I genuinely always tear up with the 'Night Dougal, Night Ted' scene in the last episode. I think this just means the writers and creators didn't just create an absurd, 2 Dimensional world - but a fully, rounded hysterical invention that plays very close to our hearts. The Ted household was a brilliant, warm thing and provided many, many a laugh for my family. RIP Dermot.

Had my grandmother, the quintessential Irish-Catholic who "went to church twenty times per week, plus an additional three times on Sunday", lived a few more years, she would have definitely laughed her a** off, then flown (Aer Lingus coach) to Craggy Island, washed Fr. Jack's mouth out with Lifebuoy, forced Fr. McGuire to go to confession, had an argument with Mrs. Doyle on the right way to make tea (always use Barry's Red Label), then she'd have visited Dermot Morgan's resting place, said a quick prayer - and then would have thanked him for "giving life to a TV show which made her laugh".
I'd have cancelled her cable before allowing her to watch Mrs. Brown on the Beeb.

Truly wonderful show. Satirical, surreal, daft and hilarious. Even though several biting swipes were taken at the Catholic Church, it was done in such a fun and innocent way that it didn't offend anyone. Can't believe it's now twenty years since Dermot Morgan died, but still very missed. RIP Frank as well. I can't think of anyone I've known who wasn't a fan of Father Ted, and it'll go straight alongside a handful of other great sitcoms that gets funnier the older it gets.

Such a special, special show. I was privileged enough to watch it as a child with my father (Mark, not Ted) when it came out. I'll always remember the moment I found out that Dermot died. I was 9 year's old in class, in "year five" at primary school and a friend told me how he died and I was so shocked and upset and I can remember trying to picture how it must have happened at the dinner party. I don't know specifically why, but that moment has always stayed with me. I absolutely loved Father Ted. It represented very special times with my own father (now dead), bonding and laughing our asses off. I'm 35 now (2022). Rest assured if I have children, they'll be watching it, too... It will absolutely stand the test of time and be loved for years and years to come.

Just last week (July 14, 2022) I took my daughter's dog to a dog park in Central Finland.
In the park, with their dog, were a very young couple aged 24 and 25 (I asked them their age). I explained I am English. The guy said to me after a small chat, "Drink! Drink! Arse, Feck!" I looked at him and said "Then you must know Father Jack and Father Ted?". They both answered "Oh yes, we sure do!".
They went on to tell me how they have had enough of Netflix, Disney, etc. because hardly any of it is interesting and funny any more. They told me they found Father Ted clips on CZcams and fell totally in love with it. They bought the entire box set online and have been watching it over and over, ever since. Their friends, also. It was the most memorable time for me that I have had discussing with Finns.
They told me they would love to visit Ireland and The House. I explained that I drove around Ireland a few years before and visited The House, The Cliffs, The Very Dark Caves, etc. I told them some good travel info (car rental, etc.), and how to end up in Dublin, which is a must, especially O'Donoghue's pub.
So, Father Ted seems to be once again enjoyed by our new generation.

Yes, thank you for sharing this.
Looking for my next CZcams fix, I came across a show I had never seen or heard of . . . Father Ted. Initial reaction was cold-to-lukewarm. Then the characters swamped me and I loved them all. The scenery, the music, the boyish humour.
Each character and its actor was familiar, human, altogether hysterically funny at times, often quite honest, true to the human race I lived with as a child.
Art and artists to be treasured. In the name of Ireland!

As far as I know Irish television executives didn't want to commission the show as they felt that it was too much of a risk. The Catholic church at the time still had a pretty big voice in Ireland and they didn't want to rock the boat too much. It ended up being produced by a British TV Company (channel 4) and was subsequently filmed in London studios.
