  • I summarise a debate between myself and a flight sim friend on the value of small airport add-on's for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Are they worth the money? We also take a short flight in the Cessna 172 from KPAG to Bryce Canyon (KBCE), and compare Default scenery for Bryce Canyon to the recent ORBX release.

    Great review, thank you,
This is new territory for developers, before starting this project I had to make decisions on what was best to spend time on. I did add a smallish section of photo real around the immediate airport and approaches, it allowed me to clean up the areas in the default without hand placing patches of grass in the editor, but overall the default PR was pretty good. So I was able to then focus on what I believe were the defining points of this airport. The buildings are so full of character, everywhere I looked there was something of interest, from the historic hanger to the awesome FBO building and the outbuildings with rusty metal features and the fuel depot that kinda summed up the age and character of this little piece of Utah.
Every object was modelled in as much detail as I could see in the great photos supplied by Jarrad . His eye for details made sure nothing was missing. Just check out his version of LOWI Innsbruck and you can see how he sees all.
My favourite part of developing this airport was launching the sim at sunrise and just quietly watching the sunrise, and listening to to sounds, Asobo has given us an amazing platform to develop for, I finished the project feeling very happy that I had created something worth visiting and spending time with a cuppa and just enjoying the ambience.
That’s for the very upfront and unbiased review and to give me the opportunity to make a comment, and thanks to all the pilots out there that have supported this release.
    Cheers
    Ken

Hello, nice work! Definitely an airport with character and that's what your add-on does, it adds on the character, which in the default scenery is missing. In my opinion that's where the added value will be for further developments. Take airports that have special characters and bring them to display. A nice example I would love to see is Hilo (ITO) or Kona (KOA) airport on Hawaii, as they're almost open air, a completely different feeling and atmosphere.

      Beautiful work!
I've not started flying in FS2020 yet (waiting on my GPU of choice to become readily available), but I definitely plan to pick this one up once I do.
As a software developer, myself, I know all too well how often end consumers are unwilling to pay an amount commensurate with the amount of work/effort needed to create a polished product. This is very much the case in the particular subset I work in (iOS development).
By chance, do you know if there are any plans by ORBX to update the Catalina Airport (KAVX) product for FS2020? It'd be another wonderful "small airport" showcase, and probably garner some attention from flight simmers here in Southern California. I know that I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

My view for years William. It's pointless having an upgraded airport if you have to fly to it from a default airport or fly for hours! Having said that, Orbx in particular have indeed released such products, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

  • @pinkfloyd7572
    @pinkfloyd7572 Před 3 lety +24

Unless the airport has a significant importance to you, I can't see it being worth purchasing. You're going to spend 60 seconds there and then fly off to explore the rest of the planet which already looks so amazingly good. I've explored about 0.1% of a world which cost me $80. I'm not spending $20 or $30 on scenery that covers about 0.0000000001% and that I will not use often. It's just not worth it. We need new planes more than new scenery.

I'd agree. It's not a bad option if you want to simulate a small ferry operation in and around the Grand Canyon area. If not however just buying it to visit once or twice before disappearing to other parts of the world never to be seen again does seem a tad profligate. It will be interesting to see how much the USA "upgrade" improves the default scenery making this airfield seem even more "overpriced".

For me, I'll happily sink money into airfields in the UK and Europe since its my favourite regions to fly. Furthermore if I'm planning a specific regional tour, addon airfields really add to the immersion. The new price modelling seems very fair and well worth trading in those 3 cups of coffee. I have to agree with you, I too, enjoy flying to out of the way airports in smaller GA aircraft. And I would and do pay for the privilege. I enjoy seeing the scenery around and the layouts of various airports, many of which I’ve visited in real airplanes and many more I never got to see. Since. I’m disabled now and can not go jump in my plane and go sightseeing, I now have to rely upon my simulator. So 👍 yes, I will pay extra the privilege of flying into more realistic options.

Than starting in the morning to explore landscapes I will never see in real life is beautiful. This smaller airfields give me the Illusion to be there. A virtual dream. After reading the comments I have come to realize that most simmers have no idea of the time and cost involved in super detailing an airport. If you use software for commercial purposes you are required to purchase the commercial versions of it. You have to obtain photographs and aerial photos are not cheap. Some of the airports take over a year to complete and the developer's time is worth what he values it at.
All of us can upgrade any airport we choose to do but that takes a lot of time and all objects included must be original if you wish to publish them.
Did you notice that the hangar door was open and the interior was detailed? Not only that but Mark was able to taxi into the hangar without losing the details. This airport is well worth the cost and I will purchase any future airports Ken publishes.

