In this video tutorial, I show you how to perfectly attach a frosted (foggy, mist) type film to the back of your aquarium.
First of all, I talk about why I use a foggy type background:
- hide wall and cables
- translucent
- more depth
- backlit
- blocks daylight
- glass protection
I show you 4 different types of foggy film and explain the differences between them.
Next, I show you the tools I'm using to attach the foggy film:
- water spray bottle with little soap or glass cleaner
- razor blade
- credit card
- scissors
- towel
Finally, I attach a foggy film to the back of my #60x50x40 aquarium:
- cut the film to approximate size
- clean the glass
- spray the glass and film
- align the film on the top rim
- wipe out the bubbles
- cut at 45° angle to the exact size
- check the corner
And last I answer some of your questions regarding backgrounds:
- black vs white background
- when not to use foggy film
ps: white background with black silikone example is a scape by Lukasz Krzywosz.

Hi, Jurijs. One of the best things about the videos you and George do is that you don’t have a “my way is the only right way” approach. Thanks for that! My tank has black silicone, so I have a black background and a wall of susswassertang covering it. I did watch your entire video, though. It was clear, informative, and entertaining as usual. I think your video has inspired me to cover one of my house windows with this frosty film to block out an ugly shed in my neighbor’s garden. :)
i use the cheapest window film from my diy shop on all my tanks, works great! Great explaination on how to attach the film, adding the water (i add a little soap as well ) works the best for removing the air bubbles
Thanks for the great Tip at the end with Black Background. I was going to try foggy background on my new 240l Tank but was not sure if this will look the way I was hoping for especially since the Aquarium has black Silikon and also a dark (anthrazit) cover, your explanation makes total sense and I´ll stick with black background again!
I went into this video planning to do a white or foggy background but you actually convinced me to use black! I have black silicone and my tank, plants and drift wood are all very tall. Thanks!
BAM! Perfect vid. Black vs foggy is epic
I'm a qualified house painter/decorator and have hung a lot of expensive paper. I would just say that when you use the credit card to take the air out, then always start in the centre and work your way out. And if you had let the film dry first it would have been much simpler to trim the edge without disturbing the positioning. There are also cheap little plastic decorators spatulas that would be more effective than a credit card if you are doing this regularly. Thanks for the video. Very helpful in deciding what I am going to do with my first ever aquarium.
great tips! I will make an updated version at some time in the future and include the "let it dry" tip
Great video Jurijs! Very popular theme. But many worries to use it. Hopefully, they also can fit this easily now. Keep up the good work mate!
Thanks for the video, I didn't realize it was that easy.
Very well explained! You are becoming a pro behind cameras ;)
Very helpful video! The one time I tried to apply a foggy film it was a total disaster. The film had adhesive on it, and I didn't spray the glass enough. The adhesive stuck on contact and I couldn't press out the bubbles. Then when I tried to remove the film, it left a residue that took days to scrub off! This video might give me enough confidence to try again haha.
If i see this video one day back I would not have destroyed my frosted film :D gonna give a try again! Thanx mate!
Another great tip and tutorial I am going to follow for my new set up. Thank you
How did I miss this video?? Very informative.. cleared all my doubts
Great video, I like how you present your content. Also now I can hide the hang on back on my filter.
you welcome, for the HOB filter you better use black film
Like that you can add lighting behind the background👌🏻 that’s never been a option for me as I usually use black backgrounds on my tanks. Another quality video Jurijs, thanks for uploading👍🏻🌱
I have the foggy film background on my 36 gallon bow front aquarium, then I also applied a frosted very light blue background on top of it for a very faint blue color.
beautiful tank!
Hi Jurijs! Nice content. There's not much videos like this. Love the oceanario card :p
Awesome vid!
great video
Perfect
Great information. I don't use backgrounds, my walls were painted with aquariums in mind
@@JurijsJutjajevs I went purple, dark enough to allow green and red plants to pop. I have also found my fish color up better as they are not trying to blend into a bright background.
Nobody cares
@@SupTJay you cared enough to Comment.
Thank you so much, Jurijs. Your explanation is perfect and very informative. Black vs white foggy background was a question that I had but you have covered that also fully. Well done and keep up the good work. Above all, I love all your aquascape ideas.
thank you
Nice tutorial like always! From my expirience if you could wait till soap solution vaporate it is super easy to make perfect cut. Keeping that in mind I usually align bottom as close as possible and after 24h+ trim excess.
@@JurijsJutjajevs one small note I forget to mention - if you leave excess too long it may detach by gravity. I tested that 0.5-1cm (1/4-1/2inch) works best. Advantage is that firmly stickied background won't slip under knife so cut can be strigth as your glass w/o playing too much with proper cut angle etc.
