I thought I read somewhere that Valve actually doesn't like trilogies unless they're positive they can be justified, so they prefer to end at two.

@@psychologisttotheastartes905 I both agree and don't. I mean, I get why that makes more sense for Half-Life than their other franchises. But Valve is pretty awesome at world-building. You could justify telling more story in any of their worlds and I'd be there for it. Also, to be fair, when they said "a third was planned" it sounds like they meant a third HL2 episode rather than an entire third game. If they released either, I'd welcome it. But if they didn't, I think it'll be fun to see what world they think up next.
Man I remember there was this other Bioware game that looked awesome. You got to fly around in a suit of armor and just really live out your Iron Man power fantasy. And because it was Bioware it surely would have had a lot of interesting and deep interpersonal relationships that helped drive a carefully crafted narrative. Pretty sure the game was called Anthem.
Sad that we never got to play that game.

That Iron Man VR game was surprisingly good. You got to customize your own armour and its weapons then send it on a surprisingly nice story. It was simple, short but fun and well thought out.
Except for the part where they spoiled the end of the game in the starting cutscene, less thought that part

You got a set of armor that you could customize the color patterns, it's weapon and repulser types, and if it what type of flying it was more geared toward. You got to customize nearly all of the armor and make it something geared to how you wanted it to be.
Mine had the ability to fire 13 missiles at once
God the Jade Empire music still gives me goosebumps.
I would like to submit Starcraft: Ghost for consideration as an Honorable Mention, largely because it's a game I'll never get to play... again!
I legit managed to play an early build of it at Gen Con 2006! For what it was at the time, it was a damn good game and I was super pumped for it! My disappointment is immeasurable that it never came out.
At this point, VTM Bloodlines 2 is one of them, too.

I’d love to see a Mike Special on quirky/beloved cabinet arcade games.

If you want quirky and fun arcade games, I suggest Avenging Spirit. You play as a ghost who must take down an evil enemy empire and rescue a kidnapped girl...by possessing enemies and using their powersets as your own. Between the difficulty level, themes, and controls...I think it would be best compared to a hybrid between Kirby's Adventure, Rolling Thunder, and classic Shinobi. As a side note, it also has unusually good music for a classic arcade game.
I wonder how many great games have been canceled over the last 20 years? Jade empire… What a game! A sequel would’ve been nice.

How about a list for cancelled games that we did get to play, sort of, because they were reworked into entirely new projects?
For example the Little Nightmares series used ideas from a cancelled Tarsier studios title called "City of Metronome", a game that was set for launch on the 7th generation line of consoles

I really like Jade Empire, would be great to see a remake or a remaster.
There was supposed to be a game called Darkborn where we played as a viking murdering monster, but was ultimately canceled
Given how attached to the PRC market all the big studios are these days, I'm shocked that EA hasn't forced Bioware to shove out a new Jade Empire property with only half the dev time necessary to make it actually good.
I don't know if they had any games planned - but I'll always be sad Westwood Studios died a death. They made easily the best strategy games out there - and nothing has really hit the same spot ever since. I grew up with their Dune series - and ofc C&C.
And the Lands of Lore series! The first one is a classic, the second not so much, but LOL3 was also an excellent game in many ways despite having some troublesome bugs. With a bit more polish it could've been a big hit.
You might like to know that there’s some free remasters of a lot of those games out there too :)
Man I loved Westwood studios, but I was in it for the point and click adventures, and I was sad when they went all in on RTS. If they hadn't, they probably would have evolved into an elite RPG developer like bioware and not got out of business.
One of the screenshots from Revolver had a symbol that reminded me of the Fire Nation, and now I'm just thinking, "an open-world game set in the Avatar Universe years after Korra."
A couple of games i always wanted to see completes, there was Star Trek: The Secret of Vulcan Fury, an Action Adventure which was the last time the entire Original series cast recorded together and was meant to come out in the late-90's and Babylon 5: Into the Fire which was a Space Sim and also featured full video scenes of the Cast of Babylon 5, that was was cancelled only months shy of release
I would have played the Star Trek one simply for the entire original cast being in it. I love The Original Series so much. I've tried to watch TNG, but I just can't get into it.
I ran a Save Secret of Vulcan Fury website back when it was first cancelled. I had gotten some cool but obviously unverified info from folks claiming to be at Interplay. Some of it was actually verified later. The scope changed a lot during development. Starting with 6-8 Episodes, which I was told was pared down to 4. This bit was later confirmed in a article on some video game website I have since forgotten. They were supposed to be as follows:
One would follow McCoy on an almost Quincy-like murder mystery
One would follow Scotty in an Enterprise Out-of-Control story(Into was shown in one of the trailers)
One would follow Spock on Vulcan and players would experience a mind-meld
And one would follow Kirk, Spock, and Chekov in a race to stop an assassination
The last bit of news that was never verified is kind of a bummer. DeForest Kelley died around the time the game was being made, and I was told he either never recorded or never completed his V.O. for the game. That Maurice LeMarche recorded for McCoy instead. Even though I never saw it verified, it came from someone who sent me some other tidbits that were later verified, so I was inclined to believe it.
There was a really good Babylon 5 fan made game called I've Found Her. Not sure if you can still download it anywhere these days, but if memory serves it was pretty amazing for being a completely fan made game.
@@SolaScientia Check out the 25th Anniversary Game and its sequel Judgement Rites. I'm guessing Vulcan Fury would have been the third game in that series.
@@JohnWilliams-cr2sz Back in the day i founded the group that did the Freespace 2 Mod 'The Babylon Project' was a lot of great B5 mods came out of the death of Into the Fire, but would still have loved the original
Thanks for reminding me of Bioware's good old days over the beautifully melancholic Jade empire theme, now I want both to cry over what we've lost and rejoice in all the games they made that we can still replay. And just when I'm currently replaying DA origins, incidentally.
8:55 Hey, from what I've seen of Motive's Dead Space Remake, an Ironman game will absolutely be worth the wait.

