Last week I made one of my two annual trips to what I consider to be one of the best places on earth for landscape photography, the Isle of Skye. Just in case you are unfamiliar with it, it's a small island located on the west coast of Scotland (UK).
WORKSHOPS: I always make a couple of trips to the Isle of Skye to run 5 day workshops. If it's something you fancy, you'll find all the info you need here: tinyurl.com/od7...
The temperature during this time of the year was mild, to say the least. The weather, on the other hand, was a little more challenging. It rained every day and the wind was really bad. Stormy at times too! This never worried us at all, it's just what you expect at this time of year. In fact, we used the rainy times to drive around the island and explore other areas. We found some amazing places, some we photographed, some we didn't. The ones we didn't are earmarked for future visits.
I get asked all the time why I venture to the Isle of Skye at wintry times... well that's a simple one to answer. Whilst the weather might not always be perfect, bad weather always brings clouds which in turn renders most of your pictures dramatic. Ok, so the low cloud can sometimes hinder the proceedings but the drama gained more than makes up for it.
Put your feet up, grab a coffee or something stronger, turn up the sound and enjoy my adventure.

Sky... I have been in many places in my life, but I have never lost anything precious during my travels. Except on Sky.... Part of my heart still wandering there somewhere. Well done Gary! Your video made me think again how Sky and the Outer Hebrides pushed me toward photography and for developing a view on things to spot the beauty in them and hold onto it. We have to go places so far remote to find something spectacular inside us, what we can take home forever.
It certainly is an amazing place. Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment 👍
After this video, I am sure that all the photos you take are not only amazing photos to enjoy, but it’s like a beautiful dream to live! It’s about that feeling when you see a photo and become a part of it... That’s amazingly magical! 👌
Thank you very much Muhammad, very kind again
Wow what a great place. And a photographer to do it justice
Very kind David, cheers 👍👍
GAry, big pictures with big music. There is only one word to describe this video; and that is with a great big "WOW"!
Thanks for the kind compliments 👍👍
The you tube channel gets better and better every week, fantastic photographs, fantastic music and once again a fantastic artist in Mr Gough......thoroughly enjoyed the tour.
Consider yourself added to my Christmas card list. Cheers Wyn 👍👍
WOW 😮. And thanks for embracing the moody weather!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment. It means a lot to me 👍
The best landscape vlogger on youtube ......look forward to all your videos
Stong compliment indeed, I'll take it though :)
Thank you so much 👍🏻👍🏻
Only one word to say FANTASTIC
Epic location and images to match.Feeling inspired right now....thanks for sharing
Hi Colin. Really glad you liked the video and feel inspired. I must be doing something right. Cheers 👍👍
Thanks for the shout-out Gary, I really appreciate it. I appreciate the kind words and compliments even more. Cheers, another great video!
You're more than welcome Steve. You might only gain a handful of extra subs but as we both know, every little helps. Keep producing your videos in exactly the same way, and I honestly feel your channel will explode. Your way of life, scenery and wildlife are totally alien to us here in the UK and for other parts of the world too i'm guessing. Because of that, and your natural charm and excellent photographs of course, kind of makes your channel unique. You don't bang on about settings this and settings that like we all either. It's a refreshing change. Love the horsey shots by the way. Gary 👍👍👍👍
Subbed to this chap.....
What a beautiful county we live in and you photograph it so well I’m inspired by your work
Cheers Paul
A wonderful film, Gary. It just goes to show that great images can come in the most trying of weather conditions. After watching this I am determined to get back to Skye in 2018. Thank you for the inspiration.
So glad I've inspired you. Go you'll love it. My workshop is in March if you fancy it? www.shootsmart.co.uk/photography-training-isle-of-skye/ Cheers David
I'm going to Skye next month for the first time made me even more excited 😁
Glad you liked it. Thanks for saying 👍👍 If you look at a few older videos on my channel you'll see a couple of videos where I shoot the locations you will probably want to shoot. Click here tinyurl.com/yd3v94e5 and you'll see the other IOS videos to the right.
WOW indeed, Gary. Vlog + music + incredible captures = cold coffee. Fantastic episode, thanks.
