I'm an old man living far from the ocean, now in the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. For 30 years, I have lived within 6 miles from the second largest river in Idaho, but it isn't like the ocean I miss. I lived for 25 years on San Juan Island in Washington with whales and eagles and salmon to eat a lot, but beginning in 1962, as a teenager and for the next 7 summers, I went up the AlCan, north by plane and several times up and down the Inside Passage from Friday Harbor to Seward on a small purse seiner. I've been to Ketchikan, Juneau, Warm Springs Bay, Petersburg, Wrangell, Pelican, Lituya Bay,, Pt, Gardner, Hoonah, Icy strait. I've seen gold speckled in ghost town walls on the west coast of Chichagof Island. I was in a 44-foot wooden boat, family owned. For the people who watch this video, cruising this Passage is a thrill of a lifetime with so many memories.

@@MVSKOOKUM1 Ten years ago, my wife and I and some friends went to the Oregon coast where I had to play in a group music contest. (I play mandolin and banjo.) My wife and I visited Newport, a town that used to really be into fishing. We toured the docks with fishing boats there. I enjoyed it because I knew the language of fishermen and crews on boats treated me like I was a part of their crew.
One of the most interesting places coming down from Alaska was in the Canadian Dodd Narrows, which is where water falls over itself three feet. I had hoped to take a picture of that with my little camera, but it was so rough, while I was hanging on to the rails on our flying-bridge, that I had to just keep it as a memory. And I remember going through Seymour Narrows when the tide was probably doing 10 knots and we started at 8. Smaller boats had to wait longer for slack tide. Once coming south we hit the Narrows at night in the fog and in those days radar was not quite a thing yet. My job was to hang over the bow and look for the shore being too close. I could hear the big horns of the freighters around us. The rest of our crew of five had been eager to go home on a plane to see sweethearts, but I wanted adventure so more than once I was the only crew member from Seward to Puget Sound.
I've been in the Gulf of Alaska, 50 miles offshore when the wind was blowing around 70 knots, and gold panned in Lituya Bay where an earlier earthquake had taken off all trees up to 400 feet on the mountainsides. And being 20, I was a little scared when I looked up from my gold-panning and saw a big brown bear standing up sniffing the air, some 100 yards from me. My new Winchester 30-30 looked mighty small, but luckily the wind was blowing from the bear to me so he went into the woods and I didn't do any more gold panning.
Traveling in the San Juans is interesting but so is traveling in the Canadian San Juans coming south from Alaska. I've seen quite a lot in Puget Sound but by that time my much old brother had sold that Alaska purse seiner, that I had named the MV "Pat", when I was 12-years old in Friday Harbor. The next boat he had was an old 65-foot fish buyer on which I saw some of the Sound. The next boat was what I called a luxury fishing boat made into a fish buyer. It was a 58-foot Alaska-limit (Salmon-fishing boats over 58 feet long cannot get a license to fish in Alaska.) My family was always adventurous so I've seen places even in the Sound where most people don't go, like under the Deception Pass Bridge connecting two big islands, where the tide famously goes so fast.
One of the most interesting places to see on the Alaska Coast is on the west side of Chichagof Island. There, in the 60's I got to see two ghost towns that mined millions of dollars worth of gold in the 30's. Since gold wasn't worth what it is now, I could see gold flakes all over the walls in an assay office. And there is a place, I think of one of the really big islands where we went from the ocean up a deep stream into a lake and then at a certain tide level we went into another big lake. I couldn't find it for years because I only have a Forest Service Map of Tongass Nat. Forest, but from looking at a nautical chart displayed on the boat I will discuss below, I found it. You should be able to go there. We did and we had a pretty deep draft. I think it was called Lake Anna.
My first trip to Alaska was when my family worked on a fish-buying scow anchored at Noyes Island when I was 9, but though I had named the boat I would later work on, my parents wouldn't allow me to go north until I was 17. They thought it was dangerous. They were correct.
You may have already viewed this, but there is a series of travels by Flemming Yacht Company. They use a 65-foot yacht called the "Venture" and they have toured Southeast and the Canadian coast extensively. They've gone to the Aleutians, up the Snake River to Idaho, to Iceland, Nova Scotia, the Netherlands. Since I'd seen several of the places they'd seen up the Inside Passage plus Prince William Sound, I wrote to the head CEO and we exchanged e-mails quite a lot. Their trips have amazing photography. If you haven't seen them just Google "Venture" in Alaska to start.
Hope in your travels you get to see as much as I did and maybe even as much as "The Venture" did in their many travels, in Alaska. Thanks for writing back to me. And when I moved to Idaho to a county with 9000 foot peaks and the deepest canyon in North America, I explored everything I could but on foot with a pack, something than newcomers from other states rarely do, and you can even take your boat from the Pacific Ocean to within 80 miles from where I live, because Lewiston is Idaho's only seaport. But past Lewiston the river is one of the few big un-dammed rivers in the lower 48.
I'm now a 78-year old widower not doing much adventuring but still living on 11 acres, 20 air miles from the largest wilderness area in the lower 48, with a creek and 7--10 deer who beg each morning for the wormy apples I feed them. Don't ever give up going on adventures.
