Harry Chapin - Circle

  • "All my life's a circle;
    Sunrise and sundown;
    Moon rolls thru the nighttime;
    Till the daybreak comes around.
    All my life's a circle;
    But I can't tell you why;
    Season's spinning round again;
    The years keep rollin' by.
    It seems like I've been here before;
    I can't remember when;
    But I have this funny feeling;
    That we'll all be together again.
    No straight lines make up my life;
    And all my roads have bends;
    There's no clear-cut beginnings;
    And so far no dead-ends.
    Chorus:
    I found you a thousand times;
    I guess you done the same;
    But then we lose each other;
    It's like a children's game;
    As I find you here again;
    A thought runs through my mind;
    Our love is like a circle;
    Let's go 'round one more time.
    Chorus "

    Not sure if anyone will read this. But I grew up listening to Harry Chapin with my grandmother. (This album in particular) it is what made me want to pursue a career in music. Harry Chapin is my grandmother's absolute favorite. We are losing her in hospice right now and she is in a coma. I pulled out my guitar and sang this for her one last time like she always loved. (She used to join in and add the little talking bits from this live version) it's safe to say I didn't make it far into the song. Once I hit the line "I've got a funny feeling we will all be together again" I lost it. A beautiful song. One that made me the man I am. And currently this song is playing on repeat in my grandmother's hospital room while she passes. Thank you Harry. For the memories. ❤

    We used to go see Harry every summer at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York. We would also travel anywhere we could to see his performances. When you saw Harry on stage, it wasn't like you were going to see a concert, it was more like you were enjoying a fun evening of music wih a friend. Harry's total dedication to the World Hunger Organization has blessed countless thousands (millions?) of people. You could find him wandering the halls of Congress on a regular basis petitioning for aid for the weary and downtrodden. Harry was an everyman with a heart and sentiment that will traverse across generations to come. To say any particular Chapin song is my "favorite" would depend entirely on which one I am listening to at the time. So much of his music causes one to go "Oooooo.... I love this song!". We miss you terribly Harry. Rest in Peace brother.

    Harry Chapin's legacy is alive and well. I'm 77 years old and didn't even learn about his music until a couple of weeks ago when I listened to Georgie Wilson's radio show on CFUV - she knows all the music going back decades. I was too busy raising four teenagers and teaching school during the 70s and 80s so missed out on a lot of the music that he sings about in "Remember When the Music" ... what a superhuman being he was - his spirit inspires the best in us even forty years after he left the planet. He knew love - how to receive and how to give.

I grew up listening to Harry, Jim Croce, Judy Collins, the Mama's & the Papas, Peter, Paul, & Mary, etc. (my parents were 70's "freaks" [kinda like hippies, but different lol]), and Harry has always had a special place in my heart. Plus, this song always struck me as a perfect Wiccan/Pagan anthem (if you know anything about Wicca, listen to this song, and it kinda jumps out at ya) It actually might be more like a helix or double-helix, so the circles get harder to tell apart

    Harry Chapin
    One Of The Greatest Men On Earth
    December 7, 1942 - July 16, 1981
    While waiting outside of Colden Auditorium at Queens College, after a canceled concert, I met and had a few words with the man who was to have given the concert. In my eyes, one of the greatest men on Earth.
    He was a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger. He was the co-founder of World Hunger Year or WHY, now known as WhyHunger, a wonderful and efficient non-profit that is still helping feed hungry people today. He was instrumental in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977.
    He was a man that was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award in the United States, the Congressional Gold Medal. He was a man who performed benefit concerts for hundreds of worthy organizations during his career. He was a man who raised more than 3,000,000 USD for those in need in the last six years of his life. He was a man that donated to charitable causes an estimated 33% of the revenues from his indefatigable schedule of 200 plus concerts performed each year.
    Besides his tireless humanitarian work, he was an accomplished and creative renaissance man that during his life was nominated for the following illustrious awards: Oscar, Grammy, Peabody, Emmy, and Tony.
    He was a man that I was lucky enough to have seen in concert a handful of times between 1975 and 1980. He is a man that I still miss today.
    His name was Harry Chapin.

    I loved Harry Chapin! I got to shake his hand in November of 1979 after a concert at Huntington High School--I think it was there and then--and I got to tell him my favorite song I liked by him--it was his too-and I even got to take his picture twice--with my Minolta X-G1=and to take Tom Chapin's picture--as well as Harry Chapin's Father to boot! Harry was funny, and the joke he made as we were waiting to get in on a chilly Wed nite was classic,

    One of my all-time favorite songs. If there's music at my funeral one day, I want this song to be part of it.
    Also, I used to teach American Sign Language and this one was a favorite. It's beautiful and fun and the whole class could come along with the refrain.
    Miss ya, Harry, but your stuff still lives. :)

    Closing in on 70, currently in great health but still aware that I will not be around forever. So I am updating my will and writing my service. Funerals are normally a time for family and friends to have to speak, but I think it should be a time to hear words from the guy in the box. These words will be worked into the service somewhere-
    "Old friends, they mean much more to me than the new friends,
    Cause they can see where you are,
    and they know where you've been"

    First of all, I want to echo all of your sentiments to one of the great artists of our time. I had the privilege of seeing Harry live back in 1977 at Loras College in Dubuque, IA., and what a thrill! Harry Chapin playing at this small college in Iowa... He was such an amazing and gifted talent with so much love to give. And give he did... we miss you Harry!

    I saw Harry Chapin every summer at the Ontario Place forum in Toronto. I was always the highlight of the Summer. My friends thought I was nuts. Saw his last show at the O'Keefe Centre just before he past. I remember he was in the lobby promoting one of his causes. I made a small donation and he thanked me as I passed. I was really sad when I heard what had happened in New York. Glad I got to see him so many times live.