Oh no Brian we can't have cold coffee. I'll have to make the videos shorter :) Glad you liked it and thanks for saying 👍🏻👍🏻
With that sort of content I don’t mind cold coffee. Just been to Steve Mattheis’ channel. Good stuff and an area I know, but probably won’t be visiting again. Thanks for the pointer.
Lovely adventure. Great photos. Shoh lots of water under that bridge!
Pee'd it down all week. I've never seen it so torrential. Thanks for watching 👍👍
Great video and photos, good story of your week. Loved the photo of the small white house with the moody mountains in the background and the tree in the foreground.
Hi Clive. Probably my favorite too. Ironically that was taken on the way home at Glencoe. We just caught the light right.
Just a pleasure to watch.
My new number one fan. Thank you again Dean 👍👍
That was great, Gary - and I think the music was complementary to the visuals. Always a pleasure, your videos.
Many thanks again 👍👍
Wow... excellent production! Top notch, in my opinion. Really appreciate all your VERY HARD WORK.
That's it, your officially on my Christmas card list 👍👍
Great work! Love all the pictures! What a place! Thanks for sharing😊
You're welcome and thanks for taking the time out to comment, means the world to me 👍🏻👍🏻
Totally awesome vlog Gary....captured the elements and drama of the place brilliantly..some cracking images..thanks for sharing and caring..
Cheers Martin 👍
This is not just another video right enough, maybe one day I will capture photography like this in my retirement. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I also love sky but there are locations I have never seen before. Thanks for sharing. Regards Ken
Cheers Ken. The last couple of images were taken at Glencoe which is on route to the the Isle of Skye. Maybe they've confused you, sorry. Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment too, means the world 👍👍
Amazing vlog and wicked photos need to go back to sky. I think you had the best weather look at the atmosphere and drama
Cheers Paul. Yeah like I always said, there is nothing worse as a landscape photographer with hot sunny days. :)
Absolutely unbelievable those last few shots are stunning 👍love the music as well
Thanks for saying Gary 👍👍
greetings from the U.S. love watching your videos. I'm in love with landscape photography, and Isle of Skye is on my bucket list of places i must visit. When i find myself on your side of the pond i hope to get a chance to meet some of my favorite CZcamsr's, of which you are one. I'm an above average musician, so i follow a few from the U.K., the crew at Anderton's, Rabea Masaad, and Rob Chapman. Hope all is well and i love your content. Cheers from the high mountain desert of Central Washington State!
Very kind of you to say such nice things, thank you 👍
Gary that video was awsome brilliantly put together.cracking images and great music in such a beautiful location
Cheers Jim. Already got 4 thumbs down though. Always the same, I don't know people do that!
Another cracking video Gary .Loved the waterfall image and the house with the mountains towering in the background .looks a cracking place to photograph
Those shots were actually taken on route to the Isle of Skye. It was Glencoe. And to think we only drive past it to get to the highlands. Cheers Jon 👍👍
OMG - What the hell....... I have seen some cracking videos from you Gary but that tops the lot. The atmosphere you have created with the music and the dramatic images are nothing short of stunning. The work and dedication that goes into something like this shouldn't' be underestimated, you should be very proud of this. The timing of the music and the overall production is first class. You have a special gift of creating great images with passion and enthusiasm thats awe inspiring.
Cheers Ian, you're very kind. Tell that to the "Thumb Downers" brigade! So glad you appreciate everything that goes into making these videos. It's disheartening when people give videos a thumbs down, but comments like your surpasses my anger a million fold. Cheers 👍👍
Excellent vlog, fantastic images. Will watch this over and over again.
Thank you Donald. I have another due out too :)
WOW Great video. The landscape ( and the weather) on Isle of Skye is so like here in Iceland
yeah mental! :) I've never been to Iceland, it's on my bucket list 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for making it one video Gazza, loved it.Epic images in an epic location, inspirational for all photographers. How some people give the thumbs down is beyond me, keep up the great work, cheers.
We all get thumbs downs. I can only assume these are the same kids that spray paint walls too. Oh how hilarious! I'm not entirely sure why people actually give a thumbs down. But hey ho. Thanks William for the taking the time out to watch the video and for your kind comments. That's what it's all about for me 👍👍
Fun video to watch. Makes me want to visit there for sure. Wonderful images!
