Definitely agree on trying new techniques with each project. It's a great way to improve and also keep things fresh and interesting in your process.

I find that building up to working on a important mini like an important character in a 40k army by doing projects that are similar but less important helps with making the final project look better. For example, I have a Space Marine Captain built and primed, but before painting it I painted 5 troops in the same colors I want to use for the Captain, with some unhelmeted models since the Captain won't be wearing a helmet. This way I not only get my projects done, but I use my projects as practice for future projects.

That is definitely a solid approach. It's good to make sure you are happy with the main scheme before moving onto charecters.

Currently getting back into the hobby after a long long stint away from it. Getting to the point of painting everyday has been my biggest struggle so far. I have no excuse for it, I certainly have the time, it's just a case of getting myself motivated. Hearing it from people on the internet actually does help so thank you :D
