  • This is probably the best nights sleep Stanley has had since getting him over a month ago! If this is the best I'm sure you can imagine how the other nights went .. This video was filmed between the hours of 3am to 8am so only 5 hours. Nobody gets sleep in our house anymore .. But, he slept for a good few hours so we're getting there :)

Aww, I feel for your whole household! It's a difficult time but it seems you are moving toward a goal. The way he goes back to his bedding and toys in between crying sessions you can tell he is learning to comfort himself and that ability will serve him well as an adult. Hang in there guys! You will soon have a fully potty trained pup who snores happily through the night in a pile with his brothers! Love to all! 💕🐾

Poor baby! He's lonesome, he wants to be with you & Pablo & Winston! 🥰 My puggie used to cry like Stanley when she was a baby, but not as long or in such a haunting manner! It's really not good for him to be in such a prolonged state of distress every night (not good for the humans either!) 😢 Our solution was to put a gated area in the bedroom for her and we let her out in the backyard every 3 hrs., even at night. (Yes, it's like having a real baby!) After a couple of months, she was completely house-broken. We sleep with her in bed now with no crying or "accidents" (unless she's sick). It's been like that for the past 10 years! Good luck with Stanley, he's a good potato! 💕🐶

  • @radiclelife
    @radiclelife Před 4 lety +5

Puppies need boundaries and to learn that it’s ok to be alone. Yes it’s sad, but he needs it to be an independent dog in the future. It’s not like they just leave Stan all day with no contact. This isn’t wrong of them and letting Stanley sleep in their bed could lead to other problems down the road as well.
Just like with babies and toddlers, mothers can’t always run to their babies when they cry either.

    @user-ey2im5cx7z Před 4 lety +10

For everyone who is saying he shouldn’t be sleeping alone you have to think about it; Stanley is still a puppy and he has yet to be able to control his bladder, therefore he could “go” on the carpet which he has “went” on the kitchen floor if you’ve seen a video of Karl cleaning up after Stan . Second puppy’s teeth since they are still little and Karl can’t stay up all night to see if Stan is chewing up things he isn’t supposed to, for example puppy’s could chew couches, controllers or batteries which it isn’t good for dogs to consume any of that, so please understand that they care about him but can’t have him going on the carpet and chewing all over things. Thank you and I hope you all understand, also I am not trying to come after people, but some people may not understand the worries and struggles of having dogs and believe me I do, I have 3 dogs who can be trouble at times but they are grown and are behaving most of the time, so I hope you all understand and have a good day :)

This was so sad I couldn't watch it all the way through. Remember he's only a baby and he has the support of Pablo, Winston & yourself throughout the day and then is completely shut off from everybody for a long period of time at night, he is losing his safety blanket. Unfortunately, a lot of dog owners become numb to the sound of their dogs in distress when they separate them like this because they're so used to hearing it.

CE C - yeah I had to fast forward to the part where he saw his little friends and got happy 🙈 it’s difficult to kno what to do for the best, you wanna create boundaries for them but don’t want them to be distressed. I get what you’re saying, he’s used to having his human and doggy pals constantly through the day, so must be rough for him alone at night ☹️ poor baby.

The only way to stop him shaking was to keep him close. All our pugs since I always slept in our bedroom. I have a huge basket under our bed were they sleep or they sleep with us.

So I pack her homemade food in plastic jars, put the jars in a lunch sack, THEN I hide the sack somewhere in the house.......And for her kibble, it must be tossed so she can catch it as if playing a game & learning a trick. They talk about why in another video and basically the other pugs don't want to be gated in and the puppy tries to eat all the electronics and if he sleeps upstairs he'll try to go back down the stairs which he doesn't have the coordination for yet.
But from experience there are some behaviors you just have to let them work through. My pets went through overnight behaviors every once in a while, the most recent being when we had to put one down and the remaining one was in mourning. Sure I would comfort him but at some point I have to sleep too and responding to his cries at all hours was encouraging the behavior. It sucks though and it made for some very long days.

