- After battling the rust, we thought we should probably try and get the engine running before building the box. Having been sat not moving for at least two years we knew we were in for a bit of fun.
This week, watch Lucy's dad battle against the old mechanics of the Bedford, and get the engine running in this how-to-guide on replacing a rocker cover gasket, rewiring the battery and testing the starter motor.
PLEASE let us know what you think in the comments! We'd love some input with this project if anyone has any cool ideas to share.
Thanks for watching our videos and supporting our channel. As ever, if you enjoy what you see please comment, like, subscribe and share.

This brings back some memories,as I drove CFs from starting work in 1978
Never been so exited to see an old van start !
ConnorQ Same here! It’s a good feeling 😃
7.49 the best sound ever . I've got a 1971 Bedford CF Bedouin that I love but haven't started her in 3 years.
after watching this video it has inspired me so when spring rolls along I'll be out there getting mine started. Thank you
We couldn't believe the lovely sound it had after being sat for so long! Just gotta sort out the oil leak issue and it'll be much better. I love the Bedouins, great looking vans. Good luck hope it goes smoothly, roll on Spring ☀️
Sorry missed the live stream nice to see you haven't had any nasty surprises and it's just age related stuff. Miss working on the older cars and vans, that's why I like my LDV CONVOY thier so basic mechanically it's like an older van.
Roger Faulkner This van is definitely easier to work on than our LDV, no electrics for a start, but LDVs are basic compared to modern vans. It’s all been a learning experience though for sure!
Really enjoyed this vid, from a time when vehicles had character, before they were all built in the same place by robots and badge engineered for any manufacturer. Can't wait for the next one!
Richard Davies couldn’t agree more! Having lots of fun learning with this van
Great video. Not too many vanlife videos show the work that's being done to the engine.
MudRFunR Cheers, we’ve had a little break over the holidays but will be uploading much more mechanical stuff in the new year. Thanks for watching
@@FromRustToRoadtrip I'll be looking for more. I subbed!
How exciting! Where would be be without Dad's help! (not very far in my case)
Haha Dads eh? Our LDV would most certainly not be on the road without him! We're taking this opportunity to learn as much as we can from him too :)
WOW WOW WOW. BROOOM BROOOOM. 👍👍👍👍🚐
Best wishes to you all. X
Thanks Darren! 😁
Bedford CF ,Commercial Freight .Had 3 of them in 1980s ,bought one for £50 in the pub one night and it ran for 12 months before giving up finally ! great to drive without the engine cover on too but tell your Dad to remove his bracelet and watch before working on an engine ,worse thing you can do trust me .
Lucys dad is a bit of a legend 👍 I loved the liberal use of the word ‘we’ as well, reminds me of my kids who are 8 and 10 😁
Haha that he is! We did actually help quite a bit with this but as we can't film and work at the same time we don't feature much! We will be doing a lot more of the work in future videos for sure :)
Lucy's Dad needs to remove his bracelets, especially when working on batteries
Never been an issue in his 50+ years of working on vehicles so far 🙃
brilliant, youve got a great dad there
Thankyou! He's pretty handy at just about anything 😄
Great to see the van start. I think your Dad must be an expert! Especially the fact that he knew about the rocker cover gasket clip!! Keep up the great videos.
We're so happy to have it started! He's pretty good, there's not much he doesn't know about engines!
being someone who actually know Lucy and her dad I can confirm he know alot of stuff haha
Have you a fanny?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Dad knows best 😉 well done for getting it going, looking forward to watching it grow into something beautiful 👍 chrysalis to a butterfly springs to mind, really going to enjoy watching this as your videos are so professional and you both are natural 👍wishing you all the very best with the rest of the build ❤️ Brett and Bec xx 🏴
Thanks so much! We've got big plans for this van, we hope it's going to be something totally unique! We feel like our presence on camera and our editing style is improving week by week, so what you've said means alot to us! 😁
@@FromRustToRoadtrip keep up the good work 😉 and It means a lot you take the time to always get back to us, thank you 👍👍👍
Forgot to say Merry Christmas all thanks for great videos all year and some unforgettable moments 👍 loved it ❤️ Brett + Bec xx
Loving your work, I look forward to going back and seeing previous episodes
Thank you very much! We’ve had a short delay to our work but should be back fairly soon :)
That will be a pretty great build when it is done guys, loads of character in a van like that and it had less rust than our 03 transit lol keep up the good work!
Van Life With Betty Boondocker Thank you! Wow that’s a reassuring thing to hear haha
Good video. it totally got me caught up in the moment.
Thankyou! So glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Nice one...I’m along for the ride...
Brilliant van bet you were well excited when it ran
rubber tramp!!! stokesy we were so chuffed! It sounds sweet too. Just a few more mechanical issues to go hopefully.
Brilliant video. I'm just about to start work on getting our Bedford CF facelift SV100 autosleeper back on the road in the coming weeks. Due to family circumstances, it's been sitting in a sheltered field for about 5 years, and stuff like this will no doubt prove invaluable!
Sounds like a fun project. Good luck and hope it goes smoothly. Thanks for watching!
Merry Christmas hope you had a good day, we hope 2019 will be a amazing year for yo both 😉👍❤️ Brett n Bec xxx
Great video
Thanks Mark
WORKED on many trick is to evostick the gasket to cover b4 fitting to engine otherwise leak as photo
Good old dad! Well done..
Fuel pipes to the tank were famous for kinking
Nice job , keep it up.
What's the best thing you remember about your childhood?
Is a mechanically controlled diesel engine or lpg conversion in the future plans?
Most probably yes, the 2,3 slant in this is notoriously awful for fuel consumption and we're not sure how well it will pull when fully laden. We'd love to keep it as original as we can however an engine swap is likely on the cards for next year.
Brilliant! 😎🤗
Love the videos,
Keep up the good work. Is your old van for sale ?
Cheers Louis, we're still living full-time in our LDV and will be after this van is completed too. The Bedford is going to be for hire. Although we have a feeling we're going to want to live in this one as it'll be a much nicer van than our LDV!
15mpg
The engine blows oil and the valves need to be adjust.I remember if I drive this van by the Opel dealer in germany.
Yeah we’ve got a long way to go until the mechanics are running smoothly on this. It’s the beauty of old vehicles I guess :)
What does that oil vent on the top of the engine connect ?
No idea, sorry! We never ended up using the engine on this van so this video is as far as we got mechanically
It's a Cam cover, this is an OHC engine not a OHV which has rockers
Can I borrow Lucy's dad?

9 mpg
Lucy I like you !
Hands down the worst van I have ever owned! Horrendous fuel and oil consumption. 45mph with the Luton body on!
dude needs to cut his hair. apart from that, im ok with the rest of the video
