My parents were big John Wayne fans and took me to see this film. This musical piece has left me a lasting impression til this day. The young male actors riding like real cowboys, soo cute!!!
i saw this movie at 13 with my brother and 2 friends in a movie theater that head 700 we were the only ones there, it was great , still my greatest time at the moives
This is a good one. Another you may enjoy by John Williams is the Olympic Fanfare and Theme, 1984. I listen to this almost daily. Makes me feel so happy, like anything is possible!
The Cowboys movie is an unsung American Classic! The Score in this movie is just incredible, and to top it off, there is a scene where they play Vivaldi on acoustic guitar! So many John Wayne fans I run into don't know this movie and I believe it is his best acting performance. So many times I am "corrected", that John Wayne has never died in any of his films and I must be confused with some one else. Lol Rise and shine, we're burnin daylight!
At the time I saw this fil in the late 80's on video. I hadn't caught who did the score on the credits. When I heard the music though, I thought "is that John Williams"? Then I looked at the credits and thought "wow". This is one of the best scores ever for a western and it reminds me of some of the great music guys like Dimitri Tiomkin did for John Ford a Generation earlier. Perfect score for one of the last great films of the legendary John Wayne. Wayne and Williams both broke the mold.
I agree, whenever I hear the overture of the Cowboys, I immediately think of John Williams they go hand-in-hand. When I first saw the Cowboys, when it first came out, I was 12 years old, and when I heard the first time the overture I was captured I never heard such and I love the way the music had its up and down and changing tempo. And for every change of tempo you remember the temple that went along for the scene of the movie especially when it came to Bruce Dern’s part. You knew right then and there that the scene was changing and so is the mood in the atmosphere. Only John Williams can do that.
i don't know of any other composer that will ever be able to take the place of john williams.....my father was a huge john wayne fan and i can never hear this music without thinking of him and the fabulous movie, the cowboys......
This movie was directed by Mark Rydell of "The Rose" and "On Golden Pond" fame. He loved it so much when he agreed to do the movie "The River" with Mel Gibson and Sissy Spacek he wanted Williams to do the score. It is also just awesome.
@@davidanthony4845 No, the Classical period ended around 1800, gradually replaced by the Romantic period, that lasted as long as Rachmaninov lived, well into the 20th Century.
Master of melody. Master of pacing. Master of counterpoint. Master of orchestration. Master of improving mediocre movies. What else could one want? Saddle up, pilgrim.
A great score for a great film. How do you beat John Wayne teaching kids, a Bruce Dern evil bad guy, A great Roscoe Lee Brown performance, and a Williams score? Also had Slim Pickens and other familiars.
Wonderful, derivative of Aaron Copland but typical Williams energy and passion. This guy is a true genius, not only for the music itself but his ability to dramatically enhance any film he composes for. This is the best music written for a Duke Wayne movie, and captures his cinematic spirit with near perfection! Love this music!
Is it just me, or did JW adapt one of the themes (End of the Drive?) into the first Superman soundtrack six years later? There's crazy similarity between them. Even if not, I love both pieces.
Tom Greenough Percussionists love fun parts like that! Much better than tacet. It’s also two mallets, which is cake compared to the four mallet concertos they all practiced in college and used to audition into the orchestra.
I don't have a better recording than this, but feel free to find one and post it. (it's not youtube compression, the source is like this). I know that someone posted a better recording of this concert on youtube, just search better. I'll try with time to upscal all of williams video but the sound can't be upcaled.
That was a little harsh. The production crew didn't know the score. You have to know who is playing what to have the camera on whoever is doing the solo work. In other words, you don't show violas doing their little off beat accompaniment during other instruments' solos. It just makes for a lot of missed opportunities. They did better on some other videos where they followed the soloists around the orchestra. They did a much better job on Summon The heroes conducted by John Williams.
the concert in vienna of john williams at the end of the year will be filmed and broacasted on Tv ! the first one since... since the boston pops i'm afraid. i hope they'll do a better job ! we'll see, as it's certainly a unique opportunity !
If you watch any of the Hollywood in Vienna programs you will see they are well prepared. The cameras are sequenced right with the score. See czcams.com/video/3xsP3u-CVO4/video.html
I spend the whole piece worrying about that high trill at the end, LOL. What a dirty trick!...but also a gift in terms of great opportunities for bragging rights.
Also, One2onepoint618, you were on that 8D. Don't forget the smaller bore horn you tried from Balu and just screamed out those high parts like they were nothing. Thanks also for just ripping into that opening lick any time you got bored in rehearsal--no matter what piece we were rehearsing, haha.
I saw the Charlotte Symphony play this Friday night for a pre-4th of July concert. What an amazing piece of music!!
My parents were big John Wayne fans and took me to see this film. This musical piece has left me a lasting impression til this day. The young male actors riding like real cowboys, soo cute!!!
always view them as young-men willing to grow if given the reins!
John Williams is an American icon.
Composer John Williams : One His Most Impressive Movie Scores. Simply Beautiful ! 🎵
i saw this movie at 13 with my brother and 2 friends in a movie theater that head 700 we were the only ones there, it was great , still my greatest time at the moives
This is my personal favorite. It's absolutely stunning to see it being performed and conducted by John Williams himself!
Musical instrument players are awsome people who dont get the praise they deserve.
I wish i could play the piano and the guitar.
I listen to this once a week, an amazing score.

