  • How to fix your GE Refrigerator if it stops making ice. Easy quick Ice Maker fix if your ice tray suddenly stops filling. Check for this issue before going forward and assuming the worst. Hope this helps others out there that have the same issue.
I'm not an appliance repair man but came across a few people with the same issue. After fixing it the ice is once again filling great. This fridge is about 5-6 years old.
UPDATE: If you notice that this happens again after this fix and you are noticing ice build-up in your freezer you need to replace your freezers defrost heater. It is located behind the rear panel inside the freezer section. Easy to remove. Look for some screws around the panels edge. The heater is a glass tube about 10" long located near the lower half, with a heating 'wire'-element inside. It will look burnout. Mine did. Simply cut the wires leading to it and snap in the new replacement. Strip and twist the lead wires back and done. Approx $30-$40 part and 20 minutes work. I did this myself and purchased the GE parts on Amazon. The parts I used are in the links below but please double check your model. While you're in there it's a good time to replace the small thermostat sensor too but this is not required.
Exact Parts I used for my fridge in the video:
    GE Defrost Heater: goo.gl/QyUF5O
    GE Defrost thermostat: goo.gl/bloSmI
After the fix in this video and later on replacing the parts in the links above I have yet to experience any problems with my fridge again. Completely like new. Cold drinks for all and no more ice build up!!!!

My icemaker stopped working and the (licensed) handyman that I am, I began to remove the ice maker to check it out. After removing the front screw I couldn't figure out what was still holding it in place. After seeing this video, I then checked the spring and it was not in place. What a time saver... thank you sir!

I bought my GE Profile Refrigerator in 2007 and never had a problem until January 2014 when the icemaker quit making ice. I bought 4 aluminum ice trays and I have been using them until 10/02/14 when I came across this "quick fix'. In seconds, I put back the pin in the hole as it had popped out and now my icemaker is working again. I kept hesitating paying $200 for replacement/repair and am glad I did. Thanks a million.

how do you put the pin back in? I have reset mine several times but nothing. Our frig isn't that old but not under warranty anymore. I am caring for my 96 year old mother and don't have the funds to pay for repairman. PLEASE HELP ME

    • @frankwilliams5154
      @frankwilliams5154 Před 9 lety

It's very easy. Use a wire hanger or any stiff thin metal rod and carefully lift the pin in the back and make it comes a little forward until it falls in the tiny hole. The pic can come out from front or back. Mine was the part of the pin in the back.

Thank you so much! This is exactly the problem my ice maker was having. I was about to drop several hundred dollars on a brand new assembly. Fixed for only 10 minutes of work. I noticed Ice had accumulated between the spring coils also making it not fit properly so I removed the screw that held on the spring and paddle, ran both under hot water, dried them and replaced everything and now working perfectly! Thanks again

Dude, I love you. If anybody is watching this I'd like to re-emphasize the tiny little hole that the spring has to fit into. If that little white paddle doesn't spring out it still won't work. I thought I had it fixed and wasn't thorough enough, but we watch this video and it was dead on. I love you so much internet stranger!

After 10 years of buying bag ice i finally ran a water line to my fridge. After getting it all hooked up, I was disappointed but not surprised when the ice maker still didn't work since it had never made ice or poured a glass of water since we bought it a decade ago.... thought I was fu**ed....Watched this video and nearly jumped for joy when I popped the spring back in, did the reset, and heard water trickle into the ice maker. Thanks man!!

This is an outstanding tip. After multiple time failures, I find a way to prevent the spring tip pop out by using a small drill bit to drill the hole a bit deeper. Taking the whole assembly out is very easy by uncrew one screw and electric connection. You don't need to power off or turn off water. Work perfectly now. Thanks

Oh my! I am so thankful for your tip. We have been buying unfiltered ice for a month or so. We thought we would need an appliance technician to fix this. What a waste of money this would have been. So again, I thank you for posting this simple video fix. First I tried the reset and it wasn't springing back so that is when I looked closer at the spring situation. Our little spring was so far off at let's say the 12 o'clock position and the tiny hole was at 3 o'clock . I just slide it forward until it seated in the tiny hole and heard the ice maker start up again! I jumped for joy!!!

2/5/24.....Thank you digitalP ! Your 4 minute video helped me solve my ice maker problem too here in 2024. A small ice chip had dislodged the spring from its mount. As recommended, I used a "dental pick w/ hook end" to grab the vertical spring end, pull the spring towards the front of the freezer, and "re-seat" the spring end in the tiny hole as you indicated. The ice paddle switch now "springs forward" again, as shown in your video. Thanks again.

You just made a 8.5 month pregnant (very hormonal and upset) woman have a huge sigh of relief. I just sat on the phone for an HOUR with GE and home depot protection plan and basically got nowhere other than 'we'll have to contract a local appliance repair tech and send them out'. I was reviewing the manual (images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/f1/f153619f-dfb0-4105-b31c-cb7a882bcc1a.pdf) where it says the 'When the bin fills to the level of the feeler arm, the ice maker will stop producing ice' so I decided to search 'feeler arm GE' and your video was the first that came up. I loosened and then tightened the spring, turned it off/on, then did the 3 pushes on the arm.. within the next 3 minutes, it pushed out ice.
You, Sir, are a genius!!! Thank you for helping me when I was just about to burst into tears because I just purchased this very expensive GE Profile fridge 1.5 months ago.

My problem with my ice maker was it wasn't making ice. After watching your video, I found that the spring had came out of it's hole. I simply loosen the two screws holding it in place, detached the ice maker, turned it over and located the spring. I then reattached the end of the spring back in it's hole, reattached the ice maker and it now it is making ice again. Thank you for the video. A great help.

Take a bow, you just saved me a $100. house call from a repairman who would probably then tell me I need 200 bucks in parts to fix it. You're the bomb - here's a huge virtual hug to you both! xoxo

You so rock! My husband and I watched your video, did exactly what you suggested. Went out and did an errand and returned to the wonderful clunk of fresh ice being made. Yay, martini time.

Very nice! Ours sometimes has a bit of ice frozen next to the spring, which has to be knocked loose or else it keeps the paddle from moving. Then the paddle was stuck in the "full" or rear position and wouldn't move forward normally. We never realized (until watching your video) that the tip of the spring had popped out. Thanks so much for taking the time to post your video!

Thanks, that did it! Had to re-set that end of the spring. That little hole was hard to see and was filled with ice. Glad to know how to do that reset also, with the turning off/on and moving flapper 3 times.

  • @CharlesFilipponiMolonLabe

Thanks! I am a total household dork so I was mystified as to how the damn thing worked. Followed your steps and there was some ice wedged in-between that arm and the housing top. Ha! Pulled the ice out and viola! Seems to be working again now that the arm has popped back out. Have to wait and see until later today.
    But thanks so far!

Absolutely on target and good advice; my spring was not in the hole. By the way, if you loosen the phillips head screw on the bottom of the spring arm (don't remove it), it's much easier to put the end of the spring in the hole. Definitely an easy fix. Thanks!!!!!
