India should be PROUD of this 4x4!! Mahindra Thar off-road review

  • This isn't like my normal detailed reviews, because this car will NEVER be sold in Australia.
    It's the Mahindra Thar, a small 4x4 off-roader that is designed to be ultimately capable. And it does so with an iconic silhouette, mega off-road performance, serious 4WD capability and a fun-factor that some other vehicles cannot match.
    I wish it was going to make it to Australia. But let me tell you - India is a lucky place to have a vehicle like this available for an affordable price!
    --
    I travelled to India with Mahindra to sample this and other vehicles sold in the brand's home market. Thanks to Mahindra for their accommodating attitude and friendly, professional manner.

    Mahindra started in the 40's by assembling the Willy's CJ2A & CJ3A under license. Then in the 50's, they bought the rights to make, modify and sell CJ3B under their own name. So every Mahindra SUV is an evolution of Jeep CJ3B. They have been making Jeeps since last 80+ years, so in essence Mahindra is as much of a Jeep maker as FCA/Jeep. But their focus has been on reliability, durability and being VFM. More than the Thar's design, the above mentioned attributes are what Jeep/FCA fears about Mahindra. Hence they'll fight tooth and nail to block Mahindra from launching Thar anywhere else in the world 🙃

    • @sanmarino647
      @sanmarino647 Před 7 měsíci +10

      Very well said. The challenge for FCA was to sell a 4x4 at price of Thar which is next to impossible.
      Mahindra has achieved all that due to years of diligence and hard work in developing a state of art product. They have certainly made a mark for themselves and though there are scopes for improvement, it has bought INDIAN BRAND to world stage.
      Thar is any day better than a Chinese made Jeep or Wrangler at the price they sell it in India 🇮🇳.
      I hope Mahindra grows & plays it’s role in development of India 🇮🇳 and Indian Brand of Automobiles. Well done Mahindra…….

The license that expired in 1990's was the temporary license to use 'Jeep' and 'CJ' brand names. In India, Mahindra is the owner of CJ3B jeep and all it's evolutions. Thar is a good vehicle with a very refined engine but does any one talk about the shortcomings and how Mahindra has tried to save money with some cheap tricks? Here are a few:
    1. Mahindra provide a manual spare key, not a remote lock and unlock key which we get even in basic car models.
    2. Automatic model does not have a dead pedal which is a must.
    3. They consolidated the window open and close buttons which is annoying as it is. They should have provided auto window up and down at a bare minimum. This is so unsafe. If you get down without closing the windows then it is such a pain. Real cheap.
    4. Cheap seats, driver seat moves when the brakes are applied.
    5. Rearview mirror is very small and does not provide a complete view.

      @@lukeclifton4392 Its more little complicated than you think, Mahindra had agreements with different owners of the Jeep brand. Initially, they obtained a license from American Motors Corporation in 1970 to continue producing Jeeps. After Chrysler acquired AMC in 1987, Mahindra continued their licensing arrangement with Chrysler to manufacture Jeeps.
      However, the permissions granted to Mahindra were limited to producing and selling Jeep vehicles exclusively within the Indian market. Mahindra's licensing agreements restricted the sale of Jeeps to India, without the authorization to sell these vehicles in other countries.
      But I have no idea why they launched Mahindra Roxor in US with that Jeep design.

  • @sanmarino647
    @sanmarino647 Před 7 měsíci +4

    It’s really well made Jeep - The Mahindra Thar. It’s a pity that the Aussies are denied such excellent vehicles due to legal tussle between Mahindra & Jeep which is owned by the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
    However in the United States 🇺🇸 the Mahindra Roxor is quite popular & now they are tapping the South African Market and the South American Countries too.
    The selling price in India 🇮🇳 will be lesser due to many factors and its equivalent price in Australian Dollars for a 4 x 4 vehicle is just peanuts. That said the cost would increase if / when it reaches the Australian shores. Even adding the shipping & import duties, Mahindra Thar would give tough time to its competitors.
    Certainly a nice car to own.

    • @stuglenn1112

      The Roxor is not street legal in the US, off road only. In some States with a bit of finagling/conniving you might get a plate on them but generally no. I consider the lack of a street legal version of these in the US an outrage.

    I was a strong supporter of Mahindra cars... but that Pune incident of ScorpioN wheel coming off while driving on highway resulting in the owner loosing his leg shook me. What shocked me was not the accident but what happened afterwards.
    1. The car burned in a fire 7 hours after the crash despite the battery being disconnected. The mystery deepens when you know he had the Diesel variant. Explain to me how a diesel car can burn like that? Diesel is very difficult to burn unlike the petrol even when we try to burn it deliberately. Secondly, if there was a fuel leak, it would have evaporated by that time. This looks like a foul-play by someone wanting to hide the evidence... If you are in a serious accident, your Mahindra may mysteriously burn for whatever reason! Engineering issue? Political powerplay? That is concerning.
    2. Mahindra responded to this not with a proper investigation, but by blaming the customer indicating that this happened due to "high speed", and they used the connected-car tech data and indicated the car had gone upto 120kmph during the drive cycle. Now, the key here is that they are not saying the driver was driving at that speed during the accident, but some other time during the ownership. Secondly, the road he was driving is the Samrudi Mahamarg Expressway that has a speed limit of 120kmph... This misuse of the connected car tech to blame the driver is concerning.
    3. Few months before the incident, someone else had posted in TeamBHP with photos of his ScorpioN's front wheel bending almost 90degree and nearly coming off in the parking lot. This looks like a similar incident, but just that it happened at thigh speed.
    Overall, I have lost my appetite for Mahindra, after how they dealt with this incident. I would now prefer a car whose company do not have much political influence to cause harm to me by bending the legal system in case of an accident.

    0313'24/1857h PST 🇺🇸 Thanks for the review in Mahindra Thar 4WD. The vehicle is good to drive on paved roads and that's it. The power is so less that I can hear it groan and starve if running through an off road conditions. This is the first time, I'm observing a review of an indian 4WD Mahindra Vehicle. The reviewer did not talk about the engine, both Diesel and Gas engines. There was also no mention if the vehicle has Power steering or Power breaks or climate control (Heating and cooling) There was also no comments on Lighting Systems (head lights) if it had LED or incandescent. so on and so forth. The reviewe'r poor description makes a buyer think twice before procuring this vehicle. Why The Company haded over the responsibility of reviewing The Thar to a mediocre person with no experience describing or reviewing a vehicle. Thanks to the guy for poor demo.
