  • Today will begin the Restoration/Conservation project for a Coleman 200J Lantern that I have at the ready in the event of power outages. Over 40 years old It has seen its fair share of abuse and will need an overhaul if it will last another 40 reliably. This project will use some test methods that will be analyzed in subsequent videos for durability.
The project as expected with start with disassembly, carefully as to not cause more damage than already exists. Penetrating oil is helpful. The old mantles are removed outdoors. During disassembly, account is taken as to rust and areas where plating is removed. The glass should be inspected for damage, and replaced if there is found to be any. The cleaning rod has a very delicate needle at the end that can be easily damaged during disassembly or cleaning, care should be taken.
Testing is conducted when the top pieces are removed for the pump and the valve. The valve assembly packing and the cleaner knob packing should not be unnecessarily opened. These tests are conducted before the valve assembly is removed from the lower canister. The pump may require oil for its test if not functioning.
The valve itself is loosened in the soft jaws of a vice. After which the canister can be flushed with clean Coleman fuel. Each piece can then be inspected, cleaned and polished as necessary.
The Canister is brought outside and taped up to cover any ports, and sprayed with paint stripper. Left for half an hour, Just touching with a metal brush removes the paint easily. Items are ready to be brought to the Bug ranch for Sand Blasting Powder coating and special high temp painting in the next episode.

Still have my father's Colman Lantern in hard shell case ready for the next power outage! Of course we supplement with modern LED lanterns, but the Coleman has served our family for over 48 years now and is still running strong. Loved the video!

Thanks, while we now have backup generators, the lamps are still on standby during hurricane season in several areas of the property.

Excellent walk through! Thank you! I found an old 220J to us for fishing, camping, and outages. This will definitely help in making sure mine is ready to use.

Good Job on the Video - Quick and to the point. You only need to turn your wrench the correct way, so it gets tighter on the nut as you apply force.

👍🥃☕🍷🍺🏆👍 Your channel is so interesting. My grandparents had similar lamp but it "disappeared" many years ago... P.S. Good to know that retro electronics and technics attracts so many viewers which means there is chance for other similar channels...

I'm in the middle of doing this to my 220J right now. Mine was also in really good shape for being made in 78 but wouldn't burn bright so she is getting a good cleaning. Great video and Thank you for making it. The vent is porcelain that's why paint remover didn't work. I never mess with the paint or porcelain. The scratches and chips give it character.

Hello great video - I am restoring a saved (old farm barn cleanup had these being thrown out) a 220J and a 220K. The generator is missing completely on the 220J and the 220K is missing the cleaning lever. Parts are not available - what do you suggest. Both are missing flint assy too - hope not all is lost.

Hey - I have a model 220J that has good pressure, but won't light. you can even see the gas pressing on the flame of my lighter. any thoughts why it wouldn't light?

Great and helpful video. What spray did you use to strip the paint. Looks like it worked like a charm?
