Next Level E-Scouting || Locating Mature Bucks in the Hills

- In this video I take you along on an e-scouting session. I use three different mapping applications to locate where pressure is likely to occur on a property, identify tiny bedding knobs, changes in cover, thermal tunnel bedding areas, thermal hubs, and where the most likely mature buck bedding occurs in hill country. I run you through my ideology in escaping pressure and saving you time during your boots on the ground scouting sessions by eliminating over 90% of a property before even putting your truck in park.

Jacob, I definitely appreciate this video. It helped me to understand more on E-scouting. I was decent at reading and marking the maps where I think bucks were bedding and I found good beds when I went to go scout. With this video and instructions it definitely helped me gain more experience. This will help me find the beds I didn't find and understand.

If possible maybe do a E-scout then go scout and show what you were talking about and how the bucks are utilizing it from what your thoughts were looking at it from a map. I understand it’s difficult to do but honestly the video you did is by far one of the best ones I’ve watched. I was really able to understand everything you were talking about. I hunt Tennessee the most because that’s where I’m from so the hill country videos is better for me. I know you can use almost the same strategies you would for marsh or farm land but hills I think are a little tougher because of the thermals.
@@leecharlton1789 so I can’t show exactly the same map because I hunt public. In Wisconsin there’s some crazy pressure and I already have people figuring out my spots just from footage I show in the woods. Check out my first e-scouting video and my hill country playlist (“New Piece to Mature Buck: Hill Country” or something like that). In that series I e-scout a very similar piece to what I boots on the ground scout, take you on boots on the ground scouting in similar spots to what I e-scouted, and then take you on my hunts giving you Aerial imagery when applicable. I ended up calling my shot, getting opportunities at several mature bucks in places I scouted, and killing a great buck on public land

Great stuff Jacob, nice breakdown. Certainly gives people some ideas and options, and allows them to tweak it as they see necessary. I’m new to CalTopo also, and starting to utilize it for setup timing (thermals) and preferred bedding depending upon the time of year (shade or sun). Thanks,

Much appreciated!! Couldn’t agree more with the tweaking for your own preferences. It’s important to test all skills you see/hear and certify if they work/help you. That shade feature is certainly a huge help to me as well!
In late season with the deer bedding in the spot with longer sun exposure, I assume they have a rising thermal longer as well. How would you access and set up if they were dropping out of their beds in the evening? Compared to the earlier example where you had an early dropping thermals and used that to your advantage. Seems like a tough setup in the late season.
That’s a great question! I might try and use something like a creek to draw my thermal down longer or I’d try and target beds where they move horizontally before dropping. This way my thermal rises away from them rather than being directly below them. I might also target their beds in the morning if they’re getting very habitual or sit near a secondary food source with my thermal rising away from them as well. It’s very spot dependent

I’m confused on your mapping of leeward 1/3 elevations. It looks like the southern ridge you marked all leeward but the northern ridge looks like all windward? Am I seeing it wrong?
Everything I marked is leeward with the occasional exception of small bedding knobs. Those are great for all winds so I mark them regardless of the predominant wind. The northern ridge is all leeward except for a small knob marking

I need to learn how to e scout flat ground. Would you have any idea
Leaf off imagery and 2 foot LiDAR would be my two main tools. Using imagery from month to month to see what foliage is thick and stays thick throughout the year is key. Interior and exterior transitions of thick cover would be my scouting point.
