    I did not know you should not pack the soil when planting a cactus like that also I learned the hard way with gloves even with good leather gloves they are destroyed with the thorns getting inside the leather

    I should have worn gloves when I repotted my coral cactus the other day! And a little piece broke off and I got a little bit of the latex on my fingers.... it did wash off. Thanks for the warning! I like the idea of using paper that way!

    I loved this video! You were spot on about the prickly pear needles, holy moly! What should I do if my cacti are spotting yellow? Almost like human skin blisters after a sun burn only less poofy.

      Oh no! I would just leave it and let it figure it self out. Sunburn can heal but the scaring will not go away.

    I just got a Cow's Horn cactus from Home Depot and the soil looks atrocious. I need to brace myself and figure out how I'm going to repot this! 😅 I am thinking of cutting the plastic bin and getting it out that way. Any advice would be amazing!

    I'm settin here looking at this gimungous cactus I bought about 7 months ago. It was no more than 3 inches tall and now it's pushing 8. No clue what it is. It's prickly, hella hairy, it's got some sort of purple flower stickin out the side and it's fixing to fall over onto my bed any day now 😅 So thanks! I was fearing waking up with this thing stickin out my leg.

    Good info! When do you water and feed cactus after repotting?

    • @GroovyPlantsRanch
      @GroovyPlantsRanch  Před 4 lety +6

      Karen,
      Water right after repotting. It will help the roots with the shock of being transplanted. In general we don't feed our cactus. They don't really need it and we don't want them to grow any faster then they are already growing. That being said if you want to fertilize your cacti twice a year is good, once in spring and once again mid to late summer. If you are in a warmer climate winter feeding might also be appropriate. In Ohio where we are winter fertilizing is not a good idea.

    I save brown packing paper sheets for everything: lining inside trash cans, baking, cooking transfers, spray paint coverings. Now I'll rope my cactus in for repotting.

    Hi. Great video! I just repotted a Silver torch that was way too large for it's pot and root bound. After cleaning the roots and letting it dry for several days i repotted it. The mix I used is bone dry and have not watered it yet. Being that it's October should I hold off on watering for the now? Thanks for any info.

    • @GroovyPlantsRanch
      @GroovyPlantsRanch  Před rokem +1

      If it was bone dry before you repotted it and it is still bone dry I would water it. Then wait quite a while to water again. The water will help to hold the plant in place and encourage root growth.

    Hi there, thank you for your information. I do have a question: I got a big used empty terracotta pot and I don’t know what type of plant was there before. The inside has dirt and old roots attached to the wall, the outside has greenish spots that looks like algae to me. Can I plant my cactus (African milk tree) using this pot as it is? Or do I need to do any deep cleaning to avoid any kind of bugs etc?
    Thank you for your help

    • @GroovyPlantsRanch

    so, I know you said that a drainage hole is a must-have for a cactus, but my brother wants me to repot his and put it in a wooden box that doesn't have a drainage hole (he wants to keep it in his room). Can he just water it less or does he need to drill a hole in the bottom?

    • @evehellod9776
      @evehellod9776 Před 2 lety +1

      I repot a cactus into a pot without drainage holes and it survived, it grew a lot and I just watered it less. Although, another cactus I had that was in the same type of pot rotted, even though the other one survived and they got the same amount of water.
      I assume you’ve already repotted it, but I’ll just say that a pot without drainage can work, but to make sure your cactus doesn’t rot you should have drainage holes, you don’t want the water to build up.

    I live in SW Louisiana and I used to hunt deer years ago in the hills around San Antonio, TX (near a town called Bandera). These type (prickly pear) are growing wild everywhere in the hills, as are various types of Yucca. You can't emphasize avoiding the glockets (sp?) enough when handling them. I order to get them out (as they'll drive you crazy!) using a large magnifying glass and a pair of fine TWEEZERS. You'll be surprised at yourself at how accurate you can become removing these little almost microscopic spines. My advice is to ALWAYS use gloves when handling these type cacti.

    I just repotted mine and already messed up lol. I think everything is fine except i put it in a pot that was deeper but otherwise the same width. Do i need to change it or is it okay for a while? Its a barrel cactus and id prefer it to grow tall rather than wide if that makes a difference.

  • @mikeuher5054
    @mikeuher5054 Před 2 lety

    Why do you need a drain hole? I only water it once it's thoroughly dry. Never too much water

    • @GroovyPlantsRanch
      @GroovyPlantsRanch  Před 2 lety

      We always recommend a pot with a hole, it just makes watering easier. But if you are having success and your pot doesn't have a hole, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    Not true about drainage hole being a necessity. Had the same cacti and succulents for years and as long as you monitor watering and plant it in the right medium to compensate for extra moisture, you'll be fine. Terracotta is definitely the better choice though.