To those who said this sweet video disturbs them...
Karl has already, and very successfully I might add, been a loving daddy, buddy and educator to his other wonderful puglets. There is absolutely no cruelty going on here, just puggy puppy bedtime in an incredibly clean and welcoming environment. Have you heard all the fussing and racket a little puppy makes when his own Mama is weaning or using disciplinary action on him?... FAR more drama than this. Pups in the wild (as well as domesticated ones) learn proper specific responses from a parent to any given circumstance - for it's own safety and that of the group. For example, when it's time to eat, play or lay quietly. And any pet is a far happier and more self-assured member of the family when he knows and understands the rules and routine of his family. Soon Stanley will have the physical and emotional maturity to learn and adapt to "bedtime" (quiet time) rules. And as far as the crate training concerns, again nothing is amiss here. Best left at first to daytime training sessions when you are there in person to give rewards, block off specific training times and be attentive to any "accidents." Be fair. These heartwarming videos are posted for a family to share the cuteness overload, not to pick them apart looking for imperfections. Thank you for sharing your fur-babies with us all! Happy holidays!

I got a pug a month ago who is also called Stanley. He's nearly 13 weeks now. Playing your videos gets him a bit confused :D
Potty training has been tough as he has a habit of trying to eat his own poo (he's well fed despite this). As a result he sleeps in a pen in the bedroom. I automatically wake when he does which is useful as I can grab him and take him down for a poo before he goes, but not so great as i get around 3-4 hours sleep an night! Still... it's worth it. Hopefully he will grow out of this so I can return to the world of the living.
Thanks for your video's. They have been very helpful in understanding pugs and how to make sure he is well cared for.

I saw the video yesterday but I was too upset by some of the comments left, no matter how well intending. The comment by Brianna C is the best comment I've read and she's certainly more patient than I feel about some of the comments people have left. I feel so bad for Karl and Chelsea. They love their dogs and are really trying to do the best within reasonable means. Brianna C has explained why this might be the best way to handle this period where Stanley might have accidents upstairs at night, chew up stuff and they obviously can't stand awake and watch Stanley.
Karl and Chelsea are obviously good Pug parents and put a lot of thought and care into how they handle Pablo, Winston and Stanley. I'd hate for Karl to begin to worry about our reactions every time he uploads a video. I'm not unaffected by Stanley's cries but I watched the previous video (and I read Brianna C's comment) and I understand why they do this. They aren't harming Stanley and Stanley has to learn as others have also commented in response to some of the outrage/concern.
Side note: Watching this from my country; Denmark, I assume that there aren't just personal differences in what we think is best for dogs but also cultural differences. I've seen some really ugly "debates" on Danish forums about crate use at all! While in other cultures, it seems like crate training is now considered the most obvious and acceptable thing.

My pug brother slept with my parents from day 1. And he didn't even like me studying in another room in the house. He was always near me or on my lap. We taught him to go potty on towels in my parents' washroom as it was too cold and there was too much snow to take him outside at night. It ended up working extremely well. He would let us know that he needed to go and we would take him to the washroom. Later on when the cold passed and he grew a little bit he would tell us it's time for pee pee and poo poo and we would take him out during the night as well. He was toilet trained really quickly. By six months I think he had the hang of it. I miss my brother so much..... We put him down this year. It is empty without him. Just empty.

As you know I love pugs dearly and it would break my heart if something happened to Pablo, Winston and Stanley. In the meantime please be patient with Stanley and try to get some sleep ok ❤ you Pablo, Winston and Stanley

Question for Carl how the hell can you leave Stanley to get so distressed at night? How can you sleep through that? It would pull on my heartstring listening to him, plus I'd be very worried about him waking the neighbours.
You stated in your video Stanley is asleep all night long when you've slept with him. Doesn't it prove he needs his family to feel secure and happy. Dog's when satisfied and happy sleep. If you don't want him to sleep with you. Then put Winston, Pablo and Stanley in the kitchen together and see what happens and film that. I'd bet you'd see a very different film. Stanley needs his grumble while young he needs the security of his family. When you have one dog its totally different to having three.

Winston reminds of that one friend that always brings snacks (because he is always having a toy in his mouth)😂
Also poor Stanley im sure i wouldn’t succeed in being consistent when it comes to him sleeping separately.
I wonder what is the boys reactions to Stanley’s crying all night😦

I agree---although I do understand their reasoning, I think it must be tempered with the idea that CLEARLY Stanley is going through more than the normal amount of distress all thru the night....I dunno, I would think it would make for a more Pablo personality as an adult, rather than a Winston if that makes sense. No diss to the parents, just an observation from afar.....

