Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, also known as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator whose immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris in the late 19th century allowed him to produce a collection of enticing, elegant, and provocative images of the modern, sometimes decadent, affairs of those times. Toulouse-Lautrec is among the best-known painters of the Post-Impressionist period, with Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. In a 2005 auction at Christie's auction house, La Blanchisseuse, his early painting of a young laundress, sold for US$22.4 million and set a new record for the artist for a price at auction.

After the death of his brother, Henri's parents separated and a nanny eventually took care of him. At the age of eight, Henri went to live with his mother in Paris where he drew sketches and caricatures in his exercise workbooks. The family quickly realized that Henri's talents lay in drawing and painting. A friend of his father, René Princeteau, visited sometimes to give informal lessons. Some of Henri's early paintings are of horses, a speciality of Princeteau, and a subject Lautrec revisited in his "Circus Paintings".

What an exceptional presentation of Toulouse-Lautrec's life. The exposition and development of his talent and style are sensitively portrayed as are the influences of his cultural milieu. This was a feast for the eyes and ears.
This was a wonderful presentation. I have one bone to pick though. He was not a dwarf.
One of my favorite artists.
I saw his work in a gallery in Paris in 1982. It took my breath away! I had been a student and an admirer of his life and art since the late 1960s.

Usually I do not like dramatized segments but these along with detailed history and analysis of the artists and culture of the times was an excellent augmentation. I found so much information in this presentation He respected admired his fellow artists and honored them in his work

Toulouse-Lautrec may have had a much more enjoyable, interesting life than many famous artists because of his acceptance and appreciation for the lives of more common parts of society, and their entertainment..
Van Gogh and Gauguin had equally if not more interesting lives
@@frenchartantiquesparis424 Van Gogh's life was not interesting in a good way. He spent years in mental asylums, cut off his ear in despair over his relationship with Gauguin, and in general was an extremely unhappy person. He wasn't recognized for his greatness during his lifetime, except for his brother Theo's appreciation-- and never earned enough to live on -- Theo supported him. If he was happy, it was only when he was painting (or reading).
Thank you for this great documentation of a great artist. His colors are so beautifully subtle and on the other hand very loud.
A true genius who surmounted his shortcomings by becoming our beloved world painter.

Wonderful presentation on Henri... thank you so much for this intriguing look-see into his life with special attention to details. I'd just finished reading Henri Perruchot's land mark biography and this was delightful icing on the cake. Bon chance.
You must see John Huston's "Moulin Rouge" (1952) with Jose Ferrer, not to be confused with a film of that name about 20 years ago. It's fictionalized, but contains a bravura performance by Ferrer, who actually had his legs bent at the knee for the performance.
He actually was not a dwarf. He had a normal male body, fully grown, but his leg bones were very weak and both broke when he was young. They did not heal correctly. His parents were closely related and his family had a history of marrying too genetically close, and the result was Henri. His body was not able to heal these weak bones and they never grew correctly.
The result was a normal man from the body trunk up, but withered, short legs.
(He threw great dinner parties in his atelier, which he cooked himself, often grilling exotic fowl sent by his mother at the country home. He also hand painted the invitations for each guest himself.

Sixty years ago I was given a book of Lautrec's work as a school art prize (my art teacher asked me what I wanted). It was the only highlight of a dreary schooling. I loved my six years Architecture course in university...but didn't like the profession but loved designing. As an old man I'm back to painting.

This was a fascinating walk through Rockwell’s process. Thank you for the creative presentation. More like this! Would also be interesting to have a video contrasting the processes/approach of two different leading artists/illustrators.
A fine presentation of the work of Toulouse Lautrec. It's nice to see so many of his lesser known sketches and drawings. Like most of the art videos, this one as well is marred by the superfluous music track and the endless and irritating repetition of a tinkly little ditty that is unpleasant to listen to and really drives you crazy.

Great video! What an incredible soul and artist and life…the soul who was Toulouse lautrec later became John Lennon. Look at the face, glasses, the same line in the drawings….the same genius revolutionary spirit and art. And the sharp wit and humor and charm. The ability to be popular and entertain and to understand and promote the entertainment world..And also the preoccupation with bed ins and erotic art which John Lennon did. Also the interest in Japanese art!! And to support the outcast and underdog. Hello Yoko Ono.
In an earlier life I knew this soul in two different lives in brothels….a palace in Venice in the 1400s and the coast of North Carolina in the 1700s…..he loved prostitutes then and also had a great friend who was a dwarf ….

*Tujone* from wormwood is the main ingredient plus licorice and fennel. Tujone might elevate a person's mood. It is considered toxic in large doses. Absinthe has a high alcohol content. So, it's alcoholism that messes a person up.