Rise and shine, we're burnin daylight!
I think this is also a William's salute to Aaron Copeland.
That's a really good observation.
That's Copland. No "e."
I think if god himself ever makes a movie, he'll hire John Williams to do music.
and morgan freeman to play god again
SteveBurnsideRE1 ....because George Burns passed away.
But not anytime soon, please! We love having him here on earth and wish to continue to enjoy him and his creativity for many years!
I don't have an inside view but somehow I think if you could see into heaven God would be smiling and nodding in ascent, saying "amen."
...and the great composer Maestro Jerry Goldsmith
thanks you for this wonderful post, i always thought this work has been unjustifiably neglected
stephen cuunjieng you're Welcome !

Tiomkin was asked once how he, as a Russian, had such a feel for Westerns. His reply: "a steppe is a steppe."

Wow
John Williams could conduct anything, and I'd surely watch.
Great movie, great music, great JOHN WILLIAMS!!!!
My favorite movie score. Gives me goosebumps.
Such a beautiful sound in the strings. Thanks a lot for the video.
I saw this film when I was 18 and i still view it today
Great memories of this movie and the music, my Grandpa took me to see this in the theater when if first came out, one of my favs of all time.
So much talent and dedication. This music is just so beautiful. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this, I love The Cowboys.
a real joy to hear and watch.. thanku so much martyprod2!
A melodic ensemble of heart, grit and hope
i don't know of any other composer that will ever be able to take the place of john williams.....my father was a huge john wayne fan and i can never hear this music without thinking of him and the fabulous movie, the cowboys......
Mary Mattis then listen to Korngold.. He is the father of Williams in musical sense
Heartrendingly beautiful score.
He's THE BEST!!!! What happens to movies when he's no longer here?????
Ask thomas Newman, he knows the answer to your question ,)
***** or hanz zimmer
SteveBurnsideRE1 Hans zimmer knows the answer only because he's the one responsible of the fact that such movie music like williams does, disapeared.
my son will take his place!
make him great Musician. Let him chase his dreams :) all the best buddy
Those violins are absolutely beautiful
Recorded live at the Showa Women's University, Hitomi Memorial Hall, Tokyo on June 21, 1993

for some reason, my The River cd doesn't get much love
Uma das melhores trilhas sonoras que eu já ouvi 👏👏👏👏👏
Bravo through the french horns, especially Groucho Marx.
Groucho did a wonderful job 5 stars
the master at his best john williams
Wonderful performance.
No me canso de escucharlo desde la 1era vez que lo encontré. Parece una de las películas de El Duque John Wayne
Qué magistral pieza de john Williams¡
Brilliant and ingenious. Like Copland at his best. If Williams had been born in 1780 he would have been a fine Classical and Romantic composer.
He IS a fine Classical and Romantic composer.
@@davidanthony4845 No, the Classical period ended around 1800, gradually replaced by the Romantic period, that lasted as long as Rachmaninov lived, well into the 20th Century.
Wonderful.
My favorite John Williams theme
the complete score is currently available on CD, from Varese Sarabande I think
Amazing
lovely orchestration
Wow, a great job by the percussion section. To keep up with that speed and not mess up seems incredibly difficult
Master of melody. Master of pacing. Master of counterpoint. Master of orchestration. Master of improving mediocre movies. What else could one want?

Un Maestro.
A great score for a great film. How do you beat John Wayne teaching kids, a Bruce Dern evil bad guy, A great Roscoe Lee Brown performance, and a Williams score? Also had Slim Pickens and other familiars.
Music is Subjective..... but this song might be Objectively PERFECT!!!

John Williams is the best composer alive. Look at his page on Wikipedia if you don't believe me.
John Wayne inspired John Williams for this beautiful score.
Wow.

This is really cool!!!
But now I have to play this for honors band (cause I signed up for it) and this looks too difficult D: .....I play French horn
***** It went very well!
I have to play it but third trombone isn’t difficult.
The City of Praugue Osch is great
Murica. Fuck Yeah!
Kind of feel sorry for the guy on the xylophone. Great job and beautiful music.
Tom Greenough Percussionists love fun parts like that! Much better than tacet. It’s also two mallets, which is cake compared to the four mallet concertos they all practiced in college and used to audition into the orchestra.
I think it's the Tokyo Pops performing in Boston.
Played this on horn in high school. Our version would've been more appropriately titled "The Cowpies".
420th like
NewPaulActs, didn't you learn anything from the movie? Mr Williams just brought it all together.
Are you joking? This the Boston Pops performing in Tokyo. I do not know if I should take your comment seriously...
GGbreizh he is talking about the video quality not the players.
I assume this is the Boston Pops Orchestra??
Yes
Who gives a rats patooty about the guy in the control room, John Williams is conducting his music to The Cowboys!!
Bruce Dern and Roscoe Lee Browne stole the movie😊
This deserves a better recording. The compression is horrible.

And why can't other people have their own opinions or tastes, and not be judged to be 'deaf' by you?

Hoo of course they don't :( ... it's unfortunatly always like that in the majority of concert, any of them.

Not a fun song to play
Some french horn player must have stolen his girlfriend at some point and he is getting his revenge.
It is prefect fun as a hornplayer :) With a solid team this is just such a brilliant oportunity to show of :D

Well, if it's any consolation, it certainly IS fun to hear.
i loathe john wayne even more now.
