Heaven is not a reward for me being wonderful in life or for you doing incredible things or something like that, it is a gift that God is offering us, he is offering us the chance to live with him as part of his family and heaven is simply his household. So, all God is saying is if he offers us this gift and we turn him down then he will not force it on us, but that will leave us in hell, hell simply being the cold and the dark without the creator.