  • @daleevans3250
    @daleevans3250 Před 3 lety +4

I do not fly Tube-Liners so these small airports are important to me. Before I purchase an airport I always check the screenshots to see how much GA there is at the airport. The major airports do not want you there unless your approach and landing speeds are around 737 speeds. When I arrive at the airport I want it to look as much like the real thing as possible.

Id say you have to pay for the privelegde to upgrade an airport close to where you live, as they probably wont sell as much as the bigger ones. FBO still looks the same. MSFS use to sell regions back in the day. We all had little 3 ring binders with floppy disks to load different regions of the country. Crazy how far it's come.

all boils down to what it's worth to the user... I'd easily pay $30-40 for any of my past "home airports" IRL, since I'd use them a lot, and it'd be worth it to me. I would, however, expect high res custom runway and taxiway + ramp textures - since that's where I notice the biggest difference. There's a lot of beautiful 'major airport' packages out there, that I wouldn't spend anything on - because I just wouldn't fly there that often.
I don't envy the developers here... I think you have to pick an airport that you're passionate about and hope enough other people feel the same. There was already a thread on ORBX forums about Bryce - and a lot of people were disappointed that the scenery only includes the airport, and not improvements for the National Park... which sorta makes sense, since if you're buy Bryce Canyon, you probably plan to fly over the canyon at some point ;)
Also, in your A/B comparison - I'm pretty surprised to see not much improvement on the runway / taxiway texturing. The real airport has some interesting patchwork pavement and cracking - none of which I see in the add-on. goo.gl/maps/phF5tHtk9cLexp6Z8

Hi Mark. I always tell people, the 'worth' of buying an airport scenery is in how often you will fly from there. If you use the airport as a regular hub, sure! (big airports are easier hubs in that regard). Airports for me have been the biggest waste of money. I have bought quite a few desirable airports from Orbx in P3D. Not only do I not use P3d any more, but most of those purchases I have only visited once (and one or two not at all because I forgot I had them. As such, I tended to focus on regional / international where I would visit (San Diego, Palm Springs, and Monterrey were the only I got value from). Now that I have True Earth for xplane, at least my region is more focused and may make use of airports better (though Orbx does a great job of touching up default fields). I like exploring the world, and my xplane setup makes it more difficult... Which is why MSFS will be used alongside. ORBX in general is too expensive, and the cost of small airports needs to be considered to attract sales. I am a GA pilot primarily.

Good review, I like all types of airfield/ Airports, My home airfield Lilydale in Melbourne was a free add-on from Orbix with the Australian scenery and was very well done for FSX, I miss those airfields with the new Simulator and hope Orbix will do Australian airports again. I agree with you Mark, I love hangers that you can go into. There was one for Seattle that was done for FSX had all the Boeing airfields/plants with views inside the main assembly hangers. I would certainly buy small airfields in my own country or really interesting ones outside of it. The three versions of MSFS have a large cost to up-grade, I originally went for the premium Deluxe but realized my PC specs were not good enough. The cost of upgrading is pretty expensive and I wonder why MS do not allow parts of the upgrades to be bought, there are only a few things that I would really want , one aircraft and London Heathrow ?

Mark, another awesome video thanks you for your insights on the channel.
As an ex Microsoft employee, I managed to pick up a copy of MS FS Premium Deluxe this week and installed it overnight (boy it took ages). I have to admit, I’m impressed and frustrated at the same time. However, I will not pass comment until I’ve had much longer to play with the new sim. Default EGPF is pretty darn good for a default airport but I still expect I’ll be spending a few quid with Gary @ UK2000 before the year is out. Glasgow was just autopen so not great but hey: I’m used to True Earth on P3D. Where the sim really impressed me was around my own town of Strathaven, where our little airfield (where I fly from) is there and again the default scenery isn’t too bad at all. The local windfarms were not really depicted that well and with Lanarkshire having more windfarms than any other county in Europe, I guess we’ll still have to wait on Orbx working their magic. What was disappointing and where I shut down MSFS was the poor detail around Edinburgh. Two default bridges, instead of the three iconic bridges? Even FSX had the two original bridges.
So, back to your awesome video: I think our community is spread quite evenly: some enjoying the tube liners and others enjoying low and slow. I therefore think small airport scenery has its place and I know I’ll buy up airports large and small across the UK when they’re available because I do love to fly VFR around this beautiful part of the world, as much as I love the study level tube liners. And, this is where MSFS will conquer the future (in my opinion). As you rightly said in this video: MFS has a much, much, much, much higher base platform to start with, the add-ons will be cheaper and without a doubt make this sim what it is and what it will become over the next ten+ years.
Keep up the god work my friend. You add so much value to this great community. Graeme

