In this video coach John Shepherd (www.johnshepherdfitness.com/blog) provides an overview of a recent session that elite Brazilian coach Nelio Moura took whilst visiting the UK. In the video Nelio showcases some of the plyometric exercises he uses with his athletes. To give you some background Nelio coached the men's and women's Olympic long jump champions in 2008 - Irving Saladino and Maureen Maggi. He currently works with other elite athletes, including those from China.
In the video you will see progressions of plyometrics from the warm-up through to drop and block jumps and hurdles jumps and box jumps (drop jump variants).
At the end of the video (circa 7.30min) Nelio talks a little bit about developing power with weights exercises and showcases an app which can measure optimum power output, in this case for the jump squat.

John, great video. Looking forward to the next in the series with takeoff.
BTW - can you help in explaining the mechanism of the horizontal bound off a drop from the box? How does that help in overloading the horizontal vector?

The drill actually improve vertical velocity potential by overloading the eccentric aspect of the take-off. The jumper therefore has to overcome more braking force before they can power forward and up ... everything else being equal the jumper with the higher vertical velocity at take-off will be the one who jumps the furthest for the long jump in particular .. To really get the benefits the drill can be performed with a run on. Hope that makes sense and thanks for the comment.

I was wondering what time (range) top long jumpers have in 100m sprint or 50m? What times your athletes got in average from your experience? And if to look on the training plans for jumpers (triple, single long) how many time spending on sprinting specific training (free runs, accelerations, etc.) vs. jump specific, what is the ratios or percentages? Thank you.

That's a difficult question to answer succinctly - without writing an essay here! I have however covered much of your question in the past in videos and may revisit this question in another. This video specifically looks at speed and long jump performance - czcams.com/video/U3BPi9-ZJO8/video.html My training always includes some element of sprint and jump work all year round. Not always at 100% but above 80% and very few runs in excess of 120m. Take off and acceleration work for example is started from the first week or so of training. As mentioned I will look at producing a video on this question soon. Thanks and stay safe.