A few Star Wars games to add:
- Republic Commando 2
- Knights of the old Republic 3
- Star Wars: Empire at War 2 (but I think it might now be in development?)
I also remember the studio behind LA Noire, Team Bondi, was developing another open world game where you play a cop and even that cancellation made me sad!

The Ironman tie-in game for the PS2 was amazing. It was like ace combat, you would use machine guns, repulsors, and missiles while hovering and flying all over the maps. Such a shame people drag it through the mud because it's a movie tie-in game.
A melee focused Ironman game honestly sounds less impressive in comparison. And wasn't that how the Avengers game made Ironman.
i actually own a PC port of that Iron Man game.

It would’ve been a gritty SW game from the perspective of a bounty hunter. Some game reviewers said it would’ve been similar to uncharted, too.

1313 even sparked an attempt of making a fan made version from scratch. With questioning Lucasfilm regarding licensing problems etc. I don’t know what happened to them though. Last I heard of they weren’t allowed to use anything of the Star Wars IP. They tried to come up with new character models but I lost interest and now I can’t find anything about them anymore.

I remember getting splinter cell on PC decades ago. It may have been the first splinter cell game, but either way it was incredible!

@@supervegito2277 Yes indeed! THE days is right! I think 60% of my fondest gaming memories came from the late 90s early 2000s. I’ve got some games and I wish I could play them with a passion! I have an older PC and I was getting games like Carmageddon 2, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, hacker, Robin Hood: defender of the crown, and some others. Then my power supply went. I’ve got to get that fixed!

If you want to know more about Revolver : Mark Darrah, a former Bioware producer, has a youtube channel (called Mark Darrah on Games) where he speak about game dev. As part of this channel he's doing videos about each project he worked at Bioware including one about Revolver.
As someone who adores Jade Empire, hearing about Revolver hurt my soul so much. God I would have loved to have seen that find the light of day.

A promising game from my childhood was Freespace 3. Decent: Freespace and Freespace 2 were some fantastic space shooters, and there was an advert for Freespace 3 on the second game's box, but nothing came of it.
They weren't the most amazing titles ever, but the nostalgia takes me back to them on occasion and they hold up well enough for late 90s action.
Well, we got the Blue Planet mod, but that too is incomplete.
Also, FS3 might hurt the nice ambiguity of FS2 in my opinion.

@@michaelandreipalon359 it's been ages since I've revisited, but fs2 ended with the Sathanas fleet warping away to some random place, right? There's still plenty of exploration to do in the universe. Some new Shivan machinations to discover and foil. Some human-vasudan war to brew.

Anyways, hope you revisit it via the Open/Source Code Project community and their mods.
I can’t remember the title but it was a game that lets you have this massive pet dragon that you could command and helps you fight. You could even transform into matching dragon armor. The MC looked like a short haired Dante from devil may cry and there was suppose to be some open world and multiplayer. You could even customize your dragons. It ended up getting cancelled because it was “too ambitious”.

Coming from someone who isn't even into Splinter Cell games, I think that a VR version of that would've been awesome. I'm sure the fans of the game would've loved it.

To be fair, Arkane DID make an excellent first-person atmospheric somewhat-horror game with zombies, called Dishonored. From the sound of how artistically boxed in the Half-Life episode would've been, I think they pulled something amazing out of such a big disappointment.

There's a theme, and I'm speaking from experience as a hobbyist game dev, people do NOT work for zero returns. When the amount of effort outweighs any reward - tangible AND intangible combined - that's when projects become frozen and unfinished for all time.

I’m really sad that project ragtag was cancelled. I’m a big fan of Star Wars and single player games so I would’ve love to have played it
I only saw the bits in this video but it made me think of Firefly/ Serenity.
Hard to be sad about it! Cause they gave the design brief of Ragtag to Respawn... they looked at it and said "No Jedi rule was dumb" and made Jedi Fallen Order
Honestly being cancelled is better than them becoming something like Duke Nukem Forever, though I still wish some of them would be revived in some way (especially stuff that already had concept art to work from).
The 10th Planet was a game that I was interested in back in HS.
"On the face of it this is a great idea" - except the bit where it was going to be an Oculus exclusive in a sector that's already small and way too fractured.