I must also say that my Pug has never pottied in my bed. When she was very little I took her out every 3 hours, to get a drink of water and see if she had to wee. At 10 weeks she was going 6 hours without weeing at night. She's 4 months now and easily goes 8 hours thru the night. Not a single accident. SO! I think I might be lucky AND of course, our Couple have THREE Pugs to deal with!

Oh, Gosh I would not go without a Baby Monitor too! He sounds so human!! Here, I'll just tuck him in my oversized shirt and cuddle him. He is too young, and he can't see the brothers so feeling really left out. They should all be in separate kennels to see each other for company and anti anxiety therapy!!!

I am doing this same method with our next puppy. I havent had a puppy in 13 years. When i was 15ish we had our pug pickles but my step dad was abusive towards her so she slept with me from day 1. Im really nervous as an adult if i can stand the crying to teach the puppy to be ok because its going to give me sad memories.

If you can find a wind-up alarm clock put that in the bed under the blanket with him. The constant ticking is like the Mother's heartbeat and is soothing to them. Of course, make sure the alarm is not set.

As a pug mom of 4 i can only tell you what i would do. Pugs have different issues just like people. I would put a kennel near where the others sleep. Put him in and close the door. Maybe if Stanley can see them he will be ok. It will also save your carpet from a mess. The other thing is to put winston or pablo or both in with stanley. Its so hard to hear him cry because he is lonely. Im a bad mom i would have put him in the bed with me. Lol. Im a pug spoiler. I say keep the grumble together! !!!!!!!

    • @LucindaPug

Especially since pugs are high anxiety dogs and shouldn’t be left alone. I got an octagonal little pen for my puppy and put him in that with his bed, water, pee pad and a couple of toys in my room so he knew I was there but still learnt.

Karl I don't understand why you don't put him in the crate? All my dogs have been crated overnight since the day I got them and none of them have ever done this. I have a machine that makes heartbeat noises and I put that by the crate when they were small. Dogs like to sleep in dens and Stanley having so much open space is not helping his comfort. When I had 2 big dogs the crates were in the bedroom next to mine cuz they didn't fit in my room but with the smaller breed dogs the crate is in my bedroom. Also I get that you probably need the light for filming but the sleeping area should be dark like a tomb so the light doesn't wake him up. Ditch the radio there is too much variance in noise level and get a white noise machine and put the crate in your bedroom.

WAY back in the day, when we got a new puppy, my Mom would wrap an alarm clock (with the alarm turned off) in a blanket and put it under where the puppy slept. Supposedly the tick/tock would "mimic" a heartbeat. I remember it working....but now you'd be hard put to find such a clock.

Haha that first noise! Our pug puppy Zuko (now 5 months) used to make exactly the same noise, we called it his elephant impression. He also did a decent dolphin impression.
Stanley’s second howl sounds like an angry cat 🤣🤣🤣

There are 2 ways for this or mayby 3 ways
Way 1 put the crate next to the staircase or next to the bed
Way 2 put winston with him so he has company
Way 3 the very touch love earplugs in when sleaping and just ignore the hell out of it

I've never heard a dog make that sound ever. My pug when he had heart failure would have seizures that sounded kind of like that, but it sounded like someone had dropped a baby or was trying to kill someone. It was the worst sound ever. We ended up pulling our puppy's crate in our room covering it with a blanket and playing heartbeat sounds on my phone until he got over sleeping at night. The other option is to get a toy that has a heartbeat. I got my puppy a stuffed dog with a thing inside that made a heartbeat sound and made it vibrate like breathing and he slept with it until he was four months old then he just started to toss it around the house.

Scrolling down to the comments was a mistake lol. What you guys fail to realize as it doesnt matter this is just a puppy. You care because it's small and cute. Imagine a giant pitbull doing this. I've dealt with this exact situation and she made herself bleed from destroying the house when her parents left to go get ice cream at the gas station... dogs must learn to be alone AND be kept in a safe area where they dont hurt themselves. Puppies whine.. like literally all the time
