PREPPING HAY FIELDS FOR SUMMER

- One of the most important things to do when the fields are dry enough in the summer is getting all of the rocks off of the hay fields. Otherwise, the haybine will hit them and then we have bent and broken knives. Picking rocks saves time in the long run.

Back in the seventies when I was a teenager my father actually bought Forks that were made for picking stones I don't know if they're made today but that's something you could look into too.
Rock farming at its finest, now everyone knows where them fancy walls come from.
One way you can warm hands in the field is to use the heat from the exhaust outlet, works really well by rubbing hands together,the downside is the smell of exhaust fumes on you but it usually goes away and it’s worth it to get some warmth if it’s getting too cold.
Two seasons ago I was rock picking and found a styrofoam rock right in the middle of our field lol

This somehow gets a lot more entertaining than you would think. Nothing sucks the heat out of your hands like
trying to rock a rock out of the cold sticky dirt.

Ya, here in Kansas depending on what you call big, I call a big field around 150 to 200 acers, there are fields that are a full section and are around 500 acers, those field suck to plant because the take forever.
Am a rancher l cows and steers but love watching your videos about dairy cows your awesome 😍

We usually pick rocks right after seeding and each spring i find new rocks by dragging a harrow. I hear when i hit something. I also stop to pick roks after i hit them with the mower because it's easier to find them when you know where to look.

For the hand tools that go in the field, I suggest you get a pink can of spray paint to make finding them easier.
You could hook a trailer up to that quad. You are the best, your videos are very funny. Thanks for sharing them with us.
Ahhhhhh yes picking rocks ohhh so much fun would strongly recommend using a spade to dig out those big rocks you have a lot more (pry power) to get those rocks out

Oh the rock picking days we used our small tractor with flat piece of steel with chains on it sat on it seen a rock hopped off loaded it up. Fun days. Cousin is a landscaper said he'd pay for some of the rocks. Kinda shocked me...
Some of the local dairy farmers in southern Indiana are having to dump there milk because of the dairy doesn't need it says demand is down because of limitations the stores have put on

I live up by Rochester in a farm town and I was blessed to live next to the biggest field in the county. It's crazy how a 120 acre field is a small field compared to out west.

The soon to be famous rock picking video in progress? Two tips for you: Paint the crowbar bright orange or yellow, and it will show up easily in a field if you manage to leave it behind. And get some bungeecords to fasten the stone bin. You will save yourself a lot of hassle. A showel may be a good idea for those large rocks? Keep up the good work.
I hated picking rocks on the farm but the masons liked coming to get them for fire places and stone fronts one houses I LOVE YOUR DOG LABS ARE THE BEST I TRAIN THEM FOR HUNTING MINE IS A YELLOW LAD NAMED JENNY

Instead of using your fingers to pick stones. A good tool would be an army trenching shovel, there small, fold up. Some have pick on the back for those ones that are hard to dig up. You can find them on Ebay or Amazon.

Our fields were much smaller, with more rock than dirt. We grew decent tobacco though.
Great video. Them rocks will most definitely give you a work out. I love doing no equipment weight lifting. I say it’s the poor mans way to work out. Lol and I for sure qualify as a poor man. Keep up the great work and God bless.

We always go over the fields with a land roller half full of concrete after we seed alfalfa, it pushes rocks the size of a basketball into the ground.

I've picked many many trailer loads of rocks off newly cleared land. My back reminds me every now and again. One of my first purchases was a rock picker, but they never get them all especially the buried ones.
I was picking rocks into a loader bucket looked down and found an arrow head.. I also plowed a future lawn for a neighbor and found a very nice arrow head..
Winter does a marvelous job of lifting rocks...
quarantine can be good after all for farmers at least😂
