- Millionaire Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen appeared out-of-touch when asked about inflation under President Joe Biden - insisting she goes to the grocery store “every week” and isn’t shocked by the skyrocketing prices.
Yellen was quick to shoot down a question about grocery prices, which are up 20% from before the Covid-19 pandemic, during an interview with Yahoo Finance’s Jennifer Schonberger on Monday.
“Have you been to the grocery store lately?” Schonberger asked Yellen in the interview.
“I sure have - I go every week,” Yellen replied.
“It’s sticker shock isn’t it? Just when you look at shipping costs, those have come down, global food commodity prices have also come down, but food prices still remain high. Should the US invest in agriculture to boost the food supply in this country?” Schonberger asked.
Yellen, who is worth an estimated $20 million, began to reply “No” before Schonberger even finished her question.
“I think largely it reflects cost increases, including labor cost increases that grocery firms have experienced, although there may be some increases in margins,” Yellen continued.

There was not skyrocketing food prices in 2020. So the fix is easy.
Did you hear about the pandemic? Supply chain shortages caused prices to go up. Once inflation came down (nearly 3% currently) businesses decided not to lower cost because Americans proved to them they would pay more and continue to do so

I’m no Econ expert although I did earn an Accounting certificate before I got degrees in Computer Science and math. But income equals revenues minus expenses, in general. An increase in expenses - say salaries increase - puts upwards pressure on pricing to increase revenues to simply keep income the same. So it was obvious that when governors such as Gavin Newsom raised minimum wages it would cause immediate inflation. A grade school child could figure that out.

I went out yesterday. I got a burger, shrimp wrap, 2 regular beers and the bill was $55. Not horrible, but with a tip it went over $65+. Thats a lot forna quick lunch for 2 imo. Thats why nobody goes out randomly anymore.

She's thinking about the issue too abstractly. It's a hard resource issue. Abstracting the problem into money terms and economic jargon just confuses and overcomplcates the issue. It's a how much produce are we producing annually relative to the annual demand problem. Once you you identify that, then you can start looking at export data, logistics issues, and other details to determine if the current price of groceries represents the realities of production and distribution.
If it doesn't, then should congress or other state legislative bodies make a public policy issue out if this.
If it does, can technological development in the ag sector improve it, if so, should the government offer research grants to develop it?
