    literally tysm for bringing up the ED stuff i swear the way leeknow and changbin constantly emphasize how important eating is not skipping meals being healthy and all of that makes me feel better since they workout and they’re more interested in taking care of themselves the right way they educate themselves but for the rest of skz they’re just….

      It’s such an important topic to discuss. They really need to be more educated on the impact of these types of words. Not only that but I just think they (all idols) are just not educated enough on nutrition. I know it might be better than how it used to be but it’s still a massive problem and it’s so sad to see ❤️

    ive been into kpop for like??? over 13 years now and honestly the way idols talk about food has actually improved, frighteningly enough. nutritional education in s korea seems to be genuinely abysmal because idols are taught (as well as the general public) that the goal is to be as small as possible, regardless of how you get there. i feel bad that they dont seem to have people on their side telling them to eat more regularly, especially given how active they all are. hopefully the boys are all eating more

      @apollo-iy8hy Před 2 lety +26

      i was actually pretty pleased when in a recent vlive lee know said he gave up on starving himself through harsh diets, honestly a lot of idols really dont get to that point for a long time, if they ever do, so im glad i dont have to worry as much about him anymore.

      I think eating behaviours as a whole (around the world) have become better because of education. But there is still an alarming number of people not just among idols, not just within Korea but world wide who are struggling with negative body image and disordered eating behaviours. It’s so saddening and I wish I could help somehow 😭

      @@melaniereacts oh yeah for sure ! i totally agree with you, things are definitely getting better for a lot of people (especially since the stick thin fad of the 90s and 00s passed in some places) but seeing these poor idols, lots of whom are teens or young adults, talk candidly about like, not having rice or bread for weeks to lose weight is like… just so sad because they are basically athletes and fundamentally need to eat way more than they are to support their bodies through promotions and hours of dance practice and yet they don’t because of a lack of education on what their bodies need and the insane pressures of being a celebrity when like, 4k cameras exist (not to mention, stylists in kpop genuinely seem to not know what to do with someone whose body type doesn’t fit the ‘typical’ idol mold) it really is an awful shame to hear stuff like this from the mouths of people that we care about 😓😵‍💫

    Thank you for speaking so candidly and sincerely about the lack of good nutritional practices in the Kpop industry
    It's not about blaming the idols who are a product of their culture and environment, where literally everything but above all their looks are scrutinized daily as a part of their occupation
    I'm glad some members have adopted more healthy mindsets around food but I just hope the industry overall can be more educated on this topic since it's relevant to every single person working in it
    It's yet another example of the failings of a system that exploits impressionable youth for entertainment

    • @melaniereacts
      @melaniereacts  Před 2 lety +14

      Exactly right! It’s not their faults at all. When you are surrounded by an environment that promotes weight loss (not only idols but Korea as a country) then you become accustomed to that way of living. But Omg it is so damaging! Their words carry a lot of weight and I don’t think they realise how badly it can influence someone. I legitimately want to try and get a job in one of these companies to help them with this area. I just feel like sadly the education and support isn’t there!

    i 100% agree with you on the topic you discussed in this video, i've been crying about them needing a nutritionist for so damn long, but in one way you can't even fault them because they genuinely are probably clueless about how harmful it is not only to them but saying it to the public/their fans.
    It really is just a manifested mindset they were conditioned into, because like you said, it isn't just them but the entire industry at fault who restrict their meals from the very beginning until the idols themselves just grow hyper aware of every slight 'change' in their appearance and criticize every single angle of them as if they aren't real people until they unconsciously start doing it themselves and think it's a good thing. The other side of that, is that idols also tend to be scrutinized if they do eat well/gain a healthy amount of weight since many of them start working out--and it almost becomes this thing of criticisms disguised under 'playful banter' not only by companies and some fans but also some members which also really just bothers me. i get there's no ill intent behind it and the members all love each other dearly, but man, if they look great and not at all unhealthy, why comment on it at all? In front of a camera especially. I also just doubt that those comments also leave the object of the jokes actually unfazed, too.
    Hopefully companies start integrating actual professionals for meal planning/advice bc it's just so sad sigh :/

    Felix had ed in the past, I hope he recovers or has recovered from it. He opened up about it earlier in 5th of January 2021 on bubble but some people became mad at him and attacked him which is sad and used it against him, he posted an apology saying he'll do better for STAY which makes me sad because he did nothing wrong, he just wanted to talk about his struggles with fans but they dragged him for it. Felix is to kind for this world 😔

When I recovered I went on to study nutritional therapy and Nutritional Psychology and now work with people who suffer from ED’s. In terms of weight loss, there are healthier and EASIER ways to achieve what they want to achieve without having to starve themselves but they just do not have that knowledge yet. • @melaniereacts
      @melaniereacts  Před 2 lety +5

      I just don’t think the knowledge is there at all. They don’t realise the impact they are having on others because it’s sooooo normalised in their environment. Everyone diets? Reducing meals is “the norm” the don’t know any different. They understand the extremes are not healthy, but I don’t believe they think skipping meals here and there is a problem. But irregular meal timing is so harmful for someone who is under immense stress a lot of the time. They are go go go from morning to night, schedule after schedule, not enough sleep, the body is more than likely always in the fight or flight mode. I hope that’s not the case but you never know.

