    📽 📽 IN THIS WEEK'S VIDEO:
In this double blind tasting we pit Knob Creek's 12 Year offering against the standard Knob Creek 9 Year bottling. Knob Creek 12 Year is twice the price ($70 vs $35) and only offers 3 more years of age. Is Knob Creek 12 Year a ripoff or does it truly stand out as better than Knob Creek 9 Year?

KC12 is one of the best bourbons on the market. Period. It’s why I think people are crazy spending over $80 on any bourbon. $65 and pretty readily available (I’m in NJ ) and just brings so much flavor, quality and consistency. Look around in the market today at age stated bourbons from the big distilleries. Old Forester 1924 10 year old at $115?! Ridiculous…

I found my old bottle of KC15 was more oaked than the KC18. KC12 is a 'always have in stock' buy for me, such a great pour for the price. The private selects can be fantastic too. I have one of the old single barrel picks that was hand selected by Freddie Noe and is ~15yrs old and 120prf. Night and day, so much better than KC15. I wish they'd bring back the older barrel picks.

Here in Albuquerque the 9 year is $30.99, while the 12 is $66.99 (on the Total Wine site for the Uptown store). And on Wednesday I bought a store pick at Kelly Liquors (the Mountain Run store) for $56.99 because if I didn't, I'd probably never have another chance. Given the difference in price between the 9 and the 12, I'll stick with the 9 unless I get unexpected fundage. Given the difficulty y'all are having deciding which y'all prefer, I'm not sure the added three years are worth the huge rise in price. And that 9 year Knob Creek is fine bourbon.

  • @bbpete8349
    @bbpete8349 Před 7 měsíci +1

I agree with Erin that there's not enough difference in taste (for me) to spend twice as much for 12 vs 9 year. (Kudos to Josh for using "posit a theory" as a phrase).

Way back in the 1990s, when I was just getting serious about booze, a friend recommended Knob Creek. At that time, there was only one version. I don't remember if it even had an age statement back then, but it was the standard version that now has a 9-year age statement. It was a very good introductory bourbon, and I still like it. I find it interesting that I still like the bourbon that got me started, while I have outgrown the Scotch (Chivas Regal 12 and Glenlivet 18) that got me started down that path and now prefer others.
I have Knob Creek 9, 12, and 18, and a 9-year single barrel store pick. Out of all of these, I find the 12 to be the most balanced and harmonious, and the 9-year single barrel is very close. The 18 is more interesting in some ways, but it is a little messy. Bourbon tends to go funny after 12 years, so I wouldn't expect an 18-year bourbon to come together perfectly, but there are flavors and complexities that will only come into the spirit when it reaches an advanced age. I got lucky on the 18 - I was able to get it for a fair price and without having to wait in a tater line. It would be nice if I could add the 15 to this line-up, but it doesn't tend to be readily available. One of the local bars has the 15, so I can always order it when I go out.
Knob Creek is priced well for its age statements. The 9-year is a bargain, and the 12 (and the 15 and 18 if they can be found for close to MSRP) are priced about the same as good quality Scotch of the same age. Though I think the 12 is the best tasting of the bunch, you can't go wrong with any of them. Even though the older ones are more expensive and maybe not as immediately appealing, they provide a unique experience that can't typically be found in a younger bourbon. I'll guzzle down the younger ones faster than the 18, but there are days when my mood will call for the somewhat messy, more challenging older booze.

It's as you said, incredibly drying, but lacking the sweeter, bourbon-y flavors I was expecting. It feels like KC9 SiB Pick but watered down too much so the balance is off. I just came from a "Whiskey Wednesday" at a local eatery. Flight of KC 9 -12-18 yr for $15. I really wasn't that familiar with Knob Creek but I'm a fan now. The 9 yr was very solid value and the18yr was magic but I think I'm going to get myself a bottle of the 12 yr. For me, there was a lightly peppered chocolate covered peanut flavor at just the right level that sealed the deal.

I just A/B the 9 vs the 12 year old Knob Creek. 9 is a little sweeter, and the 12 has a little more flavor, including a pleasant pepper type flavor. For me, it's worth it for the higher price for the 12 year Knob Creek.

I had the same result in a blind as Erin. 12 is great but 9 just hit moved me. Odd thing about my bottle of 9… after almost a year of being open and half full, I had a pour and it came across so citrusy. Thought it was just the session, but had it again the next weekend and it was the same heavy citrus. Really good but weird. Never had a 9 that had any citrus.

Here in VA the KC12 is going for $70 which is annoying because I see every other state is getting it around $55 but w.e I got a bottle just to check it out. And I’m not too mad about it. I will say that the Kc9 is Fantastic for $30. I do like the KC12 over the KC9 but for the price point I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. But, if it’s your first time trying it it’s definitely worth getting at least once. Let’s just say I’ll probably be taking my time with the 12.

I hate that we all have such different palates. I've been on this bourbon journey for about a year now. 50 bottles in personally, and tried many, many more and I just can't stand any Jim Beam products. I hate that I dislike KC9 so so much. I wish it weren't the case. Perhaps, I should try the 12 now. The way you guys described your previous experiences KC9 is my experience as well.

We hear ya Michael! As a counterpoint, it's kind of a good thing that we do have different palates, as it makes whiskey distillers do different things to cater to different flavor profile preferences, and we get so much more cool whiskey as a result. Cheers, thanks for watching, and to thine own palate be true!

I'm with Erin on the KC 9 - I chose it over 12 in my blind also. But 1 bite Reese's! and the chocolate to peanut butter ratio is all wrong in those mini cups... My full KC blind was KC 9 120 SiB, KC 9, KC 12, KC 18 and KC 15 last...

The best price for KC 12 is $59.99 in my area in South Jersey. 👍 🏆🏅

I love Knob Creek 9 but I’ve been buying Coopers Craft 100 lately. I need to blind them. The CC 100 is a hair darker than my Eagle Rare and it’s supposedly younger.

Love both of those. What a value Cooper's Craft 100 is.

CC100 is a great bottle and we might prefer it. The extra step of notching the barrel staves does wonders for the flavor and color on that whiskey as you mentioned.

Reese Cup is a 1 bite deal, unless you get a big cup.

I will readily admit that i like KC12 better. But I rarely reach for it because LC9 is still fantastic and at Costco I see her routinely for under $20.

    3 bites!
And I think the KC 12 is a straight up peanut butter cup 🥃

Multi-biter. No need to rush the eating of the Reese’s. Stop and smell the roses once in a while, Josh.
