it near the air intake on the machine!
I didn't continue with it after two one month trials, one principle reason was that I couldn't find a way to keep my mouth shut and the face type mask wouldn't seal against my weird head shape. Also I simple didn't think it gave me enough benefit for the buck as the machine was waking me up etc, and I didn't like the idea of spending all that money to give Res Med my personal information to help them with marketing. If I'd been a severe case, perhaps worth it; but in my case, no.

I think it's essential that the hose comes out the top of your head and NOT out of your face. This lets you roll freely from side to side without losing seal. The straps on my nasal cradle are actually tubes that allow air flow on either side, so air flow is not blocked by cheek to pillow compression.

I'm blowing my nose all of the time with my sinus issues anyway, and the nasal cradle just makes it worse. And all of the creams I've tried don't work in the long term. So the hybrid full face mask doesn't work for me either. I'm afraid I'll just have to get a full face mask and be done with it, sadly. I've kind of given up and haven't used my cpap machine in a couple of months because of my sinus issues and the mask styles I have. I just can't afford, on a pension, to keep buying them. I am into just over 1 year with cpap, started with P10, did well then tried the Airfit F30 which I also did well and just recently got the nasal cradle N30. Have done well on it, but it seems to blow a lot of air around your nose which I find very annoying and am surprised when I get full marks the next morning, so basically I do not like it at all. I went to a very good sleep clinic when I got started and have been lucky to have gotten good advice. Although I should have been told about chin straps which I now know I need for the P10 and N30 cradle masks to work really well. Keep going it’s worth it. đŸ‘±đŸŒđŸŒˆ

Also didn’t have to have a completely stuffed nose as there were tubes in my nose so I could breathe while it was healing. 100% worth it to go through a little discomfort to improve the rest of your life. If i was your 'sleep doctor' i would have gradually increased you 1cm of pressure at a time over a few months to help your body get use to the added pressure and help your chest and diaphragm muscles adapt to the increase in pressure. 95"% of these so called sleep doctors have no idea so do your own research, learn how to read your own sleep data and then learn how to adjust your equipment for yourself. Some machine have little alarms that go off it they take the mask off but i find that's pretty frustrating. If it was me i'd probably either play around with the pressure levels to see if that makes a difference. You could potentially be taking the mask off because either there's not enough air coming in or potentially too much air coming in. I think if you're managing to get over 4 hours a night with the gear you're probably going to be doing pretty well in the long term. It's a great question though and a very common problem. Cheers

Are you sure it is you that is removing it and not some nighttime visitor that comes unbidden into your bedroom? Perhaps it's a succubus or a night troll. Or maybe it's just a family member that's screwing around with you. If that's the case, you're going to have to find a more permanent way to secure your mask and headgear. Something the creature/relative can not remove.
I'd suggest either stapling it to your head OR glueing it on. If you go the stapling route, make sure NOT to use a standard office stapler. The staples aren't long enough. You want to get them in deep. A hardware store or a Home Depot can supply you with a staple gun and really deep staples. An added bonus is that as the blood dries, it forms a crusty bond that seals the mask on even better.
Alternatively you can hot glue it to your head. I'd recommend a generous bead of hot glue applied to your mask, then quickly press it into your face before it cools. The mask will help stifle the screams of agony you may involuntarily let out so hopefully you won't disturb others trying to sleep. Pleasant dreams!