    I think Felix is not bragging but just telling what he did cuz he wanted to share with STAY.
    He is being honest. It is common for celebs who are honest and share with fans to talk about that here in Korea.
    So it doesn't bother me much(I mean as a Korean who has seen lots of idols and celebs' diet,
    plus, Felix ate one meal (and I am sure he drank water) a day at least just temporarily. That is not a horrible case. I think.That is why.)
    unless he is sick and we all know it is just temporary thing for only for special events.
    If he has to think about everyone including the young who has different opinion whenever he talks, then he can't say anything freely.
    so I think in his case, since it is not a horrible case(don't be too sensitive and overreacted), it is not wrong for him to share the story with STAY.

    The food things is actually slowly getting better but I feel like there's still that mindset that "diet" means starving yourself, which it is not actually. I'm pretty sure there's nutritionists that would agree that diet is eating healthy, regularly, moderately and lessening food only to a small percent yet still eating 3 meals with healthy snack times. They also got this belief that eating could affect their performance (voice mostly) or visuals. I hate it but it's kinda became part of their Industry's belief and many idols actually do believe that, not knowing any better, it doesn't help that idols visuals and physique are criticized a lot, a little bit of weight gain can get idols fat-shamed, they have this ideal standards. It's all so old-style/old beliefs. Also I'm pretty sure the boys just eat a whole lot after they perform/record...they mentioned it sometimes.

    The harmful diet culture talk is so pervasive in the kpop industry and amongst idols. I always feel torn on this issue as someone who's also struggled with an ED since my early teens. I am very certain that no idol has bad intentions when they make those types of comments and broadcasts them to their fans. However, I also do think that they have a responsibility towards their audience. Because a large chunk of it is very young and impressionable. Honestly, I just feel sad for all parties involved here. The idols for being pushed into such an unhealthy mindset by the harmful industry standards and the fans who may end up getting negatively impacted by their words. It’s definitely not their fault, it’s the industry that they are brought up in. I understand why they think they need to skip meals for days before a shoot, but they are just lacking key education around how to achieve what they want without having to be nutrient deprived. It’s also a Korean cultural thing. The beauty standards are out of control and being super skinny is promoted wether you are an idol or just a “regular” person. I really wish I could get a job in the industry to help these idols with healthy practices and different strategies that will keep them fit and healthy whilst achieving whatever their goal is ❤️

    I also just feel for them. I used to also eat one meal a day for years just to lose weight but each meal I ate was unhealthy and bad for me. I've now learned to eat much more regularly but just eat healthier and better and I've lost way more weight being healthy than I was when I was trying unhealthy ways to look skinny. On top of that, I feel a lot more confident and better mentally, not constantly analyzing what I see in the mirror. Idk, I know it's the industry and the culture talking but it still bugs me whenever I see them talking about skipping meals and/or other damaging diets because they generally have a pretty young audience that could get easily influenced, especially people from Korea and around there where the pressure is usually a lot higher than in the western world. Not that it doesn't happen of course, but it's becoming more accepted.

    Can you watch Weekly Idol with Stray Kids?)
    I don't think it's because they don't know, it feels like there's one rule in this industry: if you want to look better, don't eat.
    Maybe I will express a non-polar opinion here, but other things influenced me.
    Sometimes they want to show us in different shows or vlogs how good and how much they eat. I had a period when I also ate quite a lot, and I said to myself, well, the guys look cool and also eat normally. But! We must always be aware that they have a lot of physical activity, we see only part of the picture, and tomorrow they can sit on a serious diet. Also, now at 28 my metabolism is far from the same as it was at their age. And then I realized that I was not able to diet. So if you want to eat something very sweet or a huge bowl of ramen, consider this) You just need to always think about what will be best for you personally.

    You seems right to me but my mind is confused about fasting method and it's benefits which a lot of professionals and doctors accepted and recommended. Even someone (a scientist who I truly sorry to not remembering his name) won Nobel prize with otoliz theory which is an important part of fasting.

    • @melaniereacts
      @melaniereacts  Před 2 lety +4

      There is a difference between fasting and starving yourself. Fasting has been proven to be effective in the short term depending on the environment. The difference is this: these idols are starving themselves for days at a time. Eating 1 meal (if that) but trying to stay up with the insane schedule they have. Their body is not being fuelled and therefore can become nutrient deprived. Not only that but it can cause the body to fall into a certain level of stress response. When in the stress response your body cannot function optimally.
      When it comes to fasting, you are just giving your digestive system a break for a certain amount of hours. In this break the body can have a chance to rejuvenate and detox. If this is done when you are in a relaxed environment, able to calm the body and mind - then that’s great! Should this be done long term? No! I don’t believe so.
      These idols are hardly ever in a relaxing environment. They have schedule after schedule, practice after practice, they more than likely don’t get enough sleep - all factors which ALREADY is putting pressure on the body. They would need MORE FOOD than the average person. When you decrease your calories and put yourself under stress you are going to cause your digestive system to go into some degree of shutdown, you will not metabolise or calorie burn your food efficiently. You also release excess insulin and cortisol (stress chemicals). This is not an ideal thing to do for the type of environment they work in. It’s just not. They do not live a regular life and therefore I don’t believe they should be doing certain eating behaviours that others may be able to get away with.

