Pro Steam Engineer Plays Derail Valley!

- In this video, we shift to Derail Valley, a game that I love and haven't played in around a year or so. I talk about what I like and don't like about their steam engine, and rush to get a job done within the bonus time! I did realize after that I had a mod I didn't realize I installed that changed some stuff on the steam engine. Let me know if you'd like to see more!
If you look at the job card before actually taking the job, the top right gives an identification for the job, in the case of the scrap metal the card said: "HB-FH-98". That same identification is shown on the white card attached to the side of all the cards so if the identification on the job matches that of the cars then you can know before taking the job exactly which cars the job is referring too
That's a helpful tip! I usually just hoped the car counts were right and went based on that, but it's only failed me once... now I've got the real tip! Cheers :)
Ooh. I'm taking that tip. Preparing super long trains will be so much nicer with that in order to get the speed bonuses.
Also the job name gives you an idea of what kind of job it is (if you are just looking at the cars panel), in this example HB-FH-98 it stands for HarBour FreightHaul
best line "i didn't blow you, get out of here". Sure gave me a chuckle

@@F40M07 thanks for the time stamp
You’re welcome!
This should be a blast
Many trains will ES&D
LOL!
Highly recommend the “Realistic Steam Overhaul” mod, it improves lots of issues with the physics and coal/water consumption. Honestly makes the steam engine playable. Actually learning the route and trying to fire properly is a lot of fun. Never had the opportunity to run a steamer IRL, definitely a bucket list item though. I’d love to see more DV steam action from a true professional!
just bought the game. thanks for tip.
"Give it the beans" = new favorite phrase that I may or may not try using on the railroad.
The "oh dear God," moment. My new favorite line. I see that a lot in stormworks being a naval architect, I take one look at most creations and am like, 'that's not how they do it. This for the life of itself wouldn't be declared seaworthy.'
I know this is a weird thing to say on as a random on a CZcams comment thread two years later, but now I wish there was an easy way to show you my Stormworks stuff.
One of my two Steam workshop postings is a ship hull. (Incidentally the other is a railway passenger carriage.)
The large handle on the floor right of the boiler opens the draft for the firebox. on the manifold on the left is a valve for forced air induction when stationary.
Adding realistic coal/wood consume should maybe be a gamesetting or worldsetting wich the host can select. I would love to see this in the game wich would also make RRo much more special against other RR games
I like how the whole cab gets on fire if you look at it from the wrong angle (which seems to be 99% of them?)
Hey Hyce! I got my YT start playing RRO as realistic as I could. While grinding trains there, I decided to keep the content rollin by playing this game. Glad to see you on DV! While this loco is more 'realistic' than RRO locos, it does have a lot of work to go, I agree. I did learn so much about this game just by watching you, like hooking up to the train BEFORE accepting the job (subscriber informed me of that), and jumping out to see the train from the exterior. Never considered that one before.
Anyway, glad to see you pick this up and show us what is wrong and what is right with this game and this choo-choo. I certainly appreciate it!
Having never seen this game before watching man jump out of the train was absurd to imagine before he just teleports away from it
*By my understanding,* chains and knuckles each have their own advantages.
Back in the days of poor quality rolling stock with a lot of resistance, you could couple chains looser than a knuckle to make starting easier.
And while a knuckle is quick to use, that also makes it easier to be irresponsible while shunting - leaving a moving engine unattended with the dead man's switch disconnected, stuff like that.
Seems reasonable enough. I don't know enough about the chains and buffers myself. Need to learn more.
We use them a lot over here in Europe, at least in freight trains.
"Bar" for pressure is the normal thing all over Europe except for the UK.
I'm also a rl train engineer (also operating steam engines for museums) I'm wondering how you're handling speed limits. Doing this here you'd be off the job on the first day because of surveillance and safety measures. ;-)
Btw: The steam locomotives I opperate are operated with 14-16 bars normally, that should equal about 200-230 psi (guess that's your scale for pressures).