Cheers Kyla 👍👍
Gary, your pictures are something else, i learn a lot with your videos, thank you so much. Regards from Costa Rica.
Hi Esteban, very kind, thank you. Thanks for the support. Happy New Year
Spectacular images Gary. What an amazing trip/journey/exploration!
It certainly was adventurous :) Cheers Alan
I've decided I need to add the Isle of Skye to the list of places I'd like to visit someday. Right up there with Iceland.
It's cheaper in Scotland by a mile :) Glad the video inspired you 👍👍
Fantastic photos, I have the Isle of Skye on my bucket list. Love your enthusiasm in your vlogs. Keep up the great content
Cheers Justin 👍🏻👍🏻. You'll have to go it's an awesome place
Awesome music and photography. 👍
Cheers Richard, very kind
Enjoyed that Gary. I went to Isle of Skye for 3 days, it rained for 3 days! Good to hear another photographer who doesn’t think polarisers are a necessity!
Very rarely use them, mine cost me £200 too! Think they should change the name to Isle of Weather :)
Cheers ?James btw
By far one of if not the best landscape vlogs that ive seen, for me your images are superb I really could feel the mood of the weather in those stills and the choice of background music perfectly complimented the scenes. It is all too often that I see vlogs of beautiful scenery accompanied by inappropriate sound tracks. Thanks for a cracking video Gary.
Consider yourself on my Christmas card list... Very kind comments indeed, thank you so much Michael. I was guilty ref the bad music choices too if you look at my earlier videos. As a creator it pays to listen to criticism! Which Is why I now use more appropriate soundtracks 👍👍
Wonderful video Gary, some breathtaking shots. Thanks.
Cheers Alan, very kind 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Garry! Not just a video, it's an opportunity to experience the tough nature of northern Scotland. Photography you show in this video are great shots. My favorite shows at 15:22. I'm already looking forward to your next video. Greetings from Norway
Hi Jørg, tough indeed but I suspect it would be a little tougher in Norway :) Glad you liked the video and thanks for taking the time out to comment. Means a lot 👍👍
Great Vlog, great soundtrack running with it too-very apt. Those of us that have done the Isle of Skye will agree with you that the weather & rugged landscape are hard work but so worth it. It's better to work for our corn, you certainly did. You've prompted me to put the I of S back on my list. Thanks for a superb vid & the prompt to return :-)
Cheers Rob, so glad you liked my efforts and more importantly it's inspired you to return 👍👍
Fabulous set of images Gary and love watching all your videos 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Cheers Steve
Fantastically enjoyable vlog, Gary... The pictures on the whole were amazing!!
Thank you 👍👍
Wow - great editing at the end with the dramatic music against those fantastic dramatic images. Great stuff Gary!
Thanks for saying Jamie, cheers
Hi Garry, Another great video and some more cracking shots from viewpoints on Skye that I have,nt seen before, considering the weather was so bad you certainly came up with the goods, well done Ian
It really was a pretty demanding week, even by Sky's standards. Cheers for the support Ian 👍👍
Magnificent photos!
Thank you Paul 👍🏻👍🏻
your an amazing photographer and im inspired by you
Hi , Thank you very much. Thanks for watching and for taking time to comment too. It means a lot to me 👍
Nice one Gary on sky brilliant 👏 👍 😊
Many thanks
Cracking video Gary, nice to see the weather showing who’s the boss and well done for getting some top images despite the odds.
2 bosses in my life, the wife (of course) and the darn weather. I think I used the "darn" word in the right part of that sentence :)
Cheers Phil. 👍👍
Gary,
Your latest images pass my test... they don't say, "Gary was there." They say, "Don't you wish, Mike, that you were there?"
I appreciate the cinematic cuts. Your efforts are far above and beyond the standard "B-roll" we typically see! I'm very partial to the new and creative look of your blog. Way to forge new ground, Sir.
I don't know what attendees pay for your workshops, but I'll wager they are getting a lot more than their "money's worth."
Thank-You,
Mike
Mike, consider yourself on my Christmas card list. You're probably on top right now too :) Thank you very much for saying. 👍👍
Great video, what a magnificent place! One day I’ll get there. The crescendo of the music with your stills at the very end was epic! What a place!
Thanks for saying Chris. I do try :)
Brilliant photo, learning a lot many thanks.