    Yeah Korean diet culture is extremely toxic and especially for idols. Minho pretty recently talked about how he gave up starving for those extreme diets. And I’m glad members like Changbin and Seungmin always emphasize ppl needing to eat. In the two kids room Ep with Seungmin and Felix, Seungmin kept telling Felix that he needs to eat. Bc he talked about Felix staying late to practice and not eating with them. This stuff is sadly so prominent and I don’t think there’s a single kpop group who hasn’t dealt with it. I just hope ppl keep in mind that most idols break into the industry before they’re even old enough to drive, and that this is the result of the environment and that they don’t push the narrative that these idols are purposefully pushing these toxic narratives. They truly just don’t see it as we do from a western perspective bc that’s just so apart of the culture, and therefore it’s harder to break out of. I see stuff like this with so many groups and even tho it’s much better than it used to be there are def some harsh cases. Seongwha from Ateez in particular is one I see who’s rlly fallen victim to this diet culture. He talks so much about it and in general seongwha seems to be affected a lot by the culture around him. Like when he talked about feeling jealous when shopping with his mom bc of all the pretty clothes and how he couldn’t wear stuff like that. Or when he’s talking about his face being puffy or his weight or not wanting to eat too many snacks. There’s so many little moments and it sucks :/ but we can’t rlly do anything but hope it’ll be better in the future

    Never apologise for talking on a topic you care about and know about. I've been saying for a while the music industry should have specialist psychologists like sports now do, because it's such a unique environment. There's the double edged sword of constantly being under pressure to look your best and how you internalise that, but then also how your every action carries influence over a whole mass of people, even your insecurities. I think the culture is slowly improving, and SKZ seem to be improving too. There was a bit of a backlash when Chan said he was going to diet because he felt he'd put on weight and he ended up saying he was going to eat what he wanted but exercise more. And I've seen clips of Changbin and Lee Know stressing that you mustn't skip meals. It's hard because you never want to tell someone what to do with their body, but when they say worrying things I feel it does need to be raised in some way. Honestly I share your urge of wishing I could work in the industry to improve the mental health structures in place.

      It’s such a double edged sword, you’re so right! But there are ways to achieve what they want without having to take extreme measures. I love that they continue to remind stay to eat and be healthy but sometimes it seems some of them don’t take their own advice. Today I’m going to email every company and try to get a job working with one of them to help these idols 😂

    Well that's the thing ofc actual rational people don't want that. But there is a certain standard expected for Idols in Korea. Yes they're definitely moving forward and I'm sure many many people don't think like this anymore but there still are a lot that do that are very vocal about it online. If they don't look exactly like those people want them to, they're gonna start saying things like ''this idol isn't taking care of themselves, meaning their appearance, even tho that's their job, it's their job to look good for their fans, they're not doing their job, they're lazy or not disciplined, they should have chosen a different job if they can't even do that'' and so on and forth, tons of comments like that. I've seen it happen so many times. That's why some Idols probably feel the need to brag or rather share these things to ''make fans proud'' bc that's what they think will make us proud and what not. They have brainwashed a lot of Idols to think this way and it's really really scary.
    And it's not even just the industry, sk as a whole has really ridiculous beauty standards and they are hyperfocused on them. It's extremly normal and culturally accepted to comment on other peoples bodies and their weight and everything. It's to the point where people are forced to get plastic surgery in order to even get a job at all even if they wouldn't want to bc companies would rather only hire good looking people. And i'm not talking entertainment companies, i'm talking regular jobs.
    This is why Idols don't really see it the way us western people do. I really wish they'd be more aware of the influence they're having on other people here but I think their hyperfocusing on themselves and how it correlates to their job and not even thinking about it possibly affecting normal people, their fans. Bc in their heads that's their job and they're doing it to make us proud or to shows those haters that being and Idol is indeed the right job for them etc.
    this might be a mess but I think it's still understandable, it's 3am lol

      It’s true. But the thing is, eating disorders are a major problem world wide, not just among idols and not just within Korea. Negative body image, and disordered eating affects an alarming number of people. I kind of wish I took a breath before my little rant and address it as a whole, because it’s not the idols fault. It’s something that is VERY common and almost “normalised” in that industry. Even if it’s getting better, they still need the support system to help them understand what other HEALTHY options are to help them achieve what they want.
      Ahhhh I wish I could work in the kpop industry and help all these idols 😭😭
