- CDL vs. Non-CDL: Understanding GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. 🤓 If your total rig weight (tow vehicle and trailer) exceeds 26,001 lbs, a CDL is essential. We encourage you to determine what you will be looking to use your trailer for then researching federal and state regulations for CDL operation. 👍 #DiamondC #CDL

People asking you to de-rate are essentially asking you to say it can’t haul as much, then possibly loading it up to max anyways. Why put your business at risk for them? If an accident happens and someone’s hurt or worse you’ve potentially opened yourself up to the lawyers to be sued.
Nice trailers. We are not far from you guys in Telephone Texas.
Well now we need a video of Jacob pulling an fmax212 with an s10 through some weight scales in California and see what unfolds 😂
😂 lol
Even just around the yard would be good fun!
California, Nebraska, Arkansas all require a CDL if the trailer is 10,001 or more.
I've been inspected in those states.
My question is if I am NOT in buisness or hauling for pay, personal. If I am moving, and need to pass through the state? Second, can I haul within what my trailer truck combination GVWR if not for a buisness or hire, personal? Thanks.
In my 24 years of living in NE, ive got to say that i have broken this "law" sooooooooo many times 😅
Do y'all derate the gvwr if customer would want that?
Say I'd buy a 14.9k trailer, could Diamond C make the tag say 10k.
I'd rather have bigger components that aren't being stressed as much.
Glad y'all did a video on this subject. That's why I love Diamond C.
We de-rated our DC trailer from 14,900 to 14,400 lbs so it wouldn’t be over CDL with our 1 ton diesel truck. Talk to your dealer. FYI you have to de-rate when purchasing new.
I have a D7 PJ Dump Trailer that is a 14k trailer but I had PJ put a 10k tag on it.
Watch out for the Truck Police in Ohio then. They pull their portable scales out and you are over the trailer posted rating, you have problems....
You are able to derate a brand new trailer but do need to notify the dealer before taking the trailer home
👍👍
Our state also has the 17k rule for needing a D.O.T # with medical card. The kicker is ONLY if you're using the setup for commerce. All about the money....not about keeping others safe.
A financial investor I know looks for “money in motion.” The government is very good at finding this money as well.
Pennsylvania is this way. Anything over a 1/2 ton truck and 10K trailer needs a Medical Card.
@@noosh8316 Yes indeed. I'm from PA also
Some people don't understand that. Much like they don't cover balancing a check book in school, they don't go over that in drivers ed. Fair chance that if the truck doesn't look over loaded and the load is secure the fuzz wouldn't do/say anything unless their computers lit up based off the license plate registration. Flip side, I'd rather they get an 18k rated trailer with a Tonka rock truck on it vs having an open floor car trailer with a real rock truck on it.
Add to what you said, some states require a CDL if you are commercial hauler (Freight, Loader, Pizza). You haul for $$$ you need a CDL.
If you need a CDL for pizza....tell me which state that is cuz thats one cheap ass CDL
Not only cdl, it's much more a ifta sticker for fuel tax , dot number, log book , and hot shot driver is what the dot loves to stop and fine or put out of service, the correct way to secure your load , not being over weight by checking your tire load rating , its always the little thing you don't know that gets you in trouble myself 35 years in the trucking business, im about done with it 😊
All you have to do is D rate The trailer , Then register it To 0 , And the truck to 26000 pounds , Then you be ok. Then you will be combination Weight , DOT Won't bother you.
That makes sense to a certain degree. Trailer manufactures do the working man an injustice when they rate trailers the way they do. Example a 17.5k trailer has 8k axles therefore if you put above 16k on that trailer it has exceeded the trailers weakest point the axles however when you hook that to your truck your truck can carry the 1.5k of tongue weight to make it a 17.5 trailer. So if a truck has a 9900 and you hook a trailer with two 8k axles you on theory would be at 26k which keeps you under CDL and allows you to buy the heavy dustiest trailer for your needs.

@dougmarkley1476 if trailer manufacturer is rating trailer higher thrn combined axle ratings walk away. That dealer is doing shady and illegal stuff. They can rate lower the axles capacity but not higher (unless it's a camper)
In California any trailer over 10000 lb or 20 foot long even if you tow with a half ton.i bought a diamond 💎 c trailer hdt it was 14900 I had the trailer rated at 9999.
It can be over 20 feet
@jakeglabe6566 not in California I went to dmv any trailer rated over 10000 lb or 20 foot long no matter what you tow with you need a cdl
My question is if I am NOT in buisness or hauling for pay, personal. If I am moving, and need to pass through the state? Second, can I haul within what my trailer truck combination GVWR if not for a buisness or hire, personal? Thanks.
Are we sure it is a CDL or a Class-A license that is required? DPS explained to me that in Texas there is both a "Class-A" license and a "Class-A CDL" license. The first type (Class-A) allows over 26,000 combined weight for personal towing, but if one is paid for the work, then a "Class-A CDL" is required. Can someone confirm this?
Sweet, now give ME AIR BRAKES!!!
Very good info. Unless you're a old fart towing a 38ft fithwheel camper with gvwr of 20k and a truck at 19k. Unfair, lol
I havent seen anyone talk about having a tow rig at 10k GVWR but they have a CDL. Can I pull a bigger trailer with a higher weight rating as long as it keeps my truck axels legal?
Reach out to us at feedback@diamondc.com so we can get a better understanding on this topic 😎
I have tried to get information about loads and DC refers me to a dealer when my question is about moving personal items across the country to my new home... subject may not be answerable since traveling through various states. Same holds true, do I need to stop at weigh stations?
NYS rules is 10k or over needs a nys dot numbers or US DOT NUMBER and any over 26001gvwr is CDL LICENSE.
If we are using it for personal use, not for profit, would we still need a cdl over 26k gvwr?
Rules and regulations are different from state-to-state. We recommend contacting DOT to know what your states regulations are.
De-rating a trailer still doesn’t really mean anything. If your State required anything over 10K to be CDL and you de-rate a 14K trailer down too 9999 lbs, it doesn’t mean you can now load 14K on the trailer (total weight.) You’d be limited to 9999 lbs even though the trailer isn’t at capacity.
California is the only state in the Country who requires CDL for trailers over 10K GVWR. If you don’t have a Cali license then your good.
@@noosh8316well I live in Maine and we require it
That is my question. How do rvs get away with not having a cdl? Is it because it is not commercial, or buisness? Does DOT care if you are not a buisness but moving personal stuff? I am not in buisness but want to move to anothe state, I have a f450 pickup and wanted to buy a gooseneck capable of 18,000 lbs. I wanted the insurance of peace of mind.
If it personal and not commercial in any way my understanding is you’re fine. If you want put a not for hire sticker on your truck to make it clear you’re not commercial.
Does Diamond C derate the GVWR of trailers?
We de-rated our DC trailer. Talk to your dealer.
We are able to derate a trailer before it being registered. Notify your dealer to submit the request.
CDL never heard of her 😉
They talk a good game but their trailers are trash they will blow you off when you talk about concerns until you're out of warranty and then tell you sorry you're out of luck I own Three diamond C trailers and I will never buy another one
What specifically about them?...Recently or for many years prior?
We aren’t gonna talk derating?
good thing nobody cares in rural areas.