Hi, i'm been a flight simmer since the days of Microsoft FS98. The basic sim was exactly that, so the addition of a third party photorealistic airport really did help the level of immersion, as did the appearance satellite ground imagery some years later. If you are primarily into flying the larger commerical aircraft then a small airport scenery makes little or no sense, although it could be argued that you don't really need detailed enroute ground imagery at 35,000ft either. The immersion really comes on that final approach to an airport - of any size. Who wants to see a flat and empty world on a final approach. The smaller airports/airfields are only value for money if these are on routes you regularly fly between. An airport you might only ever fly into once or twice is not Value for Money. The developers of these add-ons generally know their market, the likes of ORBX airfields/airports previously being scenery sold in X-Plane.

I did indeed enjoy the purpose and presentation of this exploratory video. Its introduction of the discussion of small airport cost versus experience enhancement is most welcome. I attended a group flight last night with pilots from msFLIGHTS.net terminating at KBCE. Its flight lead, gamertag Waterman, had just purchased Bryce Canyon and was very happy with the rendering and the price. Several pilots on that flight, seeing Waterman's screenshots of KBCE, determined to purchase the airport thru Orbx direct.
I personally think the price is fair for the obvious quality of the work. I have seen other small payware airports earlier in this sim's release that I did not think worth the money being asked. I will agree with those who suggest clusters of small airports, whether sold separately or in bundles. Bryce Canyon lends itself to excursion to Zion National Park as well as the in-video mentioned Grand Canyon. Our group flight was from Las Vegas area to KBCE, VFR sightseeing.

There’s nothing wrong in the way MSFS generated the world. It’s impressive. But in the detail it falls short. Those details are the smaller and regional airports. This also is only logical. It takes a lot of effort to create the amount of detail in every airport like a ORBX does. I will certainly spend money on the small airstrips from third parties, because they add to the feeling of flying. In my country only one airport is handmade. I fly GA aircraft (single engine) . I’ll never use the large airports, so I appreciate the small airports a lot.

In my many years in the simulation hobby, I’ve spent a LOT of money on third party scenery software, mostly from ORBX. The scenery in MSFS2020 is certainly a step-up from simulation platforms of the past. However, given my use of flight simulation primarily as a training tool for my job as an airline pilot, I’ve decided to limit my purchase of third party scenery in MSFS2020 to those larger airports where my company has hubs and airports that the company uses in simulator training. I may indulge in purchasing those airports that I owned in previous sims platforms and am offered discounts as a previous owner. In fact, I’ve already done so with KMIA (my real world home base), KDEN and KORD. I’m currently looking for the release of KDFW, KSEA, KRNO, KIAH, KSNA, and KDCA. My company uses these airports in simulator training. While I mentioned my use of flight simulation primarily as a training tool, I have to say that I’m thoroughly enjoying MSFS2020 recreationally. It’s simply beautiful! I’m really looking forward to the release of VR for MSFS2020!

Bet the Bryce Canyon scenery lasts longer than the 3 cups of coffee, Mark! There are some really high quality airports either available, or on 'final', and purchase is always at the discretion of the buyer. BUT! I have seen some absolute shockers around the US$ 10 to US$20 bracket that really look like they are releases from primary schools, so, buyer beware! All published advertisers pictures need really close examination. Thank you, and as always, stay well.

Hi Mark, thanks for the video, fun to watch. I also like that type of flying, but there is so much on offer OOB that I wouldn't pin myself down to one airport, to "make back" the investment. Looks like the runway and taxi area are very similar, but buildings make the diff. For me, a 90/10 effort for a 10/90 purpose. I'd consider paying $5 if they gave me 5 small, attractive airports.

I’m all for payware add-on airports, and I enjoy the smaller GA airports in remote areas for VFR as well as the bigger hubs for IFR. I do however think that the pricing levels for the smaller GA airports should be somewhat less for MSFS as the default surrounds and PR terrain are already there (as you have mentioned and demonstrated in the video). It seems that this is the case but I think for a really small 2 to 3 building airport like this, the pricing is still just a little too high for what you are getting (albeit as great as it is). I think the range of US$ 5 to 8 would seal the deal for me. Coffee in South Africa is thankfully quite a bit less than overseas - so still about 3 coffees worth in South Africa @ US$2 each. 😉 thanks again for an enjoyable and relevant topic.

