Have you thought about texturing and pain g the garage? I did mine 20 years ago and it looks so much better. Not expensive or hard to do. I love my Hobie kayaks 👍

Yes. We do plan on some point at finishing out the garage. We have a 3 bay garage and the 3rd bay was just studs. We insulated it and put up drywall already but still need to tape the seams, etc. However, the rest is lower priority as we want to finish out our basement first. We will get to it at some point though.

Rough Riders . Basement and a 3 car garage....I’m jealous! I live in Dallas and I wish we had a basement.

@@opichocal Yep. I lived in Austin for 15 years...8" of top soil and then you hit solid rock. Love having a basement and bigger garage now...also love not fighting with mosquitoes all summer too.

May I ask how far the brackets extend from the wall when mounted?

Hey just watched your video, I am having the same issue with the dry wall. Did you use a toggle bolt on each hole or just the top hole for each holder? thank you.

Yes. I had plenty so I just went ahead and used one on each mounting hole for each rack. It's overkill but I had them so might as well use them.

How do you determine how far down from the ceiling to install the hooks? My kayak is 29 inches wide. Does this mean I place the first bracket's hole at the 29 inch mark? Or the elbow of the bracket at the 29 inch mark?

Great question, probably should have covered that in the video. I think most people mount them low so they don't have to lift the kayak over their head to place it in the rack. However, if like me, you are trying to mount them high towards the ceiling, you need to leave yourself some wiggle room to get the kayak to clear the lower bracket arms. Therefore, I would suggest you take the width of your kayak + the bracket arms and then add at least a few inches so you have more room than you need. I installed a hoist system in conjunction with this so I can easily hoist the kayak up and into the bracket but I also mounted the brackets really high so it would be hard to manually lift the kayak in place. Hope that helps. In my case, I have about 36" from the tip of the lower bracket arm to the ceiling.

How did you figure out the spacing for the brackets?

I was looking for wall studs but they were not located in the ideal positions. I wanted them about a 1/3 of the way in so the weight was evenly distributed. Therefore, I opted for the snap toggle bolts through the drywall instead of going into studs. If going into drywall, they provide regular anchors but personally I would not use those, the snap toggles hold way more weight. I was literally hanging on that one bracket with the bracket taking my entire weight (168lbs).

@@RoughRidersTV I have an unfinished garage so I am going to have to go with what I have with the studs. I have the same brand and re-read the directions ten times. The picture on the back does not appear to reflect 35% they say on the front. I am going to try and get it to 1/3 the best I can. Thanks for your help!

@@kjhappykampers6305 I think it may also want to look at your kayak to see where you can best balance the weight. I have a delta kayak and if I were storing that on the racks, I would want the supports to line up with the bulk heads in the kayak since that is the strongest point on the kayak. However, the bulk heads are not evenly spaced 1/3 of the way. However, with my wife's pungo, there is only 1 bulkhead and its a foam block that does not add any structural rigidity. Therefore, just spreading the weight evenly works best for that design.