Edit: I stumbled over this because of Kan's stuff and I also tried to contact him, talking about some engineers stuff, answering some questions he had, but I guess he didn't watch my email with all the text and the charts I provided. If you're interessted don't hesitate to contact me.
Cheers mate :) the whole point of derail valley is breaking the rules... Right? Hahaha.
Just saying, the whistle echo mechanics are very good.
Hint hint, Mark… :) I’m sure you’ve got something up your sleeve already
It's the crossover we've been anticipating for eons!
I've been waiting for a hyper-realistic steam locomotive experience. I can't wait to see what you guys do with railroads.
Also for those that don't know, you can turn the turn tables by hand by pushing on the metal handle sticking out on either side
oh really? I always thought you had to go in the hut
You could definitely do something like a difficulty level that determines the amount of realism the game has. Like level one could be everything's automatic to level, 10? Where you have to do everything yourself - like the fire loading, maintenance, loading (log by log), etc where it would be way better to have atleast 2 people
This video was incredible, especially compared to Kan's timid first run. I would love to see more.
I'd want to say to add an option for railroads. If you're single player. Use the same mechanic as DV. More than 1 player you can have it where when you step close to the firebox door with a shovel it moves you into a sorta cut scene that you can still move but the shovel follows the mouse. Left click. Tilt left/throw left. Right click. Tilt right/throw right. And the shovel has momentum when you move it fast enough
Nice video and stories, love the part when you point at different controls and say 'this is not coorect, it is actually like ...'. Nice chunk of tehnical stuff, looking forward to more :)
Answering your question at 34:24 1 bar is a metric pressure unit, it is not exacly standard unit (SI) but it is short representation for 100 000 Pascals, which roughly equals to atmospheric pressure or ~14,5 psi. I think most countries outside NA are using SI unit system ;)
You're quite right, I always thought that they would've used Pascals of some flavor as in engineering land (not the train driving kind) we talk about pressures and stresses in MPa or GPa. Bar was not something I was terribly familiar with.
Ah the game I wish had multiplayer. Kinda the reason I also got RR Online.
Whats RR Online?
@@bobbybrisk643Railroads Online
Really fed 'er ALL the onions out the yard. Nice.
I really do enjoy learning about things like steam locos and you being an engineer on one and talking about them is perfect for itching the nerd scratch. Please do get technical!
Shunting can be very good. After you did the shunting job there will be a follow up job. This follow up job often has a bigger income compared to a standard generated job. And ithink it is cool to load a train, take it to the next station with the next job, then with the next job unload it and with the last job bring the cars beck to where they came from. ^^
Maybe for the coal firing in RRO; you can use a mouse-contextual-directional system, similar how PVP swordfightey games like Mordhau or Kingdom Come Deliverance translate your mouse movements to directional sword swings.
May be a little tricky to implement, but seeing as it’s been done in those games, I think it wouldn’t be too hard to implement and it would definitely be more immersive and better than a minigame.
I'm going to have to study up on those I suppose :)
thinking about wood firing, it doesn't seem like you'd need to do all that much more work for something fairly robust. You can already change where you throw the wood in. just need to add collision to the inside of the firebox, give the wood some more physics and implement some system for detecting how much wood is where. Hook that up to how steam is generated and bob's your uncle. Easier to say than do of course, but a bit of that work is done already, and its a lot less than you'd need for coal firing.
@@MK.5198 Indeed, but the nuance comes in when you start playing with that many collisions in multiplayer... where does the collision get calculated? how does that work? etc. - can get kind of nuanced. We'll see. Great idea though.
@@Hyce777 Assuming anticheat isn't a concern, couldn't you consider the firebox throws a constrained system that can be calculated locally and the result sent to the server? Clobbering your engineer with firewood/a shovel doesn't seem like a priority to me.
My gut feeling is a minimum viable product with a simple five regions (front left, right, middle, back left, right) based on angle and force of the swipe or even regions of the open firebox door would code up faster and let you and the team try out the mechanic before worrying about building in a whole new physics simulation. Hacky but expedient placeholder.
would have been cool if the caboose was on the back of the train that would have been real old school stuff right there.
