I was at the PF Animals Tour at Milwaukee County Stadium when I was 17 years old in 1977. We were around 3rd base and there were giant pig balloons floating around the stage. At one point a pig exploded and we could feel the heat and the concussion way back on 3rd base.

    Hey Larry
    Another outstanding reaction and analysis!
For me, the super rich are the pigs, with their nose in the trough but not getting their hands dirty. The dogs do the dirty work for them and they get discarded without a care once they have served their purpose. Just like unwanted pets, without a friend in the world and ultimately dragged down by the stone.
I think we can see where the sheep lie in this story snd I really look forward to seeing your reaction to it.
Musical genius aside- weren’t Floyd such an insightful band at an early age? Well educated and thoughtful, and blessed with musical prowess most of us can only dream about. A true supergroup.

To let you know Rodger Waters did not play most of the bass on this song. David Gilmour played a fretless Bass during this song and played bass guitar throughout the majority of this song!! So, when it all comes down to it, Waters modeled Dogs, Pigs and Sheep after George Orwell's Animal Farm. In Waters' interpretation, society is broken down into Pigs: the corporate overlords, Dogs - middle management, and Sheep - the everyday workers.
The backstory is that Pink Floyd developed both songs that became Dogs and Sheep (You Gotta Be Crazy and Raving And Drooling) on the last leg of their Dark Side Of The Moon tour. In the same tour they also premiered the working title Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The follow up album was supposed to consist of Shine On for one side, and You Gotta Be Crazy and Raving and Drooling on the other side. As Waters was the only one who had a desire to create the album after Dark Side (he was going through a nasty divorce so work was his escape), and the other three were off battling their own demons which mainly consisted of the angst of having to follow up Dark Side, Waters became the de-facto head of the project. He decided that the three songs did not follow a theme together, and really wanted Shine On in the next album, so he nixed the other two, which really angered Gilmour. Once Waters explained his position and the themes he wanted to surround Shine On with (absence, criticism of the music industry - all which contributed to Syd Barrett's downfall) Mason and Wright agreed. So they wrote three songs to go with Shine On (Welcome To The Machine, Have a Cigar and Wish You Were Here and then Waters made the decision to split Shine On to bookend the album, which angered Gilmour once again. Again, a vote gave Waters the support he needed and now, each member has stated that Wish You Were Here is their favorite album.
So you can see that Waters did not become the domineering leader that he is now infamous for being at the later stages of Pink Floyd, he was basically handed that title by Mason and Wright, especially since, as we can see, his decisions were adept.
For Animals he took the two discarded songs and reworked them under the Animal Farm theme and wrote Pigs to round it out. For being such a heavy album all members state they remember it being a very fun recording.
All can be found in Nick Mason's excellent Pink Floyd 'biography', Inside Out.
    Sorry for being so long-winded...
One last suggestion, Nick Mason never gets enough credit for his drumming. I encourage you to watch Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii, where Mason really shines! (as do the others, as well). It's just cool to watch them all perform together. They were so good playing off each other.
    Thanks for the videos!

Thank you so much for sharing this detailed and fascinating insight into the creation of Pink Floyd's "Animals" album! It's always incredible to learn about the intricate dynamics and decisions that shaped such iconic music. The connection to George Orwell's Animal Farm adds an extra layer of depth to the album's themes. And you're absolutely right about Nick Mason's drumming - his contribution often deserves more recognition. Me being a drummer, (mostly of the prog-rock complicated era) should be giving more credit to the likes of Mason. I really like his playing. I appreciate your thoughtful comment and your recommendation to watch Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii. It's indeed a joy to see these musical legends perform together. The reference to Whitehouse is Mary Whitehouse who proclaimed herself to be the moral police of the time. If you listen to the lyrics again for the 3rd pig they will make perfect sense once you know this. The 2nd is Thatcher, again knowing that and knowing Thatcher the lyrics are genius. And the 1st is James Callaghan leader of the opposition during Thatcher who was supposed to represent the working class but had his snout in the trough like the best of the pigs. The entire album is pure genius

The Whitehouse reference was about Mary Whitehouse, an activist in Great Britain. You hear "Mary" said after "Whitehouse".

    • @SpaceOdditiesLive
      @SpaceOdditiesLive Před rokem +1

Just to amplify that, Mary was the self-appointed head of the National Viewers and Listeners association, a conservative, religious pressure group who took it upon themselves to attempt to censor the media if they saw or heard anything they didn't like. The BBC, for example, lived in fear of Mary and her cohorts, who even demanded that Tom and Jerry be taken off our screens because of its alleged violence. Needless to say, sex on TV got them particularly hot and bothered.
Mary was one of the pigs - those people who try and control what others can do and experience. And after almost 50 years, we can see the pigs are winning, with books being removed from libraries in the US, and a pressure campaign to teach children a sanitised version of American history. Trumpism is all about letting the pigs loose.

Great reaction! Pigs is probably the 'weakest' of the 3 big ones on this album - and it's still amazing - so that's saying something! (We'll discount Pigs On The Wing Part 1 & 2 - those are basically sound bites in comparison).
Someone may have already mentioned, but the reference to 'Whitehouse' was for Mary Whitehouse - a British teacher and right-wing conservative activist, who waged a bit of a censorship war & was notably anti-gay with her Christian beliefs (not that all things she did were harmful or repressive - she pushed for anti-child pornography legislation - and I can certainly abide by that). It was one of the rare times Waters mentioned someone by name!
Wright's haunting keyboard lines in this are awesome - as is Gilmour just going nuts at the end! There is some live recordings from 1977 where Dave just goes batsh!t at the end - I have a bootleg displaying this, and it's bonkers!

Whitehouse is not a well-known persona outside the UK. It was weird hearing that reference in the song, but many people in the comments have enlightened me. As for Rogers, I respect his song writing brilliance along with his founding and contribution to some of the most compelling music I've ever heard. However, today, after studying his path - firstly, him alienating Wright, basically anointing himself as King of PF, and sole writer of its music, while disregarding Gilmour and Mason's objections, then getting the rightful boot from PF, I find him quite narcissistic & divisive, exactly the qualities he supposedly railed against.
