    Thanks for hanging around. I wasn't "satisfied" with my riding, I thought I could do better. Then, when I turned 78 quite suddenly, I slowed up like I had dropped an anchor. I continue to ride, but I am now so slow that I prefer to ride alone. But at least I can ride without lying to myself such as buying an E-bike so that I can brag about my average speed. I still have a collection of bikes, but the focus has turned from carbon fiber to steel.
    And to the point of your posting, I too find oatmeal with butter to be the best riding breakfast.

    50 years of cycling and 16 years of amature racing I was always a fan of yours! Once again you advice is spot on. I always ate oatmeal or pancakes with peanut butter to save money for better bikes! Turns out there is no better fuel! You're the Best Bobke!

    Good call on the oatmeal. I used steel cut oats and dried cranberries. Rocket fuel. Superior to flat cola any day.

    Great video!!! I have been having this breakfast since 2000 when i first got into cycling!!! My recipe varies though - depending on the day, ride weather condition and etc. Sometimes chopped apples, or add bananas afterwards. Also a spoon of extra virgin olive oil instead of butter. Organic raw honey or maple syrup and a dash of sea salt. and of course the Italian stove top mocha espresso pot is an every morning affair!!! It is indeed the beast way to start your day period...

    Hi Bobke, I realize this is an old video so I’ve been under a rock for the last four years with a concussion. I’ve been a huge fan of you and all of your teammates since the late eighties. I live in Vancouver and have had the honour of competing with your mate Alex Nicholas Ernst Stieda in a crit , John Tomac at Mammoth Mountain worlds in 89. Trials,cross country,hill climb and a down hill. You at Silverstar mountain in sunny Okanagan for a World Cup on a mountain bike around 1995 I think. Nothing but fun! Oh ya, I’ve been riding and racing a team 7-11 Eddy Merckx Corsa extra since 1989 and nothing else baby. So,,, I have always been an advocate of the oatmeal breakfast for a ride. The plow horse went all day on oats. If I could comment about a Hot breakfast, warming your guts and hot coffee like tiger balm and Vaseline mix on the back of your knees stuff. An old friend of mine who was a top athlete, Olympic, world champ in judo, football star in Texas and I have always looked at the morning meal and the nights before meals. Our magic meal or food might be small sweet potatoes. Why are the Jamaicans so fast? It’s a magic food like fig newtons before they invented Power bars . There are so many varieties 🍠 because it is a complex carbohydrate , I believe it means every starch molecule has sugar connected so this releases slower and sustains your energy for hours not one hour from your bodies ability to store and release glucose. Also try a three egg omelette with a baked sweet potato. You can remove a yoke or two if it’s an amateur race distance. Other benefits are the fibre content to hold liquid from slouching around in your stomach. And if you get nervous and throw up before a race it will come out your nose easier than a bagel! We avoid dairy and wheat because of flem and non digestive protein in wheat for humans so stomach cramps and bad farts stuff for sure. I hope we can ride together one day and I will bring you a big slice of my wife’s home made banana bread it the turn around ! Please keep smiling and laughing and doing this stuff on CZcams for fun. If you are ever coming to the Pacific Northwest or in Vancouver I’ve got extra room , a bike stand in my garage , a bowl of oat meal and a big pot of hot coffee. Old school is the only school . My friends call me tailwinder or Johnny tailwind !

    My go to breakfast since I went vegan 3 years ago. I dont use the butter , but I do love me some blueberries. I vary it up bit with the fruit, usually what ever is fresh and in season. Initially I had a hard time believing how much energy a simple bowl of porridge with fruit gave me. If I dont have my oats in the morning, my mind is not right for the rest of the day. I like the work you have done on your channel and always look forward to your commentary on cycling , CZcams and TV. Love that laugh!

    I cut up a banana and put the berries into the bowl and mash it all. I then add the oatmeal after it is done cooking. I find raspberries and blackberries are the best. But today it was mainly strawberries and blueberries.

    As it happens, my favorite preride (>1.5 hours) breakfast as well. But I add a raw egg somewhere near the end and a couple tablespoons of wheat germ. Hope you're not putting the maple syrup in the coffee, sacrilege!
    What's a good time to wait before actually starting the ride? I usually need a half hour for it to settle in.

  • @champtech8755
    @champtech8755 Před 6 lety +1

    The best oatmeal is from Whole Grain Oat Groats NOT like an instant oatmeal, there's nothing in it, totally nothing. I like my oatmeal cooked in whole milk, but before that I precook oat groats in water till they're almost ready to eat (one hour or so). And instead of blueberries I use raisins, they give you a LOT of energy, as well as I take raisins with me on the longer rides 3+ hours.. Butter is good too and maybe a little brown sugar. The best meal before longer rides, I personally, don't eat anything else.

    Two things. I can get a 3lb. bag of frozen blueberries, which would thaw quickly in your oatmeal for about $7 or $8US. A pint of fresh blueberries sells for $4 to $5US. The heart healthy choice these days, according to my nutritionist is either Country Crock or I Can't Believe it's not Butter.
    I don't care what my nutritionist says about coffee though. I'll probably keep drinking it until my heart or bladder explodes.
    Enjoy your breakfast.

Enjoy your coffee as you wait 5-8min. Remove bowl, put spot of butter and brown sugar, pour in oatmeal, top with berries. Get all the nutrition.

    It is nice to hear that your cycling career panned out for you, Bob. And thanks for sharing your favorite breakfast. As for me, I tend to start fasted and then snack as necessary. And the fasted start is the formalization of a habit from my youth, when I commuted to high school by bike and simply didn't eat breakfast before leaving the apartment. I simply figured I'd go faster if I was lighter, but it was the mid-Seventies and what did I know, not much, it was all just a lot of fun to draft cars and chase mopeds on my way to Frankfurt American High School. And a tip of the hat to the Benz drivers who never seemed to mind that I was on their bumper when the traffic was flowing smoothly enough for that sort of shenanigans.