Late to the party, but Bioware's Baldur's Gate 3 (which was titled Black Hound). Black Isle's Fallout 3 ("Van Buren"). Mercenaries 3! Megaman Legends 3! C'mon, you've got a few to go with.
It's not a full game, but I've always been sad that the second wave of DLC for Final Fantasy 15 never got released. It would have let you play as Aranea and Lunafreya, as well as show the true ending of the game. Sadly, all we got was a light novel which tells the real ending.
Pretty similar to Mass Effect: Andromeda. There was DLC planned that would feature the Quarian ark, but the game bombed, and the story only got told in a (pretty good) tie-in novel.

Until recently I didn't even know about Revolver, but it really sucks that it never came to pass. I'd really like a new game in the Jade Empire.

I had to make sure you hadn't covered it in the first video. Does anyone else remember when StarCraft: Ghost was going to be a thing? First person Kerrigan running around Zerg infested... EVERTYTHING.
I played iron man believe or not, it was on PS2 at the time. Fun and really gave you the experience of playing iron man, I wondered what happened to the game and now I know.
Any and all criticism Fish received was entirely justified and he mostly brought it on himself.
Let's be real though, a project ragtag that has "pivoted" to "take into the market into account" would've been a Marvel's Avengers clone with a Star Wars skin

Let's add an old game that never came to be, though we would wanted it so much: Babylon 5: Into the Fire. I remember seeing the demo for it at GenCon 1999. They actually used models from the original TV show and removed enough polygons to let it play on machines of the time. Sunk by company politics.

Here I was thinking the video was going to be about games that can't be played anymore. MMOs or other live service games that never got an update to let them play offline.
I got really excited when that Rainbow Six bridge shooting video was released. Sadly it turned into Siege. I guess we will never have another single player one.

Splinter Cell VR being a Quest exclusive would have been a waste anyway. Hopefully if it ever comes back it goes to a platform that can offer better realism, like PS VR2 or Steam. Games on Quest 2 look like high definition PlayStation 2 games. I have fun on it, but I'm ready to move on to better, and hyped for the PS VR2 to come out.
If you decide to make another list of games like this, you might consider that Eternal Darkness almost got a spiritual sequel called "Shadow of the Eternals." I desperately wish it could have been made. Sadly the folks who ran Silicon Knights seem to have been massive conmen who burned all their bridges in the industry, so...yeah...
1:40 there's a good VR game I know of that isn't too well known and it's called Swordsman VR, y'all should check it out
If it makes you feel any better who knows how many things we love were able to be made because these were cancelled, the world works in mysterious ways
Also, Knight of the Old Republic 3 was canceled (it continued through a mmo later, but it doesn’t have the same feel).
I worry that "Beyond Good and Evil 2" will eventually be on one of these lists.
When they started talking about how the game was going to work, I instantly thought, "There's no way they accomplish that." Overly ambitious is a good way to describe BG&E 2.
@@Fools_Requiem - At this point, I'd just be satisfied with a fun game that gets released.. I loved the first game mostly for the story and characters. If they can retain that charm, then it wouldn't have to be some mind-blowing trail-blazing thing.

Prey 2 will forever be the game I desperately want to play. I loved the reboot from Arkane, but I wish we were in a timeline where we got both. It looked incredible and stylistic, and I'm honestly shocked no other studio tried to make something like it with how many fans were upset at it's cancellation.
Let's not forget about Demonik that even had a whole Adam Sandler movie to promote it.
Seeing both Jason Schreier and MinnMax credited here made my day!

Project Ragtag “After closely tracking fundamental shifts of in marketplace … need to pivot”. Translation: EA couldn’t fit lootboxes/micro transactions into the game and Visceral couldn’t/didn’t want to, so EA killed the game then the studio.
the game that i wanted to come out, more than anything, was megaman legends 3. poor mr. vollnut is still stuck on that distant planet some 20 years later.

I want a new Star Control game..I remember playing hours and hours of Star Control II on Panasonic 3DO and before that Starlight on the Sega Genesis (Similar Games)
Are you aware of _Star Control Origins?_ Completely different people, and rights arguments (since patched up, at least publicly,) and set in a different universe.
On the other hand, it's a bit over four years old at this point, so maybe it doesn't count as 'new.' And, since Toys for Bob weren't involved, it's claim to the name "Star Control" is arguable, even if Stardock does own the IP.
The picture for Project Ragtag looks like my Starfinder party.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned looked like it could have been fun. Shame Disney cancelled it.

I am still sad about the Hajime no Ippo boxing game they never finished. There is some footage of it floating around and it shaped up to be awesome but it just kinda petered out and never got released.
Megaman legends 3 was the most anticipated game for me when I was growing up. They had fans building the story and characters it looked awesome. Unfortunately it was canceled by Capcom with a few years of development 😕
