  • At the top end of Martin Guitar's Standard Series sits two incredible small body guitars - the Martin 000-42 and the Martin OM-42. The differences between these high end guitars are subtle. Like the similar 000-28 and OM-28, changes in bracing and scale length determine whether the guitar is classified as an OM or a 000 model with the body dimensions being exactly the same. The added ornamentation of the guitars along with high grade woods classify these are heirloom quality guitars but each is a joy to play in their own unique way. Chris and Cooper dive into the details to determine which one is right for you?

    For me the OM seemed to resonate better, have more of a sparkle to the top end and a bit more volume and for those reasons the OM gets my vote for choice. Nice playing btw.

    Good on you guys for mentioning the bracing difference! It’s not just the brace width tho, but also the position; it’s not the same bracing pattern. The OM has forward-shifted bracing, and the 000 has rear-shifted (not middle position) bracing. I think that, and the brace width, makes way more difference tonally than the scale length (altho that does have an audible effect that can be tested on any guitar, even a standard scale, as another commenter mentioned).

    This was a terrific show- I have watched you 2 for a long while but this answered all my questions . I’m a Lefty and from England, I have a OOO 42 and a OOO28 Modern Deluxe -so you have made my mind up - sell the 28 MD and order up a N OM 42. Coopers playing was stellar!

    Great demo, both guitars sound amazing. I preferred the OM. I also prefer the modern deluxe line with the VTS top and VTS Adi scalloped bracing. The modern deluxe series produces a Martin sound that can't be beat.

    Hey guys,
    Thanks for the education on these two models. Never knew there was a difference in thickness regarding the board braces. Both obviously sound fantastic, I love Martin guitars overall. I just prefer set necks over bolt on models, call me crazy. Cooper’s playing can also make an ok guitar sound fantastic as well 🤟

    Great playing as usual, but I really wanted to hear some fingerstyle on these. I guess I’ll just have to come in and play them myself. 😊

    Hey, cool, I can buy snowflake sticker "inlays" for my baby Martin! On a more serious note, both of these guitars sound amazing. My old ears actually prefer the OOO but I like the darker sound. Thanks for the demo.

    I’m a lefty. Thank goodness for Martin. I own a 000-16 Nylon, a 00-18, a 000-28 EC, a D-28, and a D-45. I’d love a 000-45. Definitely. Nice video. Thanks.

    Chris asked “What would the 000-42 sound like with 1/4” bracing?” Answer: 000-42 Modern Deluxe. I bought one BECAUSE of that 1/4” Addy bracing (and it’s VTS, at that!). Having the 1/4” bracing made all the difference to me.

  • @sbolfing
    @sbolfing Před rokem +2

    1/4" bracing and long scale vs 5/16" bracing and short scale. This is a great comparison!
    BTW: I think I read that in the 15 series, because it has 5/16" bracing, it's called "000" even with long-scale length. (And there were long-scale 000-18s in the mid-30s - after the OM had already come out!)

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic Před rokem +1

      I think you're right about the 000-15. However, the 000-18 has 1/4" bracing (but rear-shifted, instead of forward-shifted like an OM) and is still called a 000. But when people say the "only difference" is the scale length, it drives me nuts! The scale length is important for sure, but the bracing makes a huge deal.

  • @johnwbanjo

    • @CarlosCandidoMusic
      @CarlosCandidoMusic Před rokem +1

      The OM definitely sounded brighter and clearer, but better is suggestive. I think the type of music you play would help make that choice. Both sound great to my ears.. so I need both.

  • @johnoffutt898
    @johnoffutt898 Před 4 měsíci

    Awesome comparison of the two models. Why can't they put the same size 1/4 inch bracing on the 000-42?

  • @CarlosCandidoMusic
    @CarlosCandidoMusic Před rokem +1

    Personally.. I think the difference in the bracing of these two models, is to make it more discernable to the ear: if the bracing was reversed, they might sound very similar, hence the only differences would be the scale length and the pick-guard. Designing it to be different tonally, creates the need to have both, or at least, the semblance of having something different.
    Personally, I wouldn’t buy both of these in the same model (be it, 18, 28 or 42) but I’d totally get a 000-18 and an OM-28 to have that sonic variety.
    Thoughts?

  • @JesseDylanMusic
    @JesseDylanMusic Před rokem +2

    You guys should compare the OM-21 (Martin's cheapest standard OM) to an OM-42 or -41 or whatever is in stock! When you have stock, anyway... Theoretically, the OM-21 should have all the important stuff that the OM-42 (etc) has.

    • @bluegryp
      @bluegryp Před 5 měsíci

      I’ve owned an om-21 an om-28 and an om-42. While they should in theory sound the same, they are in reality, pretty different. With each upgrade you get a noticeable difference for the better in resonance and tone. Don’t understand why but it’s quite dramatic.

    Quick tip you can turn an OM into a short-scale OOO by putting a capo on the first fret and lowering the tuning a half step!

    • @Danonym495
      @Danonym495 Před rokem

      Thats what I do with my D 35. This demo was bs. To hear the diff between OM and 000 you have to play fingerstyle, needless to beat them like that. My 000 EC is very sensitive to air humidity, over 50% she sounds muddy.

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic Před rokem +6

      Putting a capo on it isn't going to change the bracing to rear-position or 5/16" though. OMs usually have 1/4" bracing, forward-position. 000s usually have 5/16" bracing, rear-position. You'll also be lowering the string tension and changing the pitch. :)

    Thanks for the video guys! I prefer the sound of 000 more (and more history behind the guitar(sound) too ;-). I play most of the time blues. I am classical educated, used to play on a classical guitar with nylon strings for many years, and for me the neck is important as well. Unfortunately they don't have the modified V-neck. I played these guitars a few years ago and I had troubles playing on it. In this price range you need to test them out yourself anyway before your purchase.
