The buck I shot last year was slightly quartering to from the ground at 10-12yds...i remember it felt like an eternity of aiming even though in reality it was probably less than 2 seconds. Adrenaline causes you to hyper focus and time "stands still". Take your time to aim guys, itll pay off. I watched mine tip over cuz of it.
I’m not sure y’all will see this comment, but figured I give a shout. I’m a now retired college athlete and avid competitor. I have had my fair share of high stakes moments, however, nothing makes my adrenaline race more than preparing for a shot. How do y’all battle your “nerves” and what allows you to stay so calm? Great video as always!

I think I would have difficulty aiming both that low and that far forward unless I practiced it all summer. I don’t care about scoring on 3d animals anyway but people I shoot with, mostly non hunters, think I missed my shot when I aim for the vital V. I’m happy with my shots and they coach me trying to get my shot center mass. I just smile and say I’ll try harder. I practice for short blood trails not perfect 3d scores. Great video boys.

Thank you for the thoughtful commentary on shot placement. I practice so much that my neck hurts some time, but I generally put the arrow exactly where I want it. Thank you again and good luck this fall.
One caveat I always add to this conversation is from us southern whitetail bow hunters: the "when in doubt, back out" mantra is a rare thing for us. During our bow seasons (GA, for me specifically), the temperature only drops to maybe the mid 70s at night. If you are a hunter concerned with meat in any way, we ALWAYS laugh at these shows who just flippantly say "we'll back out and find him the AM." Well, that's great. Y'all live in a refridgerator, we don't. Lethal shots are paramount on our hunts or that deer is spoiled meat and/or coyote food.

good stuff. I think another good thing to have in mind is how the deer will spin when quartered to. Ive never seen one spin into the sound of the shot. Knowing theyre going to open up those vitals for you on the drop is comforting.

Great video. Very glad you point out the placement of the ten ring on 3d deer targets. Fine to practice hitting them, but know where to aim on real, live game. We owe that respect to the game. Again great video, good visual examples. 👍
I want to thank you guys for posting this video, and providing all the useful information. I have always been "scared" of hitting the shoulder, and have always been taught to aim for the crease. I shot a buck last night that was quartering towards me, and I went right up the front leg and made a perfect shot through the heart. If I had aimed at the crease, I likely would've caught one lung/liver/stomach, and it could have ended up being a very long evening. Instead, it was a blood trail as if someone had taken a bucket of blood and poured it the entire 75 yards until I found the animal expired. Thank you guys for the awesome information, and the always exciting content.

Very good video guys. I think the improvement in camera quality and being able to slow shots down has helped immensely in understanding how deer react to the shot. When some of us first started watching the Monster Buck videos it was hard to tell exactly what was happening at the shot. It seemed liked the recovered shots were behind the shoulder, so that’s where we aimed. Now that technology has improved it seems the best aiming point is exactly where you discussed. We can now see the proof.

Great content! I recently watched a video, can’t remember who it was, but they were showing how much more explosive a deer can react when it’s head is down in sort of the feeding position compared to the head straight up. I never noticed it before but they’re already in that compressed spring position like a sprinter would be. Just thought I’d share!

This is great info you guys are sharing. I'm a 20 yard and in guy. I have taken a deer a little farther (25 yds), but I know 20 yards is my true max. Shot angle is important to me (ground/tree stand). I too, shoot into the vital V a little tighter (and yes, I have hit too far forward before, but I have also hit to far back an those seem to be the longest track jobs). Knowing your bow and being honest of it's capabilities is probably underrated. Great Video.

Really good info guys. I shot a buck last year, nice 8 point, 9 yards from the ground, hit slightly high but still center lungs. The arrow stopped half way through. He snapped 6 inches off the fletch end on a tree. Waited about 45 minutes before I started looking for blood, but I saw the arrow as he ran off, knew it was a good hit. Followed blood for about 100 yards, then backed out. He ran 450 yards before I lost blood. Had a dog come in and couldn't find him. Looked for 3 days and never recovered him. I decided right then I needed to step up my arrow set up and my shot placement. Thanks guys for the videos! Great work! Ps, ended up with a doe 2 weeks later, same spot.

Great information. Ethical kill really just makes you feel better. It is a life after all! I have always shot low, for this very reason. They will drop to run. Then you are still in there kitchen with your shot. Good stuff! God Bless

This is a good learning experience. I had thought I did everything right last year in aiming low at a buck from 30 yards away. I hunt with a crossbow though and what I learned is the deer don't hear the shot before the bow is there, so I hit the brisqiet of the deer. Blood looked good on the arrow, until I found white hairs and fat on it and almost no blood anywhere for a trail. Next year I'll hunt it like a hunt with a rifle instead of a compound bow. If you could do a video on shot placement using a crossbow, that'd be great!

