    You kinda have to admire them for having the balls to do all these Beatles classics. You don't have to like them, but really, name one other band to stand up and say "We're worthy; we're gonna take all these beloved masterpieces and make 'em our own way."

    • @robbiestewart89
      @robbiestewart89 Před 9 lety +9

      Ben Culture Actually the Brothers Gibb didn't have a choice since their then boss and record label head Robert Stigwood had asked them to do it. Back in 1974, Robert Stigwood, then president and CEO of RSO Records signed The Bee Gees to RSO Records and was the main person who allowed the Brothers Gib to reinvent themselves away from their Atlantic Records days of the 1960's. The Brothers Gibb would later pay the price for this reinvention at the beginning of the 1980's when the disco sucks movement happened and lead to the Brothers Gibb going into hiding in a Miami recording studio through out most of the 1980's writing songs for other artists and producing other artists' material. Originally, the Brothers were hesitant to do both a movie project and an album full of Beatles covers and Barry Gibb has gone on record saying so many times including on an episode of VH-1's Behind The Music, but Robert Stigwood convinced them that the project would sell both movie tickets and albums big time and make them all rich. Initially the idea was working when the soundtrack was release, however, things began to fall apart after the movie was released and newspaper critics tore it up the way that they did. The main reason why Robert Stigwood had asked the Brothers Gibb to do the projects was because he had purchased the rights to use 24 Beatles songs, known in the industry as a mechanical license, and he was determined to use them since he had paid a lot of money for the rights.

    • @BenCulture
      @BenCulture Před 9 lety +6

      Robbie Stewart Thanks, I didn't know that, and Wikipedia pretty much backs you up. But I have to say, I wouldn't consider the Bee Gees a failure, and it sounds like this album was a success that got dragged down by the terrible movie it was attached to. They should have just left the movie up to the public's imagination. Since it was the LP age, they could have done a lavish booklet of still photographs from the movie (for all I know, they probably did), only they shouldn't have _actually released the movie!_ The album and its four singles are the only part of the project that made a profit.
      Personally, I hate rockism, the "disco sucks" movement, and the same mentality that destroyed New Wave and synthpop. I rarely listen to anything that has no keyboards, even if it's just an acoustic piano. I find most all-guitar bands boring.

    • @robbiestewart89
      @robbiestewart89 Před 9 lety +2

      Ben Culture Thanks. BTW, Wikipedia isn't the only thing that backs me up. I've been around the music industry since birth because I am the product of two parents who both worked in the entertainment industry. My late father was a professional musician and entertainer for 50 + years and my mom was a bar tender in many nightclubs where my father played gigs at. My father also used to back up many popular artists of the 1960's and 1970's as a guitarist in their bands, so I spent most of my childhood touring on the road and serving as both my father's roadie and electronics technician at a very early age. I am also a fan of VH-1's show "Behind The Music." This program profiles the history of many artists and it is one that I highly recommend watching if you want to learn the history of musicians. There are many episodes of "Behind The Music" on here also. Also, BTW, I never said that the Brothers Gibb were a failure as a music group and I'm sorry if you implied that from my posting. Most importantly, they were great musicians who also happened to also write many great songs that were recorded by many great artists and that's the one advantage that they did have in the 1980's when everyone was listening to the Disco Sucks movement, as they were able to retreat to a Miami recording studio writing songs and producing other artists, including a duet between Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton called "Islands in the Stream. I'm not sure, but I think that there is an episode of VH-1's "Behind The Music" on here also which profiles "The Bee Gees" also. I remember watching it on VH-1 around 1997, so that's also where a lot of my information comes from. Plus, I'm very familiar with Robert Stigwood as a label owner of RSO Records. RSO was also the original record label that issued the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack and both RSO and Neil Bogart's Casablanca Records were the two record labels most responsible for releasing most of the disco material back in the 1970's and that was one of the primary reasons why both labels folded in the 1980's also. There is also an episode of VH-1's Behind The Music on Neil Bogart on here. So go watch it. Take care and God bless.

They have a back catalog of songs that people can only dream of creating. This is a nice cover by Barry Gibb. We're so used to the Bee Gees performing their own original masterpieces that it is quite interesting hearing them sing the work of other great songwriters. What would have made this better is to have followed the Beatle's model more closely, using the contrast of John and Paul's voices in the different sections of the song to great effect. Including Robin's distinctive voice in this cover would have been magnificent.

      It just came at entirely the wrong time, not to mention the reaction to it fed right into their sensitivity about being considered Beatles knock-offs. They'd been labeled that way for their entire early career, and now they have something someone can point to and say "Told ya so?" I think that was why they went after Robert Stigwood with such venom, since he talked them into it.

    This was a movie and an album that each deserved about 2,000 times the recognition they got. They were panned hard.
    But, one thing that was amusing is where I was, theaters and stores were giving discount prices because of how much people were not into them. And, that was great for all of us that loved, loved, loved them both. We had a family album and some of us had a private one, too Saw the movie many times over a year or so, as the theater owner tried to get their money back. It went "straight to cable" and we watched it there, too. And, all this time later, as an old lady instead of a little girl, I still watch it when I get the chance. It's an awesome movie!

    I got up this morning and as I read the online newspapers, I see that two very bad things happened in a city where I spent most of my teenage years at. First, with three high school football players being injured in a car wreck. Second, a member of someone's family, who I knew from a long time ago is now facing some very serious legal charges in another car wreck that killed one person and injured several others that happened on July 4th. While I am in prayer for the victim's family that lost their loved one for all of those that were injured, I am also preying for the person's family whose family member is now charged in all of this, because they are fixing to go through a legal nightmare and I will stand by them and be there for them in anyway that I can. Mainly because a member of that family just happens to be someone that I loved and cared about a long time ago and still do to this day. Anyway, when I read all of this news this morning, it made me think of this particular version of a song originally written by two members of The Beatles and was originally recorded and released by them on the Sgt. Peppers album back in 1967. But I like Barry Gibb's 1978 rendition better, simply because it was the version I grew up listening to.

    No matter whose versions one prefers (being a Beatlemaniac, it's the Fabs all the way for me) there probably couldn't have been a better or more apt choice than the Bee Gees to redo their songs, as they were also consummate melodicists and composers who were obviously influenced by Lennon/McCartney. And their manager Stigwood was a protege of Brian Epstein, so the connection was full circle in some ways

    To be fair, this and Mo’s take on “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” were probably the best work they did for this album.