I'm using the same scissors as you. Exactly the same 😂😂
Very good video :-)
I've always used black backgrounds, I find it enhance the colors of my fish. Most recently I've been using vinyl like yours rather than painting. I've yet to find a complete black product, so have been using window tint which does black out the back but I would still rather use something that is completely black. I enjoyed your video thanks for sharing
@@JurijsJutjajevs great I'll check both of them out, thanks.
Hi jurijs I use a black background my filter inlet and outlet tubes are black so it makes them disappear great video
Ayeee thats me. Good video btw!
Thanks again. I did one but got bubbles before. But I think I used water instead of an adhesive soap made for this. This makes me wanna give it another go lol. Thanks!
Thxs! Now I recognised my mistake. I used pure water with d-c fix static film and the water will not go away entirely. It looks misty not foggy at all.
Did you make the bar that supports your light? I need that to support my lighting.
Very nicely described Juris...Just to add one more important point...In dark background tanks, the fish tends to adapt vibrant and distinguished colors as compared to the light or no background tanks. So Fish colors are very crisp and well defined in dark backgrounds. Its a little kind of an edge one will get in black or any dark color background.
yes black is great for contrast, which is reason most screens have black bezels
Not for discus fish (the pidgeon blood ones). They will "pepper" in effort to blend in the black background.
Nice ! frozen one is da best. can u go a litel bit ahead with showing how to put the light under glass ? for a sunrise effet. please.
Jurijs, When do you advise for a frosted, clear or black background? Regards, Nico
Hello Juris,
Those are sandblasted vinyls and they are very nice but i think their glue is too strong to remove them afterwards. I am not talking about ADA because ada has specific measurements but for sandblasted vinyls from any dedicated shop. Do you have any experience of removing those?
Will the suction cups from lily pipes still stick?
Idk y but this music matches his voice 😍😍
thanks for pointing this out, Logan does a great job picking the music
@@JurijsJutjajevs didn't thought that ull reply 😶👀
Perfect timing I’m just about to redo my frosted film today because I got some dirt trapped under the first time.
Where do you get your film from?
Soki Hagiwara Amazon
Hey Jurijs. I am all new to aquascaping. I have built a 5 feet long tank and I am having difficulty choosing a background. Tank is near a white wall. What’d you think would be the best choice? Black? White? Or transparency?
I use white frosted mylar film. I apply small round double sided sticky discs to all 4 corners of the film. The adhesive discs are transparent and repositionable which allows me to remove and clean the outside back wall of the tank when needed.
@@JurijsJutjajevs I agree. For a new tank installation your method is best. For background installation on an existing tank without a lot of room behind it the method I mentioned works well. You can have very little space to work with and slide the film into place. The fact that it’s repositionable helps. The hardest part is locating the white frosted mylar film, some architectural drafting supply stores carry it. It's available in rolls too so that you can cut it to size as needed.
Thanks for your content mate. Unfortunately I’m still lost at what decision to make. My scape could look good either way but which way will look better.... I’ll try both. Thanks again
I’ve always done black. But I’ve tired of it. I like the back lighting that’s now available and you need fog. Mine is painted and I can’t change it without a big ordeal. It’s a large tank. But if I had a chance again I’d do something I could easily get to and “undo” if you change your mind.
Nice fish tank! What substrate is in the tank?
For bright and open scapes I like foggy. For darker scapes like black water scenes, I like black backgrounds. I feel both add depth when used properly.
agree, black works well with tinted water
Im in love with
The beginning video clips for you ❤️😅😅😅

Hi
Ian getting a 60x24x18 tank and Ian going to keep Malawi fish what is the best colour silicone to have on the tank and best background. I have heard clear goes mouldy and discoloured can you help.
I want to increase the brightness of my planted aquarium. Do you think an opaque white background makes a difference ?
First lol ! Still watching !👍😀
Excellent video Brother !👍😀 Frosted Background is better than Black Background.👍😀 Great tutorial.👍😀
what if the wall color is not white, will it still look good using the frosted background for the aquarium?
my wall is like brown color
Used to use black backgrounds but now only white frosted as it blends the appearance of CO2 mist much better.
I do prefer the black backround, as it seams a lot more "natural" (to me). Under water nothing is really white :)
What about dark blue/ soft green backgrounds ?
Like your video. I want to make the background of my 10 gallon tank look like a sunset (bluish, grey) hardscape silhouette. Do I need to purchase light blue foggy background or use special lighting with the standard white/grey foggy background?
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks. Keep up the good work!
Are the ones from amazon good ??
What about the sides? Should you do them also?
Accidentally foggy films the front and back😂
some shops do it with their IAPLC scapes to prevent visitors taking pictures
hy jurijs what background do you recommend for an aquarium with bonsai .... ada foggy or ada clear blue? .... thank you!
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanck's :)
I want to get a frosted background now .-.
American viewer here... foggy film lol! gets me every time he says it.
lol, what would you call it?