I had to come back and pause frames of this video and have it explained to me again.
Yesterday I shot my second deer and lost it because of so many factors, but mostly all of the factors discussed here.

Great one! I shot a few bucks in the liver, one I clipped the lung but still couldn’t find it, it really caused me a lot of stress, lower closer to the shoulder from now on. Thanks!
Any chance you can do a podcast on finding the right tree, I find my self taking like 15 min standing around looking for the right tree, sometimes I’ll set the first stick up and then look over and say I should set up in that tree and then I have to move all my stuff again.
On the SD buck, I would of aimed in the pocket between the shoulder & brisket. Just a little right of where he hit the deer Double lung/heart and just ribs bones in the way. Great video as usual!👍
I learned just how low you can hit a deer during the 2022 season. Using my 350 legend sighted in at 100yrds. I had a buck 148yrds away standing in a bedding area locked down on a doe. I knew the bullet would drop but I had no idea how much. Aiming at the shoulder with a perfect broadside shot I squeezed the trigger. Gun fires and the deer jumps out from the bedding into the open field. Sitting there thinking why on earth this deer isn't running I quickly considered a follow-up shot. Reaching for the bolt to put another round in the chamber I watch my first ever split brow tine 8 point drop on the spot. Walking up to the deer I find the entry hole 3 inches up from the bottom of the deer. While field dressing the deer I found the bottom point of the heart was blown out and the bullet remained in the chest cavity. I learned a lot that night and will definitely remember to factor in bullet drop more as well as energy loss on longer shots.
This hunting story is much longer than what I wrote and is one I'll be telling till the end of time.

After hearing RF discuss jumping the string and his indication that the fletchings were the more probable culprit causing animals to jump before impact, I had to stand down range and listen to a couple shots. Those fletchings sound like a pissed off Hornet buzzing past. The twang of the bow almost goes unnoticed by comparison. These animals can easily hear the fletchings ripping the air and the only way to interpret that sound is a threat.
I don't think this can be talked about enough!!! You guys and Ranch Fairy are really bringing to light where we need to be shooting on animals. I lost 3 deer the same year shooting center mass and not using the best broadheads. This year is the year for change.

Interesting. I have been burned so many times by shoulder bone shots that I started aiming further back to avoid that risk(and I am having more success as a result). Is the "low and forward" placement only for folks with pinpoint accuracy or is there something I am missing when it comes to the shoulder bone problem?
I've been bow hunting for over 50 years now and I can't tell you how many deer I've seen over the years with arrows and broadheads sticking out of their shoulder. There is a lot of pressure around me. I aim for the heart. If the deer doesn't move I get them and if they drop a little you still get the lungs. I rarely have a deer go over 35 to 40 yards when I hit the lungs. There is no pinpoint Accuracy when shooting a animal. A deer can move for a variety of reasons. I shot a buck in the heart once and found him 3 hours later and had to make a follow up shot. When cleaning him there was an x in the middle of his heart from the fixed blade broadhead I was shooting. There are no guarantees just do what works best for you Good luck this season.
In my experience, the lungs are a priority to the heart. Behind the shoulder in the vital V will achieve the quickest kill.
A wide cutting broadhead in the V region with sufficient energy to create a pass-through is the ticket.
There seem to be a lot of videos on the market showing “kill shots” for example something like “30 kill shots in 30 seconds”. as an archery deer hunter in Minnesota what I’m most interested in is, yes, the point of impact, giving me a chance to test my understanding against the video, but more than that I value what happens after the shot. I realize it’s hard to both hunt and film But those first few seconds after the shot are drilled into my memory. I’m searching for indications that tell me something about the shot, good or bad. Lacking that kind of video follow up a detailed description Of the thoughts that run through the mind of the hunter as he tries to make order out of what just happened can be very helpful. Your video and others by the hunting public attempt to do just that. I commend you and like other comments I urge you to keep it up.
Have you guys done a video on the sound an arrow makes when it's hitting long versus gut. I believe you guys talked about it briefly in a video while back but I think that would be a cool idea for another educational video. the reaction to dear gives after a shot and the sound it makes on impact
Tight to the shoulder has been something I switched to a couple of seasons ago. Now, like Greg had mentioned that aiming slightly lower to account for the deer jumping the string is my next focus.
