    I was at the Voelvry Tour at the methodist church in Durban. That night is burned into my memory for the rest of my life. The vibe was like nothing I had ever experienced and don't think I ever will again. I feel very emotional when I think back to that time. It was amazing.

    Johannes topped himself because it dawned on him that he backed the wrong horse and he was smart enough to realise what was to come. He bailed whilst things were still okay. Good on you, Johnnie. You cashed in when the lights were still on. Today the majority of us would opt for Bles any day of the week.

    Years ago I saw a brilliant interview with the members just before they were off to the Netherlands, I think. (Possibly SABC morning show) Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Or where I might find it again?

    I as a german understand afrikaans very good, but what is it Bles Bridges said in that interview from 1988?

    • @EyeGodZA
      @EyeGodZA Před 7 lety +5

      He said that he doesn't need to pollute his volk's brains by singing about political information in his music; he just wants to sing about the beautiful things in life, because that will lead to a positive, productive volk that would hold purpose and meaning for others.

      Patrick Kelmer super cringey. I've been researching this era for a project, and looking at that interview in this video, it's hard not to think of him as a government stooge. They were waging a massive propaganda war, and they were losing. Bles doesn't even looked convinced by what he's saying himself; comes off like rehearsed lines.

    Whilst I appreciate what these guys did back then, I must be honest, I have yet to come across ANYTHING in Afrikaans music that can stand up to the writing and performing standards of a Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Springsteen, Dylon, Clapton, etc... Today it's even worse! If it's not Robbie Wessels singing about his nuts, it's some "doef-doef", Kaptein Span die Seile, langarm shit! It's inferior and monotonous! And I am NOT anti-Afrikaans at all - that's not the point here. I'm merely judging the music...

      I gotta agree with you.. Yet, there is some Afrikaans music that I personally consider worth listening to.. Have you heard Spoegwolf or maybe Fokofpolisiekar?

      Stop trolling ....you are missing the point!!! Voelvry was a rebellion.... the music was the vehicle...if you weren't there you would not understand.... do yourself a favor and have a listen to Johnny K from Jan Blohm then take it from there and educate yourself!

      Well, at least we didn't go around the world committing genocide then pretending that we were the good guys in history. I can judge English people on being less athletic, less principled in that it took you 300 years to stop fucking over the world. Every people has something that sets them apart, yours may be music, but your people never fought an entire Empire just to exist freely only to get thrown in concentration camps which your people consider justified.
      Maybe if you didn't kill of a third of my people for gold mines, we wouldn't be so musically stunted, but hey, you're politically stunted, so that's fine by me.