You're welcome, Trevor. Glad you liked it 👍
Nice music and great landscape.
Thank you Rolf
Fabulous work Gary - great presentation - laughed so much at the fallen sign and the images are superb - kudos - I'm a big fan of Steve's too - he's so underrated! Cheers
Underrated indeed. I' know his channel will do well. Cheers for the comments BTW Peter, much appreciated 👍👍
Amazing! great photographs with some great music might I say. It takes a great photographer to make an image with horrible weather. Well done.
Thanks Steven, very kind 👍👍
Gary .. this is award winning .. I absolutely enjoyed every frame of it .. thank you.
Very strong comments but I'll take them :) Cheers Khalid 👍👍
Wonderful Gary loved every minute of it
Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment. Glad you liked it, Cheers Mark
WOW!!! What would granny say? Luuuvly or something like that. Thanks for letting the scenery talk for itself. Too many bloggers get bogged down talking instead of letting the images speak! I agree with you about polarizes and ND filters. Many bloggers over use them.
Thank you. Kind words indeed. I'm so glad I did the country proud 👍👍
Wow. Just awesome, an absolute joy to watch, thanks Gary. The images, particularly the last few are brilliant and capture the atmosphere of the loction beautifully. Just one thing - am I the only one who found he music a touch festive?
lol shhhhh don't say anything :) Of all things the wife mentioned it too. I didn't notice whilst I was editing. Thanks for watching Mark 👍👍
Skye looks amazing, great video Gary.
Just the best Sid. You need to go 👍👍
John Warren
One of your very best Gary. Loved it. Never been moved to comment on anyone's vlog, but for you I'll always make an exception. I shall be sure to keep bang up to date with your work. I have learned so much from you. I Love landscape but am limited to where I can go due to disability.
Thanks John, praise of the highest order, thank you. Sorry about your mobility issues. It's amazing how much you can actually photograph from the roadside in Skye. You're the man John 👍👍
Brilliant Vlog Gary, this is one i will keep coming back to, Superb images too. Skye is totaly fantastic. Well done. :)
Cheers Mark, glad you like it and would consider watching it again. That's praise indeed,
You said it.....it was hard work, and from where I am (in bed) it certainly looked hard work but hey if you dont work hard you will get no results and your hard work certainly paid dividends in this blog, well done your pictures were great, I enjoyed them all......thanks for sharing....
Cheers Des 👍👍
Gary. Thanks for advising me on your video blogging. Working my way through your inspirational videos. Your commitment is unbelievable. Keep up the great work. Hope to catch up again. Your one to one training a few years ago made me love photography. Thanks. Ian.
Hi Ian, That's very kind of you to say. How is it going? How's your picture taking?
I like it! Very nice images, and love that music. I appreciate so many of the photos, I'd hate to have to pick one. Well done! Keep up the good work.
Cheers Robert. Glad you liked it 👍👍
What a great video Gary.
I have been watching your blog and video 's for the past weeks.
Fantastic! 👍
What a cracking video Gary one of your best.
Cheers Peter 👍🏻👍🏻
'If Carlesberg did Videos?' Gary that is the best video I have watched on CZcams, well done, and congratulations on getting some amazing Images. As you say the more you put in the more you reap the rewards. Unfortunately I am not as mobile as I was, so am limited to how far I can walk, but you have made me think I should go back to Skye.
Joe consider yourself added to my Christmas list 👍 Kind words indeed, thank you. If you've never been before, I think you'd be amazed at how many amazing pictures you can take from the roadside in Skye. Please don't let that put you off. You just need a good guide ;)
Bad weather, but some great images! I really enjoyed this video.
Cheers Phil
Wow!! What a video Gary! Probably my favourite one I've seen of yours yet 😊 some potentially award winning images in there too! So incredibly epic - Well done! I absolutely love skye. I try and go there at least once a year. Phenomenal place! Thanks for this video.

Thanks Martin 👍👍
Hello Gary, very well done (including the sound effects ... ???) , yes the wind can be a drag but the images are awesome .
Thank you very much for saying. 👍👍
Amazing as always! Keep it coming!