    Yeah...
It all depends on how often you would use a particular airport...
Take KCBE, If you buy it and land once, it has cost you £10:00
If you land at it 10 times it has cost £1:00...
50 landings, then it has cost 20p per landing...
This is how I work out weather a a payware addon is worth the cash or not...
For example, my local airport is BRISTOL UK EGGD...
I would buy this airport, weather I fly it often or not, so would be breaking my own rule just on this occasion!
Sadly I don't think there is one!

Hi Mark, nice to see you on YT again and you've raised an interesting question here! Personally I have just thrown my lot in with MSFS2020 and have taken the bold step of completely archiving X-Plane 11 and all of the addons that I've purchased over recent years. I firmly believe that with constant development, MSFS will be the way forward and in that respect, I'm very pleased to see that third party scenery packages are being made available at a pretty low cost. Having said that, would I still buy them given how good the default scenery is? Maybe I would, but only if the quality was really there and only for airports of particular interest and/or those in the UK where I live. Keep up the good work Mark :-)

I'm strictly a GA pilot, I have little interest in trying to emulate the feel of flying an Airbus 320. I fly my simulated GA planes pretty much domestically, and while I may sometimes choose to fly, say, LAX to Catalina Island, it's the Catalina experience that I'm most interested in. LAX, of course, is already one of the included handcrafted terminals in MSFS, and that's nice, but I wouldn't pay extra for the enhancement... I wouldn't know the difference, anyway. I think I would be more likely to pay for a small airport (yeah, Catalina, I guess), or perhaps one that I have actually flown to (I'm glad Sedona is already included) rather than a large airport.

Great video, thanks. I've been an Orbx fan for ther past 12 years, and continue to be so. On a pointer of the scenery, it seems somewhat 'cheap' to sacrifice the interior of the hangar and use low resoulution textures. I suspect most people would want to taxi into the hangar at some point and some maybe regulalry. Being surrounded by low res textures I think is disappointing. Having said that, I fly regulalry with both the NGX out of big airports in P3D and now GA in MSFS2020, so building a collection of good looking payware GA/bush airports in this new and exciting sim, is on my agenda.

Interesting to see the difference between the default and the payware airports, but I have to say that I would agree with your friend that they aren’t worth it for me. Other than a few airports with my virtual airline, I really don’t fly in and out of the same places all the time. So far the attraction for me in the sim is being able to go anywhere. So it doesn’t matter that much to me if the airport on either end of my journey is just passable rather than a work of art. I would probably visit Bryce Canyon a few times and then explore other parts of the world, maybe only returning very occasionally.

Hi There, great video as usual, very concise, I have purchased many of the airports from Orbx as they are more detailed compared to the originals, but this brings me on to a point that I have come across on forums and on the internet that users cannot seem to grasp or get there head arround and I can't seem to find a video on youtube that I can point them too, so maybe someone reading this could help.
This video clearly shows Bryce Canyon from Orbx and the original Bryce Canyon from Asobo, and the question I see posted the most is that users are seeing aanomalies in both graphics of buildings and performance, I think this comes down to users not knowing weather to delete the asobo version and then install the Orbx version or have them both running at the same time, case in point is a recent Froogle video showing Innsbruck -- title here (MSFS HOW TO: FIX BROKEN SCENERY) he showed how installing a new scenery on top of the original scenery causes problems, now I have found this myself on some newer sceneries but not all, my case in point is YSSY by flyTAMPA, this can be installed and both files can be run together with no problems. But which is the best way to do it, add a new addon airport and delete original, or have both running together, there just does not seem to be a video pointing this out for new comers to the sim, I always delete the Asobo file before adding a newer scenery of the same type, but what do you all think is the best way to do it, I think some clarity needs adding.

    • @SimHangerFS
      @SimHangerFS  Před 3 lety

Hi Jason, my understanding (and this is more an assumption than anything else so I stand to be corrected) is in MSFS if the add on is a DLC based scenery package, and most are, you should install over the top of the Asobo scenery as the scenery is likely to utilise some assets or data from the base files. I have had occasion in P3D and Xplane where I have had to delete the base files, and in FSX it was fairly common occurrence. Regards

This is clearly visible if you look at the London scenery package. Because of the excellent default scenery from MSFS 2020, this was a downgrade, not an enhancement. It was obviously a scam. I will gladly pay for good quality scenery content, but i think the pricing of the scenery and airports should reflect the amount of detail and work put into it. Big international airports like the Suvarnabhumi in Thailand as an example of the should of course be higer than the smaller regional ones etc. In the case of Bryce canyon airport, that one is overpriced. Its priced almost as high as big one. Thats a no go for me. I think The bryce airport should be priced the same as the Key west airport. Thats a fair price. Orbx over priced this one .