The little squeak when the cars hit eachother was hilarious. And you're not even in VR, so you don't even have that excuse. XP
Life's hard, mkay
I love the way you thought about popping the coupler hoses to stop the train. Doing the same all the time. Or, on very long trains, I ride the last car and do the braking with the valve there to precision position the rear part of a train into the target track. Scrap to B3I at the steel mill always runs last from harbour. Just get into the track, stop, and then triple C: cut the cars off, cash in, carry on. Multiple jobs in one train are always fun and make big money.
That is precisely how I like to play it too! One of my favorite things.
You might want to look into Zeibach's cutoff, realism, and air brake mods.
Cutoff in particular massively reduces the rate at which you generate and consume steam. (a cold start on the 282 can take 20min or more)
Air brake mod makes the 282's brake (not sure about the diesels) work like a lapping brake system. (not sure what the technical term is)
Realism mod makes it so you need to set switches properly or else they will break.
That seems to address most of your complaints I saw in this episode.
Ooooh! Well that does sound interesting. You're thinking of "non-self-lapping" brake. The current brakes are self-lapping.
@@Hyce777 Zeibach's cutoff mod makes a lot of things about the 282 a lot more realistic as well. As you might gather from the name, it makes the reverser function realistically in terms of steam efficiency, as well as needing to set it high to move from a dead stop and even simulating the traction dipping and raising at very low speeds as the pistons run through their cycle. IIRC I think it also makes the steamer a bit more powerful than the diesel for gameplay reasons, so that there's still an incentive to use it once you have everything unlocked.
"A cold start in the 282 can take 20 minutes or more"
I'd installed that mod, and I thought I broke 'er... ohhhhh (It's heckin' fun in VR, though)
I love the fact that you still refer to the train as a choo choo
Loved this video and hearing your insight on realistic operations and mechanics of the gameplay and engines in something outside Railroads online
I'd love to see more modeling for the fireman's side of things in RRO- I've found that, honestly, I have more fun running trains with my friends as opposed to running multiple trains separately, be nice for the other crew on the train to have stuff to do other than pure brakeman work.
Also not at all opposed to seeing you jump into other train games, especially if you can keep the real world information flowing, there's a lot of stuff I've read that I'd love to hear about from someone with real life experience (like, I've read that unlatching the Johnson bar with it close to fully forward/back and an opened up regulator can be dangerous? stuff like that)
Cheers! And, yes, that's certainly true, though every locomotive (dependent on throttle/reg type, valve gear type, and valve type itself) is different. 346 you need a firm two hands on the bar if the throttle's open pretty far if you're making an adjustment, 491 isn't bad at all though.
Looks like you might have some mods installed. The steamer definitely doesn't build pressure that fast normally and there shouldn't be a float in the sight glass.
Yeah I realized after the fact that I did have a mod installed from over a year ago :/ oops
611th like! And as such I will correct you on the air brake schedule for 611 as-built. From photos I had found in a pamphlet by Coalition for Sustainable Rail (I think), there was a picture of the cab layout of a J in service. The brakes still looked like the manual lapping type to me, either 24RL or 6sl. Definitely not like the 26L 611 has installed today for FRA/Federal regulatory purposes for mainline running.
Gotta say though, I fired her last summer at Strasburg Railroad and she is every fireman's dream. You could control the pressure within a 5-10 pound range with ease. Gauge never read under 290 and never even feathered the safety valves. The regular fireman who oversaw my operation told me on the mainline you could literally kick your feet up and let her rip once you have everything set up.
Cheers Bryson :) envious you got to fire 611. That must have been neat. And, yes, I was referring to 611 as one of few I've seen with 26L - I'm not surprised it wasn't built that way. Makes sense, honestly.
Fireman's dream... Well, tell me that and fire her running tonnage :) I'm sure she's still a dream, but "kicking your feet up" - I doubt it ;)
Odd that the US coal burning locomotives don't have dampers. To my knowledge British ones do, and it's an essential part of fire control for the fireman. At a planned stop or a station the dampers are closed and this saves the coat and heat of the fire for when it's needed again.