Will do. Thanks for watching too 👍👍
I just came across your work Gary and really enjoyed it. I climb, wild camp and photograph in Skye all the time. You picked a bad week weather wise but the photos at the wee waterfalls and old dynamite factory at Lealt were great - its a bit of a dodgy climb down to there.
Hi John, I can tell you dodgy :) slipped on my derriere more than once. Luckily it has a built-in cushion. Crashed my drone there too :( Thanks for watching and commenting, means a lot 👍👍
That location is a heaven for photographers! Upload the next video! Lol
That's why I go there twice a year :)
Love you're work...What a location. Greg
Cheers Greg, thanks for saying. Hope you liked it enough to sub ;) 👍👍
I'm subscribed.

Cracking good vlog there again Gary awesome images love watching I also took your advice and got wife put kettle on thanks..
lol made me chuckle. Hope you didn't make her sit though it, that would be cruel :)
Really top notch work there Gary. I'm especially a fan of those last few images. First time to watch. Great stuff.
Cheers James. Thanks for taking a punt and I'm glad I didn't disappoint 👍👍
Well Gary, you’re so darned enthusiastic how could I not watch? 😀
Omg, so awesome. Been to these Places already and loved it. Ophelia got me at Lake District at the same Time. Too bad. But I will definitely come back to Skye, Harris/Lewis and “The Lakes“ ....but with more time and “better“ Weather next time.
Til then I will enjoy your Videos to feed my wanderlust.
Keep up the nice work. You're a good one 👍
Thank you Christian, you're very kind 👍👍
Very well done and great images!
Cheers Ed, very kind 👍👍
Wow! Stunning landscapes! Excellent vid. Really hope to get there in a near future. Keep up the good work. :)
Cheers Stefan, very kind 👍👍
Cracking Vlog and pics Gary, don't think I have ever been to Skye when there wasn't a bit of a breeze blowing lol
Hi John. I only visit the Island out of season so It's the same for me too. Cheers 👍👍
Great video sir, very cinematic feel, superb photos complimented with a magnificent music score 😎
Cheers Tony. There was a moan that the music was repetitive too. Guess you can't please everyone. Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment, means a lot 👍👍
Woohoo! You're back on
lol indeed I am :)
Stunning shots Gary & Great Vlog...
Cheers Peter, very kind
Loved the vlog :) I do like the longer ones, can have a good sit down and cuppa :) Awesome images too :)
I was a little worried it might be too long too. Hope you enjoyed your brew :) Thank you 👍👍
WOW
Another great vlog there Gary the images were truly amazing.
Thanks Jeff
Wow Gary - amazing Video now i want to visit the Isle of Skye instantly - great video - just clicked the folloe button - wonderful images by the way
Thanks for saying Rouven, you're very kind. You have to go by the way, you'll love it
Skye has to be one of my favourite places to visit and photograph. Visited it so many times and there are always new places to find, especially if you head away from the hot spots. The whole island just feels magical. You have amazing images in this vlog. I have only just got around to catching up on your channel so looking forward to watching more of your vlogs. :)
Cheers Andy, Very kind of you to say 👍🏻 I love it, that's why I go there twice a year, can't get enough of the place :)
I have been trying to go at least once a year but things got in the way this year. So I might try making it up with two visits next year. :)
Neist Point was bathing in sunshine when I went in March 2022 - it didn't rain for two weeks, so I'm catching up with the drama from your earlier visit. Too much drama in 2018 when we unfortunately closed the bridge.
Great video! Love the music too ( I get really tired of the samey tunes on other vlogs!), although, I do have a craving for shortbread now. And fab images, as always.
Watch those calories Heather, you don't want to end looking like me ;) Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment, means the world to me 👍👍
Yet another great vlog; I'm hoping to get up to the Isle of Skye myself next spring. Love the B&W conversion on the Lighthouse as it really suits the subject. However, the pano of the coastline with some sort of chimney in the foreground seemed to work better in colour.
Thanks again Paul. I know what you mean about certain images working in B&W and some in colour. I'm with you on your choices by the way. 👍👍
Gday Gary as an ozzie i always thought why would you live in Great Britton as a photogragher what an amazing place still Australia is not bad love your take on vlogging breath of fresh air
Thank you John. Very kind of you to say. I don't know why but this video didn't do too well? This it was over-produced lol G'day by the way :)
