Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) videos to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers and zero turn mowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

I agree. Thanks Dony
👍👍👍
I have started to fix,or attempt to,fix weedeater
Finally, a video without a life long story, succinct, accurate, direct, easy-Thank you! Xxx
I am rehabilitating an old horizontal twin pulled from my neighbor's woods. You are right; there are some horrible maintenance videos on You Tube. I just subscribed and liked after watching this video. Considering the amount of filth and rust I cleaned elsewhere on this tractor now I know I should check the flywheel magnets and gap and coil itself.
@@paulbush6503 speaking of rust, I suppose you know about molasses for non labour intensive rust removal? 1 part molasses to about 8 parts water. Soak for couple weeks max & No Rust! You do need to treat the clean surface as when it hits the air again, she just wants to surface rust. I'm about to pull out 4 old Toyota split rims from the 44 gallon drum I set up a fortnight ago. Wash off the smelly good, dry, rust converter spray I already have, thought I'd give it a spray before spray painting them. My car trailer will be on the road to looking good!
I had a Craftsman snowblower a few decades ago where the magnet disconnected from the flywheel and attached itself to the opposite. Took me a long time to figure out the problem. I admit I'm
not mechanically inclined but just thought I would mention this incident in case someone has a rare occurrence like I did in the early 80's. I appreciate learning from your videos. Well done and clear concise information.
Thanks Don for giving us a place to start checking when there is no spark.
Thanks for the great video donyboy73! I've watched so many others that leave you with more questions than answers. Yours are well thought out and concise. Yours and Tepco Cycle repair should be the standards for posting helpful tutorials on CZcams.
Thank you sir. My toolbox has increased exponentially due to videos like this!!
Thanks for getting right to the point and adding no fluff
Good job Dony. My lawnmower with a B&S engine of 1994 vintage still has the original coil but I suspect one day I will have a no spark issue. This video is a good place to start the diagnosis.
Excellent explanation of that phenomenon. Very well done, Don! 👍
Great step by step diagnostic explanation! I trust this will help a lot of folks!
Perfect explanation that i used to diagnose a faulty coil on my lawn mower which is now fully working 😁
THANK YOU! My coil was out of adjustment, used your business card to set the gap correctly.
Don, I was already familiar with this diagnostic but I am sure many will find this informative video very useful. It was well laid out and gets to the point quickly. Even knowing the process I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it 👍👍👍👍👍
thank you for making everything clear and accurate, and a pleasure to watch,
These are among the best videos on small engine repair and maintenance, thanks for posting
As always, the best source in CZcams on tractors, i.e., most thorough, but succinct, coverage on the subject involved.
Thanks buddy great advice and very helpful appreciate you sharing your knowledge take care
Thank you for making this video. I am confronting this very issue with a leaf blower. I now know how to diagnose the problem.
Really clearly explained, as always. Thanks Dony!
Great Vid! I would never have thought to check non-grounded wire. Thanks Don!
Thanks Don. Great job explaining ignition coil problems and thanks for sharing your expertise!
I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my 290D as far as a spark problem. You solved it for me in a couple of minutes!
Now I can look for my wiring problem. Thank you for your help! The Old Guy/Larry
Really well made and informative video. Simple and clear information. I don't have this issue and just stumbled across the vid, but am now a subscriber. 👍
You’re the best! My son and I have learned so much from you!!
Absolutely fantastic info. Thanks again Don. 🇨🇦👍🏼
Great, thanks! The kind of thing I'd hope I could figure out on some level, but it is really useful to have it explicit.
we all enjoy listening to your video. Thank you.
Thanks, Dony. I have an Echo BP 265l leaf blower with no spark. I will use your tip to isolate the problem. Love your channel.
Thanks a million for making it so clear and to the point 👌👍
Excellent explanation on this topic. Love these videos!!
This one of the best common sense and best explained small engine vids I've ever come across on here!! I am always saying to my siblings that I am no troubleshooter with small engines, but with this info I think I graduated a couple grades. Thanks again!
Thanks a bunch, this helped me resolve an issue with intermittent spark. Turned out to be the kill switch cable being worn/stretched out (who would've thought huh?), added a spacer as a quick fix and it runs like a top! 😄
What an awesome video and tutorial. Thanks a million for the free education. It is very much appreciated. Have a fantastic day.
Wow! I really didn't know much of anything about this very mysterious area... As you mentioned once one understands this simple concept trouble shooting spark issues will be quick and easy! *Excellent Bonus Tip about having a solid plan in place to "stop an engine" once you have the switch wire disconnected!... :-) Thank you for sharing!
On point!! My mower with 691v Kawasaki had no spark while engine was hot. Replaced coils, still same problem. Cleaned all wiring connections and now no problem.
This is the best tip I have seen troubleshooting my tiller issue. Was able to figure the issue using this method.
Solid advice Dony, thanks! Have a great weekend.
Great video Donny!!!
You probably saved alot of viewers from wasting money on coils, when they really just need a new switch, or wire that's gotten frayed.
Thanks for the great tip. I put a new coil in my friend's lawnmower, and after a few weaks it started dying again after a few minutes, it wouldn't start till it cooled down. Hopefully I remember this in the spring.
100% Brilliant straight forward how to check a coil. Best on youtube by a country mile.
Nicely done on the explanation of the coil issues. 😊
Great clear instructions, thanks for the help.
Thank you!! Out of 5 or 6 vids I've watched you're the only one to explain what removing the primary coil wire does. It effectively eliminates the key switch (ground switch) from the run circuit
My ignition switch fell apart and the clowns at the small engine repair shop told me to just connect the two wires together which effectively grounds the coil and shuts off the spark.