I'd imagine this would be handled by turning down the blower to just barely keep the smoke moving out the stack vs into the cab.
@@kleetus92 Very strange.
@@TheSonic10160 Thousands of examples would beg to differ...
@@kleetus92 Do you have experience on locomotive footplates?
@@TheSonic10160 scale, but coal burning. I was referencing the entire north American fleet of locomotives built in that manner...
Scary to think that a real steam engine is even more complex than this thing.
That's why they had 2 person crews just in the cab :) and, not so much more complex... but certainly a touch at least :)
34:28, the BHm4/8's we have use Bar for pressure measurements of the hydrostat systems, and I believe the original pressure gauges on Unit 24 still have the readout in both PSI and Bar. The Hm4/4s also will display pressures in Bar when you toggle the measurement units in the screen.
Before you validate the papers the number on the top right is the same number as the train cars that are meant to be used
I love being a yank playing these games. Always wonder what they think when I'm blowing for crossings with wild abandon. Such fun!
As someone who did a similar - if not the exact same - job yesterday in the DE2, watching you blow through the mountains at 50-60+kph while I struggle to break 30kph until I'm heading down the far side of the pass makes me a little jealous.
DE2 is sad on the power side of things :P
Just heads up on nexus mods there is a realism mod that fixes some of the jank you were talking about and there is also a knuckle coupler mod that works quite well!
I think the reason for the UK's/Europe have a screw link coupler is for running odd cars on trains the buffers might be different lengths so that you could adjust the distance between the cars to prevent buffer clash
Had a thought on the accurate coal placement. In theory, you setup the mesh to have multiple interaction points on the mesh grid. Both the train, and your shovel full of coal, can interact with the multiple points on the grid, increasing the pile at the interaction point. In theory, this would allow for asymmetrical interaction of the coal in the firebox, but I have no idea how doable that really is.
Yeah, the challenge of it comes from how do you simulate the "throw" with the scoop in a fun, non-annoying way.
There are mods for the game, i use 2, one that organizes the jobs at the station, and another that gives a hud ion the top left showing speed brake pipe and upcoming speed and grade changes on the line, and i know there is another one that adds knuckle couplers. all the mods are on the nexusmods page for the game
I knew there were some mods, but didn't realize knuckles were part of it. That's cool. Those others sound like great QoL.
SH282 means SuperHeated 2-8-2. the DE6 looks to be a short GP16.(taken from wiki)
It’s based off of a G16, which was an export locomotive built by EMD, similar to an SD40. A GP16 would be a rebuilt GP7/9 and only 4 axle
@@TheBeeMan1994 the more you learn, the more your past self is stupid.
If the bigboy (coal version) used a fireman instead of a Archimedes' screw feeding it. it would be highly doubtful that a fireman could feed it enough to blow its whistle
I know for coupling up stock in the uk, it was never done on the move like a US knuckle. the loco would stop short of stock. A crewman steps out of the cab and waits aside. Loco would then buffer up, apply brakes, then the crewman ducks under for the coupler and brake lines.
Ah, that makes sense.
I think that derail valley is the best train game on the market. Plus they have added great updates. Would be nice if it was online but it’s still the best.
In my opinion I think it should work like this.
Instead of watching the Firebox tell you when you put in more coal or when you stop putting in cold you should watch the steam. Now I'm no Railway engineer but on the LMS they used to watch the steam to tell them when to put in more cold.
The way works or the way I think it the way it works( feel free to correct me )
When the Smoke turned completely pitch white you would add more cold wood or whatever you would be burning but when the smoke turned gray you would stop and if the smoke turn to black it would mean you over feeding your locomotive
Watching the stack is certainly a good indicator. Doesn't necessarily say *where* you need coal, but it gets the general point across.
Of course, it is cool for you to check out other RR games and sims and also steam engines which you are so passionate about Hyce come on man!
