    As a person whose games for years I can definitely say yes. Any game that requires voice chat is essentially unplayable as a female minority. It just isn't worth the abuse for me. Even playing mute the stuff you hear is grating. A lot of it is teens and kids but many grown men literally can't go three words without racial slurs or blatent homophobia spewing from their mouths.

      im a woman and cant understand the ''unplayable and abuse'' part of what you are saying?
      i think it's often how much you put into it, i play alot of Fps game's where the voice chat part is something you have to be a part off if you wanna lift your team.
      i know there are some who trash talk, but if you then talk to them as an adult, it usually goes the other way.
      im even playing rust(the most toxic community) and i have only once met a guy that was awfull, but that was becaurse he startet googleing me, and was calling me up on my life, that was to much. but i brushed it off and took it like he just could not handle i was better than him ;)

    What a great point to make that men entering spaces that women typically dominate don't face backlash. It's so evident!!! The biggest beauty youtubers are MEN!! and their ascension was QUICK. Men are allowed to enter women's communities without repercussions but the reverse is not.

      they do face blatant homophobia though, even if they were straight, but that's mostly from other guys. I'd say we girls are often more accepting and I think a part of it might be due to the fact that we don't have to face toxic masculinity.

    This is such an interesting topic! As a female gamer, the amount of systemic discrimination against women in the gaming community is intense and that's just one aspect of it. There's toxicity against people who aren't good and against people who are learning games or just trying out new things. There's gatekeeping when it comes to genres and consoles (mobile games aren't real games or stardew valley isn't a real game or get yourself a PC and then I'll call you a gamer). I know neither Cristine nor Ben are very much into the gaming community but a podcast exploring these ideas would be very cool 😁

  • @storm739

    As someone whose been into gaming for half a decade, I stopped picking female skins and characters just because I either get harrassed or weirdly flirted at. Especially shooters are a problem here, I used to join voice chats and immediately be confronted with sexist and degrading comments and terms based on my female voice.
    Another thing I picked up was the immediate doubt against female gamers. Before corona, I regularly visited conventions as I took interest in the community and cosplayed here and there but next to a few nice comments I was also called a faker and attention whore. People came up to me and asked me what I'm playing since I'm a girl, I told them, and they'd reply with "oh that's so basic, you don't even play the real games" or "Oh you play [insert random game here]? Tell me the entire lore of all the characters. You cant? Guess you're just a fake gamer girl."
    It's sad because I just want to enjoy videogames but because I'm a girl I'm apparently not allowed to.

      @superjirachi5981 Před 3 lety +9

      Sure all large communities have toxic parts but it’s still a problem and they’re still worth talking about and if we’re being perfectly honest your statement that “all communities have toxic parts” sounds more like a way to shut people up when they try and bring up the toxic parts of the gaming industry. And the fact that you immediately commented this after simply reading the title of the episode and didn’t watch certainly doesn’t make you look very mature and the kind of person who would use that argument to shut people up that simply don’t agree with you. Just because all communities have toxic parts doesn’t mean people have to just sit back and let it happen. They have a right to speak out about this issue.

    I'm an androgynous man who is sorta involved in both gaming and make up community. There's always negativity in all communities. As for my experience, there are more negative interactions in the make up community compared to the video game community. More people are involved and dedicated to hurt others in make up, however the videogame side does have a presence of misogyny and, more than homophobia, I would say sexism. While there's has been amazing progress in the field of female character design, the more commercial games tend to focus on finding a way to "make the sexy skin of a female character" and stuff like that. Another phenomenon we can perceive, that is shared with films in general, is that a game with a lead female character is less successful (meaning with fewer purchases) compared to a game with a male lead. There's mostly no direct aggression, yet you can still find people with mindsets that fall in sexist behavior. One of the clearest examples of this mindset is the harassment towards female streamers, who are constantly denigrated for their gender. Overall I think they're not the same level of aggression, yet both communities have serious issues among them that should be targeted and resolved.

    You can ask this question with every community. As long as people envy each other or don't like something about other people they might get toxic. If you join a group in a online game but you can't match their expectations, other party members might get toxic because you made the mission fail. Or the opposite you play too good and that made them insult you to cover their own mistakes...There might be a lot of room for toxicity in the game community but it's not much different from rl. Not many people would exaggerate about toxic people in rl, because you usually avoid people you don't like. Just hang around with people you like in online games and it will be fun 😁
    In certain games there are many lgbtiq communities too ;)

  • @Joker-fc4ir
    @Joker-fc4ir Před 3 lety

    The best way to describe the gaming community is we are in a loop.
    They go to a game, make it the best, play it and get it trending more and more, slowly bring it down, beg devs for certain features or items, devs add stuff, they complain, they harass the devs and threaten to quit, they leave, brand the remaining players as kids or nobody’s and babies, call the game dead, send threats to the left over players and devs, make fun of everyone left in it as well as devs, find a new game, make it #1 REPEAT!
    It’s just one big massive stupid loop that never should have existed!
    A lot of negative stuff is there but treat it like corruption. It starts to spread everywhere until everything is corrupted.
    It would be tough to fix it but it would take big changes to fix stuff. TGC is now a shadow of its former self

    I'm not a big content producer, but I've written video game reviews since a few years. I also tried streaming and I have to say that I have not faced anything sort of hate. Although I'd like to point out that I am too small for that. BUT I avoid playing online and also can confirm that this industry is one of the most toxic there is.
    (Small) Developer basically change their game because of online backlash they receive when displaying sensitive topics not in a way the people would have liked to. A recent example is Spiritfarer if you want to look it up. Or Deadly Premonition 2.
    Games are doomed before they come out and get dragged down so quickly because they might have offended someone (which is an easy task nowadays).
    The console wars are exhausting and keyboard warriors level up so quickly in that community. There is a decent side, but all of those slowly disappear from Twitter (including myself since it's just too much).

    So interesting! I was looking into the toxicity in the gaming community after watching Hafu (big Twitch female streamer) talk about her experience streaming and playing video games over the last 10 years. She said when she was 17 at an esports competition, a competing team name was "gonna rape Hafu at regionals". she won the competition but it's crazy how stuff like that was even allowed. Things thankfully have improved and are a lot more diverse.