@@JurijsJutjajevs I suppose it would probably sound just as funny to you, I have always know it as frosted window film.
My crush 😍
Hello,
I jave a 72 by 25 inch aquarium and, apparently, The AD Aqua Screen Foggy does not come in that size. Short on spending hundreds of dollars on the screen, is there any affordable alternative in the above size that you would recommend? Thanks.
The foggy film is the best in my opinion. Black is just wrong in a planted tank.
JURIJS: right now i am trying an aluminum foil background. i crinkled the piece so wave marks are throughout the piece and then flatten it and apply to the glass. i do have the black rims on the aquarium to attach the metal with tape. i like your shows very much. regards, carmine p.
@@JurijsJutjajevs : i don't have a system for photos through my computer or a cell phone. what the aluminum does is refracts light into the aquarium from behind increasing light for plants. it has creases that kind of fools one's eyes to think there is more depth and has a grey tone here and there. regards, carmine p.
Im going to try it with clear silicone frameless. Sounds cool. Probably could combine with opaque at the bottom and foil at the top, blending for an affect like the surface of the water is just above. 🌝
Can i use solar film for my fish tank background instead? All my local fishstore's background sticker have some kind of plant drawings on it.
Yes you can use any film you like
Thankyou for the reply! Sorry for not replying back was caught up with something.
I am using sand blast glass film, very cheap
I have just a regular black background but my tank gets a crazy glare when sunlight comes in. will the foggy background help with a glare?
White will be brighter, but the mirror effect will be gone. I don’t know if it will help with your glare issue
Hmm I tried like you showed. But after 3h it dried and fell off. What went wrong?
I got one today but it seems too granular, I can see the grains kind of. Will it still work?
You can try, if it has a sticky side, it should work
How to apply it after the tank already set up?
This is the second time I have applied the film and I did not use any soap in the water because I did not want to accidentally get it in the tank . There are what appear to be a lot of wet spots but no matter how hard I try to remove with he squeegee they don't go away. I am hoping that they just dry. If not I am going to reapply with soapy water and see if that works better.
The soapy water helps squeeze out bubbles, but little moisture always remains and will dry out depending on the material you use. So if yours doesn’t dry out, use different brand frosting film
@@JurijsJutjajevs Thanks buddy. I re did it with soapy water and got all the bubbles out. Then there was just a little bit of teeny tiny bubbles and they have since dried out. I mounted a back lite LED on it and it looks freaking amazing!
Cool, glad it has worked out for you! 😁
Hi jurjis should i use pure frosted or white frosted? which one is better
I guess pure frosted is more opaque than white frosted.
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks :)
What would you recommend for a hardscape only tank with gray slate stone and manzanita drift wood? Oh and light tan sand? Your word is Law!
based on silicone seal. transparent silicone ► frost film. Black silicone ► black film
Can you please make an ADA Light Screen DIY?
I can, maybe I will
@@JurijsJutjajevs Thanks
You can use DIYPerks old LED TV screen method to make a light screen with an dimmer.
I have black silicon but want foggy film :'(
Yes frosted gives lot more depth
Foggy white: you will see anything on the back.
Black: high contrast and sensation of limit
Can anyone tell me What is the aquarium tank glass he is using here ?
Clear white glass
@@JurijsJutjajevs yea but what is the company of the Aquarium glass? I was looking to buying similar used in this video. It looks thick and good.
What about white backgrounds?
plane white are like black - they show exactly where the end of the aquarium is and they also show every little dirt on the back glass.
You look like a fit guy. What is your workout routine?
OriginalMindTrick lifting buckets during water changes
Is this stuff easy to remove?
yes its easy to remove
@@JurijsJutjajevs thanks
I’m going to paint my glass frosted. The wrap was too expensive.
Jurijs Jutjajevs in next day or
two I will being do this. I’m going to tape up the aquarium so no overspray gets into it. Going to use rust-oleum frosted glass. I’ll probably have to do a few coats to get the look I want.
Can’t you buy frosted background for like showers and such for far cheaper than the ADA brand? A lot of the ADA brand stuff is insanely overpriced. I just got the same glass intake and outflow pipes from another site for 1/3 of them cost
there is huge quality difference between high grade frosted background (doesn't have to be ADA) and the cheap one for ie "bathroom". You can try the cheaper ones and see if you like it
@@JurijsJutjajevs ok that’s what I was wondering. Do you know other providers other than ADA that have frosted backgrounds?
other than to piss people off, is there any other reason you keep switching between two cameras back and forth all the time?
Nah, Juris! Don't feel sorry. Each to their own. Trolls live all over the internet I guess.😀
trolls? legit question

Why do you keep changing the camera angles constantly.
I dont even speak dutch i dont understand the store language.
100 Euro for a square metre - ridiculous! Great video though.
Fair enough! Its used for car wrapping and this kind of stuff. Really sturdy and UV proof