And nice of you to talk to them about theirs as well and offer advice on it too as long as they do not take offence of course!
I pick on car simulators all the time being a Mechanic and knowing as much about cars as I do so it is common practice to pick at things like you were doing has nothing to do with your own game modeling! I am constantly reworking the specs on vehicles and Tractors on the "Farming Simulator 19 & 22" Games because of my knowledge.
On the Nexus mod site there is a download for a more realistic set up for that steam engine for "Derail Valley" you may want to check out everyone raves about?!
Anyway, Fun video man!
I should check that out! Cheers! I get that about being a mechanic... I just remembered that there's a "train mechanic simulator" that I could probably roast at some point. Lol!

I'ma be honest, I actually don't mind the shunting jobs. Reminiscent of the good ol days with Thomas and Friends. Back before it was CGI.
Don't forget you have a map in hand to be able to check how far you are from junctions. If not in hot bar you can grab from menu.
As far as the coupling cars I remember seeing somewhere they chose to go with the link style to be more engaging in VR.
Lol, yeah, that would be a lot smarter than my "jump out and check it" approach... I should also use the comms radio to flip switches. Old habits and all that :P
I'm down for some railroads online or some derail valley they're both great games and I wait to see what you play next
Regarding gamified firing mechanics in RO, you could predefine sub-regions of the firebox and assign variable or dynamic burn rates to them, necessitating more or less fuel to be applied in those spots. Difficulty level could scale the number of sub-regions, such that realistic has the most, and casual the least. On the harder difficulties (or perhaps as a standalone option), this mechanic could have engines of the same type fire differently.
Watching @Hyce run a steam locomotive is one of those things that I didn't know that I wanted but god damn I'm glad it's here.
I know that I'm a little too late , I know that you stepped away from Railroads Online but I'd be super stoked if you could pass this on to the current devs/mods:
1. please fix the whistle audio, it sounds like you're listening to a sound byte on a computer. There's no echo to them like there used to be.
2. please give us the option to switch out and use different whistles. A "big" 2-8-0 with a single chime teapot whistle just doesn't feel right.
3. please, PLEASE let us run on slower burning coal. It's a pain in the neck having to constantly restock the firebox with wood while I'm trying to switch cars in my yards
4. And for the love of God, please let us have knuckle couplers. I'll fall on my knees and beg if I have to lol
Screaming into the void unfortunately! The devs don't listen to me.
Glad i found your channel man good work
Cheers!
What… your afraid of screw couplers when on railroads Online you have a even more deadly coupler. You are real funny mate.
Lol, bit of a double standard, eh? that's definitely fair :P I think because I don't have to be in between while the cars are moving (I mostly play single player!) in RO, I didn't get the "danger sense" I got here.
Doesn’t look very promising in your screen shot. Can’t wait 😜
You don't get to blame the poo poo track for derails in this game. Hehe
Completely different vibe. It's got some coolness.
Actually 40 is the official speed limit whem croossing a switch in most of westerm europe. 40 kph that is
Here's a question. Why do they not implement "automatic" brakes in cars for the E-Brake/Hand brake. In such a car to release the hand/parking brake, you would pull the leave up to overcome the springs locking the rear wheels up. This would then mean, there is no cable under tension to snap while the car is parked on a hill. The cable is slack in the parked state.
I suppose to answer my own question. Nobody wants to have their hand brake slam on full at 70+mph! Cars don't run on rails, slamming the brakes on at that speed, especially just the rear ones, will not end well.
Going down a cut like you seen @ 20:40 in the Video Perfect slope off the side of the Engine to the water line is what I would like to have in Rro! My imagination of a old time railroad line in the north west. like Montana.
Love railroad stuff ill definitely watch it
No need to decouple to complete contracts at the moment. you can also slightly turn water valve (using mouse wheel when the control is highlighted) to give a trickle into the boiler ;)
Yup, that's what I did using keyboard controls ;) but I didn't know that about the uncoupling. Cheers!
sweet, I been meaning to obtain a copy of derail valley.
