  • ...Something strange has been happening with Adidas lately. And no, I'm not talking about their most popular sneakers being a pair that’s over 70 years old. I mean that they haven’t come up with anything new in a long time.
It's hard to believe anything new will come from them. The last time they made a global splash was with the release of the NMD. These legendary sneakers sold in crazy numbers. The brand exploited the silhouette as much as they could, even giving similar sneakers different names. This included the Iniki and Nite Jogger, among others.
They also released things like the Nightball and other similar models, but these were more of a rehash of old ideas. And now, I come across these Adidas Wonder Runner sneakers. The unique sole is something you’ve probably never seen before.
You can’t figure out how the heel works just from pictures, which is why I bought them, tested them for a week, and now I’m going to sell them. One feature of the Wonder Runner is its completely new silhouette. It's not a reissue or an amalgamation of an old model. It was made from scratch, and it's hard to pinpoint what inspired it. It has cushioning from running or basketball shoes but also features from trail models.
In short, they mixed it up quite a bit. But I think Adidas succeeded in making a very eye-catching shoe. This thing grabs attention on the street; everyone stares at the Wonder Runner. Whether that’s a plus or a minus is up to you, but such a piece in your wardrobe isn’t going to be versatile. They’re definitely not for everyone. But if you were looking for something Solomon-like, surprisingly, Adidas managed to create that.
Now, let's dig deeper, starting with the major fail of this model: the totally impractical upper. It's completely fabric, a type of large nylon weave that’s rough. After just one wear, it got quite dirty, and I couldn't figure out how. No coating can protect it because the texture is too rough. To clean it, you need to machine wash or scrub with a brush and soapy water.
The rubber on the toe is like Hoka’s, tough and holds shape well, so these sneakers aren’t squishy at all. The lacing is similar to the Yeezy 700 V3. It looks interesting, but the laces are a pain. My advice: change the laces immediately because they’ll come undone 700 times a day. Or tie some ugly knots, which isn’t great either.
The breathability is almost nonexistent, so these should only be worn in spring or autumn, and only when it’s dry outside. This severely limits their usability.
Inside, I expected a decent insole but found nothing special. It's the same kind they put in Stan Smiths and other default pairs. It’s embarrassing to even talk about it. The insole is 29 cm long, fitting size 45 1/3 Euro, which is the same as 45 Euro in Adidas sizing. Go half a size smaller for your US size.
Now, onto the most important part: the sole, specifically the heel, which is the most unique part. The entire rear is one of three components of the sole. The front is significantly different, but we'll get to that later. The heel is a plastic monocoque; both the outer cage and the inner base are quite rigid, with the cage being slightly more flexible. Inside is Light Strike foam, second version, very soft but not as good as Boost.
The cushioning is noticeable, though. They could have used Boost, but I'm glad they didn't. Remember the POD 3.1 experiment? Boost in the heel and regular foam in the front felt awkward, with the heel constantly sinking. For comfort, this was a disaster. So, it's better to have soft foam like this.
The front features Adiprene Plus, but not all the foam is Adiprene. People often get this wrong; Adiprene refers to the inserts inside, not the EVA itself. The foam at the back is softer, but the difference isn't huge. And don’t forget the large insert in the heel, which eats into the cushioning.
A big question is how long will this feature last? I noticed wrinkles appearing over time, and since it's plastic, it’s just a matter of time before it cracks. I hope I'm wrong, but judging by its current state, it's only a matter of time before it breaks.
The third part of the platform is the rubber, which serves two purposes: stability and traction. The tread pattern is great for city use, with no complaints.
The big question: how does this construction feel, and is there any benefit from this heel? I can say I expected much worse. Looking at Adidas’ recent experiments, they haven’t been successful. The radically changed Adidas NMD S1s were so different from regular NMDs that I couldn’t wear them; they hurt my feet badly. But the Wonder Runners are not only wearable but quite comfortable.