My primary issue was not only bad gas, but water in the fuel as well, but in order to get to the carb I had to remove a cover, but in order to get the cover out of the way I had to remove the key switch wires, and in doing so I snapped one of the connectors of the switch. It's not uncommon for me to compound a problem during a repair when I'm in a hurry and not being careful. Anyway thanks again!
Thanks for this great tip DB ! love your channel.
AWESOME! Thank you from Nebraska.
Very straightforward explanation, many thanks
you sure made that easy to understand and so simple to do I have an old kohler engine from the early 60's with no spark now I know where to start thank you
THANKS! excellent description
Thanks Don, another great video. Keep them coming, i enjoy everyone.
Great vid Donny. Electric problems are my nemesis on equipment I’m working on.
Thanks for your help I'm going to check that now Briggs and Stratton lawn mower

Thank you very much for your insight !
Thats a life saving hack. Yes it's something new i learn now. Cheers for the tip.
Excellent summary at the end!!
Professional and informative please keep up the good work!
Great video for someone trying to do the work themselves! I've found that a business card works great, too!
This was a huge help. I have a old 80s generator with a points system in trying to get going again and I replaced the coil with a new upgraded electrical one off a generator that DID run once upon a time and turns out that coil is now dead as well.. what are the odds but now I know. Huge help, another big thanks to you Don!
Great advice and yes, 71yrs old and I learned something today.. Thank you.
great advice Donny.
a few years ago my wife had a Murray Ride on mower stop running while we were collecting fallen branches, we had been stating and stopping the mower a dozen times prior i did everything except pull the cut off wire, the fault was a short in the connector to the seat safety switch.
there is a spring in the connector that over time shorts out, planned obsolescent as its finest.
i've removed that shorting spring from several other Murray mowers since then.
Thanks, great tip! Helped me get my stepsons Stihl 029 running and he's very happy!!
Best explanation of how to check an ignition coil for no spark. Thank you
Great tip Donny, thanks!
what a great tip. Thanks Donyboy!!
Now I know where to go for great information and no rambling but. Thank you much.
Thanks for helping me fix my stuff and save money!
Best instruction on this I've seen. Thanks!
good video dony i had a no spark problem with my stihl blower it was rust on the flywheel great tip !
Thanks dony, some good info there and well-presented (speaking as someone who, as a young 4-Her did demonstrations at county fairs and won blue ribbons).
Thanks for this video. I was gonna buy new coil but i will follow all your professional advice from this videos befofe i walk down to the shop and buy coil
Very helpful. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for the info! :)
Update.
I just finished repairing my chainsaw. The flywheel was too close to the coil, too much wood dust everywhere, one tube from the rubber pump (the pressure one I guess) was shredded at one end. The light rain here pushed me inside the house. My room smells of gasoline. Tools everywhere. I kept going. The coil and the flywheel were pretty clean. I changed both tubes in the rubber pump area, cleaned the parts, re-positioned the coil (I did that trick with the business card), started the chainsaw, and... it works! The engine coughed a few times while I pressed the acceleration, then it worked better and better. Maybe tomorrow I'll cut some wood.
I'm tired but I'm also happy. Thank you, man. 😁
Very well explained, thank you!
Hi Don, thanks for sharing your money saving knowledge. I have a Gravely ProTurn48 with a Kawasaki FX691 engine. Recently became hard to start and then would not start at all.
Found a frayed wire running to the tab on one of the coils. Rats/mice had been busy doing some “servicing” as you said in your video. Fixed wire and it fired right up.
I know all this but I still watched your video because I like watching all your videos. 👍🇨🇦
nicely explained. Thank you.
Thanks Dony. That was very useful information.
Excellent video...Very well and very clear explanation. Good sound and clean English, easy to understand. Thank you...!!
Hello, my name is Dave Wilson.
Seeing this video caused me to feel it necessary to comment on a problem I had with my Stihl 026 Saw. Saw would start easily but not pull any load. Cleaned the carb twice, still no good. Must be ignition, but had spark with plug out of engine. Got new coil module, ran perfectly. Measured secondary resistance of coil with ohmmeter, new coil 5k ohm, old bad coil 1k ohm. Bad coil must have had some shorted secondary windings. Use an Ohmmeter.
Thanks so much, This was the answer to isolating my no spark with 2 new coils issue.
Solid Gold! Crystal Clear! Thank you Dony!!! :)
I went through this last year with my 12 year old SRM 230. It was running totally fine the year before, believe it started during my Christmas break maintenance, and I had it stored with 100% pure fuel and oil mix. It burps on first pull, and then starts right up afterward. Last year the thing wouldn't start at all and it was totally dead. I ended up proving that it wasn't the wires or kill switch first, tried a known good spark plug to prove there was still no spark (in some cases very very dim spark), and then ended up justifying the purchase of the $50 OEM ignition coil (without boot). The resistance also was way out of range on the old one, where as the new one had proper in-range resistance. Replaced it and the trimmer started right up.
Pull the spark plug boot also with no spark, and check connection integrity.
Un gros merci Donyboy, très instructif, on est chanceux d'avoir des gars comme toi sur youtube. As someone else said, you saved us hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the years. Thank you so much for your work.
merci beaucoup!
Great rehearsal, thank you
very good demonstration; thank you
Once again a really good video and a very good example of someone who knows how to get the message over,
Thank you and well done.
I have used this method many times, Great tip for people to know.
Great information and presented well.
