Captains Courageous Trailer - Directed by Victor Fleming and starring Freddie Bartholomew, Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas, Charley Grapewin. Harvey, the arrogant and spoiled son of an indulgent absentee-father, falls overboard from a transatlantic steamship and is rescued by a fishing vessel on the Grand Banks. Harvey fails to persuade them to take him ashore, nor convince the crew of his wealth. The captain offers him a low-paid job, until they return to port, as part of the crew that turns him into a mature, considerate young man.

One of the most moving films I have ever seen! Truly a timeless classic.

I watch this classic gem many times over and I cant stop crying every time.
One of the best movies ever, inspired ne to go to the piper at Mackinac Island in 1987 and ask Captain Dan Moreland to be a volunteer crew for the Great Lakes Voyage on the Ernestina-Morresey. I gave him a scrimshaw of the ship as I was a scrimshander at the time. I was accepted and got to live and work on the exact same ship like one ones featured in this film and experience a 14 knot run into Toronto. Unforgettable and both that ship and Captain Dan sail the seas to this day. They let me climb the rig and fo helmsman duty and now this movie means much more to me, as bringing back the actual experience. It took 16 crew to raise the mainsail.
I enjoyed this movie a lot. It was years after watching it that I realized Spencer Tracy played Manuel. He was the greatest actor of his generation.
I think every parent should watch this movie with their child. We need to talk to our children. It's a beautiful movie and I never get tired of watching this movie when it comes on TV.
Amen. It is so great, and about so much more than it was unappealngly described to me in some review in the late 60's, roughly as "the Protestant Work Ethic" meets the "Old Boys Network", and a kid gets hit by a man, and the movie thinks that's fine! I didnt want to endure a minute of that. Later, when a friend told me it was a great movie (likely because another friend told her to), I didn't want to see it. But I was such a Negative Nellie, and "Negative" was the "New Evil", and "Positive" was the "New Good". No room in that formulation to realize that one needs to be negative towards real evil, so it wasn't good enough. I finally saw it in 1978-79 or so, while I was continuing to be restored in my faith in Jesus, but dealing with extremely hard trials. By 1981-1983 or so, I was wishing it could unexpectedly appear on a school day afternoon, instead of the regular programming on MTV, and give a micro dose of what happened to Harvey to all the "Bevises and Buttheads" watching as they got home from school, to show them they were allowing themselves to be cheated out of everything that was meaningful and good, starting with the shock of those amazing opening credits. I knew the cinemaphiles would watch it, even if the B's & B's scorned it.
I have seen this movie many times and it has brought tears to my eyes at every viewing. I found myself reminded of it as the Gloucester-based movie "CODA" received so many Oscars recently. It may be time to see it again,
First movie to make me cry as a kid......never forgot.....powerful .
This is a MUST for all Boys ...a beautiful outstanding story..

Girls, too! It is about more than just men and boys, but it is really strong about that important relationship, isn't it? It's just that it's more than that. It's a really beautiful, deeply meaningful movie. People used to say it was the best movie ever made. Now hardly anyone knows about it.
If you get the chance to see the whole film, do so.
I grew up on the movie as a kid - imagine my indignation when I read the book when I was 12-13 and realized Manuel was supposed to be alive! I actually love both this film & the book equally - the movie has the great mentorship of Manuel and Harvey and this great rivalry-friendship between Manuel & Long Jack (acted by John Carradine one of my favorite actors). The book has the friendship and obvious future partnership (once they're adults and planned right at the end of the book) between Harvey & Dan (which I love and sacrificed to a large extent in the film), and one of my favorite characters which is of course Penn (& his friendship with Uncle Salters).
WHAT THE ? I avoided reading it all this time because I didn't want to read about Manuel's death !!!
@@biaise9052 Right? When I read it, I was getting to the part where he reunites with his dad. Then paused and was like "Wait Manuel doesn't die? Prepared-for trauma averted." It's a really good story (different obviously from the movie and not just because of Manuel) so I definitely recommend it.
I never cried so hard at a movie as I did at this one.

I didn't know this movie existed until I looked up the cast of what turned out to be the remake which starred Robert Urich in 1996. I cry each time I watch the remake but from this 1937 trailer I can tell that there are quite a few differences.
This should be a mandatory film in all grammar schools. Another good film would be "Boys Town"
My father showed me this movie when I was a kid. People didn't understand him well, but as you can see... he had great taste in films.

I remember reading some where that Spencer Tracy said Captains Courageous wasn't a film he particular like.
I grew up in the sixties watching Spencer Tracy, James Cagney, Edward G Robinson just to mention a few actors of the period I like
Captains Courageous is right up there with movies I re watch regularly, never read the book, but always well up towards the end

I think he said that his performance was one he didn't particularly like. It seems to me I read recently that he thought it was a great movie, yet there was much about his performance that must have been an embarrassment to him, including getting an Oscar for his worst performance, in his best movie. I can see it that way, but I prefer to silence my inner critic towards him, and just let him be Manuel Fidelo. It occurs to me that Manuel says a few things that _The Old Man and the Sea_ said later. it is entirely possible that Hemingway was deeply moved by it, too, and pondered expanding on this fisherman in his psyche the rest of hiis life.

Whenever it's on I try and catch it when it's on seen it 3 or 4 times it's the type of movie one remembers.
Told you Manuel that kid was bad luck ! ...
But at the end of the movie, Jack now respects Harvey so much, and he feels so deeply for him, he wouldn't dream of blaming Manuel's death on the "Jonah".

Yes, go to Amazon. It's part of a 4 movie set of Spencer Tracy. Quality got good reviews, haven't checked it yet, got it for a friend. That race scene is spectacular.
Every now and then, Amazon has it on sale. I waited patiently ( well.. more or less) for someone selling it for a reasonable price. Which finally happened, just be tenacious, there are dvds out there of it.
It's now available on Amazon Prime's streaming service, watched it last night & the quality is excellent, as good as any remastered classic I've seen. And it's not colorized! I bought it rather than renting it so I can re-watch it.

So, I watched this for the first time last night. Does anyone else think it was foolish for the Captain to race until the mast got busted? especially due to the fatal outcome of it? I was quite angry toward him, but nothing in the script that other characters were angry.
Wen Manuel is dying, and he apologizes to Captain Disko about losing the race, better luck next year, the look on Disko's face tells it all.
Great.movie, all landlubbers missed out.
