  • This is an early 21st Century video of my Shifu, master Brian A. Hall. Demonstrated here is a form called Golden Pheasant Rotating Palms. It is from a lineage of Bagua Zhang which predates Dong Haichuan, and does not include the circle-walking practice. Unbeknownst to most, the circle-walking practice for which Bagua Zhang is famous nowadays, was only added to the art in various lineages during the early 20th Century. While circle-walking is a most excellent practice, it was an external Daoist influence upon the art. In certain sects of Daoism, prayers and other religious spiritual practices are commenced while walking in a circle, often around the symbol of the Bagua - hence the inspiration.