America clearly has its "own way" with steam engines. The loco in DV is sure a mix between British, US and German. British coal burning engines extensively use dampers. Sometimes both a front and rear to provide more air to the fire. Bar tends to be a German thing.
Fun how different they can be... Right?
Railroads Online just has some massive advantages compared to Derail Valley for me.
1 - you can drive trains from real life history
2 - the locomotives are from a neglected part of railroad history in the train sim world
3 - the sounds design is much better
4 - I get to choose where my railroad goes and what it looks like.
I'm sure the devs have worked hard on it, but I honestly can't get past that ugly US/UK Frankenstein steam engine.
I appreciate that :) I think that DV "scratches a different itch" than RO. Both serve a different purpose to me. I do agree on you points though :)

There is a VR version of this game and I recommend that version since it is very immersive.
It is! I just don't know where the heck my VR headset is since I moved.

I'd love for in Railroads Online to have a first person view when entering the train alongside the third person. I'm too scared to try and operate my train from first person mode, because if I fall out, it's not possible to catch back up. I don't have that fear in this game since you can teleport.
That's not a bad idea. "get glued to the seat" but first person.
If you're interested in railroad games there is one that I've messed around in a bit and it's supposedly a really realistic oil burring stream loco sim, the game is called, Santa fe and disneyland railroad steam locomotive sim (really a mouthful of a name lol) it's fun although the 3 routes aren't very long it's main thing was the trains not the routes but it's definitely worth a try and worth the $60 USD imo.
Haven't heard of that, I'll have to look into it!

If not already said, you should look for „zeibachs Steamer overhaul“ at nexusmods
Out of curiosity, you mentioned the relief valve. Are boilers typically kept at full pressure all the time? I tend to operate the sh282 by keeping the pressure down when it's not needed and then start preloading the firebox to bring up the temperature a bit before hills to kick up the steam production. And then back off near the top but maintaining a balance with steam production at half pressure most of the time.
Most of the time, yes. If you're a railroad trying to get the most of what you have, you need full pressure. As well, depending on the type of air compressor the locomotive has, you need 130-150 PSI just to maintain air pressure for the brakes; depending on the type of injectors the locomotive has, you might need 50-120 PSI just to put more water in the boiler, etc.. As well, large and/or fast pressure changes are also temperature changes, which is really bad for the boiler if done quickly - so, typically you'll either see a case where they don't need the pressure for whatever reason, and will de-rate the locomotive (operate it at less than MAWP), or, they are trying to operate close to MAWP, which then varies based on how good your fireman is. IRL we shoot for maximum 5 PSI variation while running, but sometimes it ends up 10 PSI or so.
technical nerdiness is IMPORTANT. animals and humans use play to learn. now you see a steam locomotive, with all the controls in the wrong place. you learn it wrong. sure you wont need to drive one of these in reality like ever, but maybe you will... now you just have all the useless info in your head about how it works. calling the inaccuracies out is super important
You can look at the number at the top of the job overview and the small car number
you seem to have the cut off mode installed for the steam engine from the reversed regulator and ball in the water level you can actually change a lot of options in this mode to fit your needs and realism
Yeah, I think that is the one that I had installed.
for rail roads online in the fireman position it would be cool for a vr with a shovel.
Certainly, just not likely.

Alongside the tip @Brendan De Beer gave about the card displaying the numbers that'll match the car for that job, you can also hook up and shunt the needed cars before you accept the job. They do not need to be on their "initial" rails for you to take them! Makes it really neat and easier to gain some time on multiple jobs
You should give the knuckle couplers mod a go if you prefer them, it's a bit buggy for me though.
oh wow, there's a mod for them already? I might just do that.
@@Hyce777 there's also an airbrake mod, one that redoes the whole airbrake system, not really sure how it works yet but the guy who made it said that it makes airbrakes realistic, there's also a car handbrake mod, it gives every car a handbrake, quite handy. My favourite is the Remote Dispach mod, it sets up a server that you can visit in your browser, you'll see a map with all the cars loaded in the game, really useful for shunting.
